"A compromise concealed weapons bill could be introduced as early as this week. The bill would do the following:
* Set up a statewide system in which county sheriffs would issue permits.
* Require an applicant to pass a background check and show proof of gun safety training.
* Allow sheriffs to deny a permit if they have documentable proof the applicant is a risk to themselves or others. Anyone denied a permit could appeal the sheriff's decision.
* Require individuals to apply for and receive a permit in the county where they live. |

"I have heard a number of opinions about the new color-coded threat rating imposed by Uber Kounsellor Ashcroft and the Ministry of Homeland Security. These opinions seem to fall into two general categories. About half the people think that it's another offensive indication that the government believes all of us to be little more than children, children who do not think and therefore need guidance and a firm discipline, which they intend to provide." |

"Chicago's revised anti-gang loitering ordinance survived its first legal challenge Tuesday, when a judge ruled that City Hall followed the legal 'road map' drawn by the U.S. Supreme Court."
"If such guidance is labeled a 'roadmap,' then the Chicago framers of the revised Gang Loitering Ordinance knew how to read the map," Associate Circuit Judge Mark J. Ballard wrote in a five-page opinion.
"Arguing on behalf of three Pilsen men arrested for flashing gang signs in a designated 'hot spot,' the public defender's office had argued that the new ordinance was even worse than the old one, which was tossed out by the nation's highest court." |

"The state senator who campaigned against the citizen initiative that mandated background checks at Colorado gun shows probably wishes he had been more successful."
"Sen. Jim Dyer, shopping at the Tanner Gun Show over the weekend, was told he could not buy a weapon because he failed a background check. Apparently, the Littleton Republican has an outstanding warrant in Denver for driving without insurance."
"Here's the problem: Dyer was issued the ticket only because he couldn't locate his insurance card after a car accident. He later showed police his proof of insurance, and the case was closed."
"Except it wasn't closed on a police computer database, which Dyer discovered in front of laughing gun show patrons." |

"From California to New Jersey, public schools are banning the children's game of 'cops and robbers' and threatening students with expulsion out of a fear that even imaginary weapons pose a threat."
"For example, at Lewis Elementary School in Fort Irwin, Calif., one father removed his 9-year-old son from class after the school principal threatened to expel the boy if he didn't stop playing cops and robbers on the playground."

"A primary provision in the bill is that it prohibits people and groups from running political ads in newspapers and broadcast media that refer to a particular candidate within 60 days of a general election and 30 days of a primary election."
As such, it is a clear violation of the Constitution's First Amendment, which says, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech. ..." |

"As Gabe Leonard drove home through Beverly Hills after midnight one evening, lights flashed as he went through an intersection. He knew instantly he'd been photographed by a traffic camera."
"Mr. Leonard tried to recall where his wheels were when the yellow light turned red. He thought he'd beaten the light. But 12 days later he received a summons including photos of his car, incriminatingly in mid-intersection."
The freelance artist fought the $271 fine in court and, surprisingly, won. "I decided to fight on principle," says Leonard. "[A red-light camera] presents itself as some sort of infallible process." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939 |
