When Commissioner Bill Bratton appeared before the City Council's public safety committee this afternoon for the NYPDS's annual preliminary budget hearing, he was asked about the rash of stabbing incidents in the city. The number of knife attacks is up by 20 percent so far this year according to Bloomberg News; the number of shooting incidents is down 12 percent, according to the latest NYPD crime statistics.

A retired Pennsylvania trooper who fatally shot two turnpike employees at a toll plaza, then was killed trying to unload money from a toll collection vehicle, had filed for bankruptcy last year after running up huge credit card debt.
Clarence Briggs, 54, killed toll collector Danny Crouse, 55, and Ronald Heist, 71, a former police officer working as security, at a rural toll plaza about 60 miles west of Harrisburg, police said.
Police said Briggs was shot in an exchange of gunfire with a state trooper after driving the toll-collection vehicle to a spot nearby where his own car was parked.

A man with a prior conviction for battery on a peace officer stabbed two San Diego firefighters last year at a trolley stop in a "brazen' attack, a prosecutor said Monday, but the defendant's attorney said his client acted in self-defense after a fire captain pushed him over a bench.

Second Amendment (gun + flag)"This is no moderate. This is no consensus candidate," GOA's Erich Pratt says of Garland. "He is way out of step with average Americans."

Why is it that cities with the most restrictive gun-control laws seem to now have the fastest-growing murder rates? And why, when those murder rates begin to skyrocket out of control, do city officials seem to believe that the only possible way to curtail the rampant violence is by instituting further restrictions that only affect law-abiding gun owners?

In 1974, a distraught teenager who�d been previously ejected from Wanaque Judge Joseph Crescente�s courtroom fired a gun from the street into the building, killing the 71-year-old judge and shocking the 50 people in the courtroom. State Sen. Gerry Cardinale (R-Cresskill) said he wants to make sure that never happens again. He said given today�s �emotionally charged� legal and political scenes, it�s time to arm judges and other public officials.

Students at Craver Middle School in Colorado City spent the past two days learning everything about safely handling guns -- where they've come from, why we have them, and how to shoot them. "We're teaching them about the firearms so they are familiar with them, they can be safe with them," program coordinator Jim Heath said.

Sgt. Jason Covey sits at a conference table in the Middlebury Police Department offices. Displayed out in front of him are three guns. Each one has a little tag attached by a string, looped around the trigger like a price tag, with information about how the department acquired the gun.
"This we've had since 2005," Covey explains, lifting a pistol from the table. "It was a firearm used in a violent crime in Middlebury."

One of Virginia�s most prominent Republican politicians is banking that gun owners in the state will pay his law firm hundreds of dollars a year to have an on-call attorney ready to defend them if they are charged with a crime or sued for shooting someone.

Ken Cuccinelli, a former Virginia attorney general, founded United Self Defense Law two years ago, following a failed gubernatorial run in an election in which gun rights played a pivotal role. �When you are forced to fight for your life, we think you should have someone ready to fight for you in court,� the firm says on its website.

Police Chief Bill McManus is expected to roll out a new initiative to combat gun violence in San Antonio. Details about the plan could come as early as Monday, just days after several shootings on the East Side on Friday night. Stockton police confiscated multiple guns and made an arrest in a shooting from earlier this year, officers said Monday. Police went to a home in the 2300 block of Fairway Glen Street about 7 p.m. Sunday to conduct a follow-up on several recent shootings identified through Operation Ceasefire.

Transportation Security Administration officers at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)say they prevented two local men from bringing semi-automatic handguns onto their flights March 18th in two unrelated incidents. In the first, a Sterling resident was caught with an unloaded .9 mm gun along with 24 bullets; two loaded magazines with 12 bullets in each.

While his competitors are zeroing in on Senator Toomey and the general election, Braddock Mayor John Fetterman wants to talk about issues, specifically gun control. Capt. Gator Deloach will speak with reporters about the investigation, which will be handed over to the State Attorney�s Office for further investigation, according to the Sheriff�s Office. The Escambia County Sheriff�s Office responded to the Oak Lodge Mobile Home Park in 7500 block of Lillian Highway for a reported home invasion in progress. The victim told dispatchers that two black males were trying to enter their residence and were armed with guns. The victim gave a detailed description of the pickup truck the suspects were driving. When deputies arrived on scene the suspects were trying to flee the area in the pickup truck that the victim described, according to the ECSO.

Self-discipline and dedication are the words coach Scott Fausnaugh uses to describe what made his young marksmen with the Amvets Post 2256 Diabolos Air Rifle Team so successful in such a short time. Founded just two-and-a-half years ago, the team is sending three athletes to the National Junior Olympics at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in April. Westfall junior Jared Minor, Circleville senior Zack Fausnaugh, and Zane Trace senior Nathanial Freeman all qualified for the competition in precision class. Coach Fausnaugh, father of Zack, explained the two classes of 17-caliber air rifle competition: precision and sporter.

Merrick Garland's judicial record over nearly two decades indicates he would side more often than not with the Supreme Court's liberal justices on a range of cases splitting the court along ideological lines. The real question, to be answered definitively only if Garland wins Senate confirmation, is how far to the left would the court shift if a new liberal majority were in place.
