A Mesquite police officer caught on surveillance video slipping a packet of drug money into his pocket has pleaded guilty to theft.
A federal judge in Dallas on Tuesday accepted the plea from 42-year-old former Mesquite police Sgt. John David McAllister.
McAllister was in charge of a narcotics unit and his duties included helping transport confiscated drugs and cash. The FBI in December received a tip about McAllister possibly stealing drug money and set up a March 1 undercover operation.
McAllister, who'd been with a Mesquite officer for 22 years, resigned after being arrested March 3.

Lithuanian customs and postal officials say they have found a fully functional machine gun dating from World War II, complete with ammunition, in a package at Vilnius International Airport. Officials said Tuesday that the German-made MG-42 machine gun was found after scanning a suspicious 20-kilogram (44-pound) package posted in Lithuania and bound for Germany. Customs spokeswoman Asta Mikeleviciute says it was the first time that customs authorities had ever uncovered such a parcel and an investigation has been launched. No evacuation of the capital's airport was ordered, but authorities were placed on alert.

In a defeat for fiscal and Second Amendment conservatives, the House and Senate this week approved a short-term continuing resolution (CR) to extend the operation of the government for three weeks until April 8.
The CR would continue to fund anti-gun ObamaCare, ATFs illegal multiple sales regulations, ATFs unlawful Project Gunrunner and a litany of other unconstitutional provisions. |

But it should be understood that the Second Amendment confers no positive right. The Bill of Rights is an additional limitation on federal power to infringe upon gun rights besides the fact that no authority is granted to the federal government in its limited, enumerated powers to infringe upon them in the first place. If the Second Amendment didnt exist, Americans would still have the natural right to keep and bear arms.
From a constitutional (and libertarian) perspective, the federal government has no authority to ban or regulate handguns, shotguns, sawed-off shotguns, rifles, assault rifles, extended-capacity magazines, high caliber guns and ammunition, automatic weapons, or bazookas. |

Carrying a gun out in the open could become a reality in Oklahoma.
State lawmakers have shot down several gun proposals but one Senate bill still alive has some surprising opponents.
SB 129, sponsored by Senator Steven Russell R-Oklahoma City, would give anyone 18 years of age or older the right to openly carry a gun without a license or training.
FOX23s Abbie Alford reports why the Oklahoma Rifle Association is saying no to the current proposal.
...
The Oklahoma Rifle Association wrote a letter to state representatives opposing the open carry measure because it violates a federal age requirement of 21 to purchase guns. |

A bill in the legislature has taken an unlikely path, and a senate committee is taking the latest look. The bill would make it illegal for employers to forbid employees from keeping guns locked in their vehicles while at work.
The bill got a do not pass recommendation from the House committee that first looked at the bill, but passed overwhelmingly on the floor.
Basically the bill sets up a battle over property rights. |

Both the Texas House and Senate now have bills to allow anyone with a concealed handgun license to carry their weapons inside campus buildings, even into classrooms. This comes just months after another shooting scare at UT, when another student brought an assault rifle to campus and eventually killed himself.
I can see the angle of self defense and having it for protection, Michelle Bowman said as she walked across the UT campus.
"If someone makes up their mind to come to the campus and shoot people, then obviously there's something wrong with them, said Aaron Freeman, also on the UT campus. Trying to shoot them back isn't going to help."

A national gun control advocacy group weighed in Tuesday on a federal lawsuit that challenges Maryland's handgun permit laws, saying that the changes sought would be "bad law and even worse policy."
In an amicus brief, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence urges the dismissal of a lawsuit brought last year by the Second Amendment Foundation on behalf of Hampstead resident Raymond Woollard, a Navy veteran who was denied a renewal of his handgun permit.
Brady Center President Paul Helmke said in a statement that Maryland has "wisely rejected the gun lobby's agenda of 'any gun, anywhere for anybody.' Now the gun pushers want the courts to gut Maryland's laws and let virtually anyone carry a hidden handgun in public." |

In response to the March 12 other voices column from Al Velasquez, law-abiding gun owners are not a problem.
States with shall issue carry permits are not a problem. Criminals are the problem, hence the quote, "guns don't kill people, people kill people." Only law enforcement is allowed to stop criminals and it fails at the personal level.
If it weren't for the control nuts we wouldn't need the NRA. Yes, there are gun abuses just as there are car abuses. This is not a perfect world and never will be. However, making it harder for honest folks to arm themselves cures nothing and prevents the God-given right of self defense. |

Yes, Casey could have done a 50s-style duck-and-cover. Hey, kid, don't you know you should just cower and curl up into a ball? And, for sure, violence is never the answer...except with the Nazis, Mussolini, and Napoleon; during the American Revolution, the Barbary Wars, and the Battle of Tours; and when stopping the criminals during the North Hollywood Shootout, University of Texas Tower Shooting, and incidents every single day in which someone, somewhere uses physical force to thwart a crime. It's never the answer -- except, sometimes, when you actually have to deal with reality. |

People who walk onto the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College grounds are greeted by a sign posted on the doors which states that weapons are prohibited on campus.
However, if proposed House Bill 750 is signed into law the sign will need to be removed or at least changed.

Back when my kids were young, I was required to pull a shift now and then in our parish nursery, supervising the tots at play while their parents attended Mass.
Given the venue, and the times, the toys in the nursery were aggressively anti-violent. Nothing remotely resembling a gun was allowed on the premises. Nonetheless, the boys always the boys found ways to shoot at each other. With interlocking building blocks shaped into an "L." With their hands (forefinger as barrel; thumb as hammer). Even with graham crackers chewed into vague gunlike shapes.
Pow! Pow! Pow!

This story came about from a recent experience I had purchasing a 20 gauge shotgun at Cabelas.
I'm not an expert in the purchasing of guns in Michigan. The intent behind this article is to give some insight in what it takes to purchase a gun.
Some people think purchasing a firearm is way too difficult, while others believe its way too easy. Well, theres one thing for certain; this is a long article, and that should say something.
Im not here to promote or condemn the gun laws in Michigan. Im merely here to go over the rules and regulations so that the general public is more informed. An informed reader can make decisions about firearms much better than one who bases opinions on assumptions and misinformation. |

Gun rights have been an issue in America since its origins. Two hundred years later, the American public still disagrees on the Second Amendment's right to bear arms and its implications.
Texas State Legislature recently proposed legislation that would allow people with concealed handgun licenses (CHLs) to carry guns onto college campuses. However, guns cannot be carried inside buildings.
The new law mandates public universities to comply, but allows for private universities to decide whether to uphold the law or not.
"I'm glad SMU is a private institution and is therefore not bound to this law," sophomore Katrina Leshan said. |

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, has issued the following statement concerning legislation to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System:
When it comes to supporting commonsense measures that will help keep firearms out of the hands of those prohibited by law from possessing them, Americas firearms industry takes a backseat to no one. For example, members of the firearms industry have long-supported an instant background check for retail firearm purchases this support predates the introduction of the Brady bill. |

The bill made obtaining a permit in order to carry a concealed weapon optional.
Under current law, county sheriffs are authorized to grant concealed weapon permits at a price of $152.50 to applicants who have taken gun-safety training courses. |

The knee-jerk reaction of some people to stop crime with guns is to ban guns. However, the reality is that gun bans simply stop law-abiding people from owning them.
A criminal out to do a robbery with a gun isn't going to be deterred by a no-gun sign on the door. Gun bans leave the law-abiding citizen vulnerable. Criminals know this.
While law-enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, it's impossible to protect all 18 million Floridians at all times. |

Several lawmakers have called for a thorough investigation of Project Gunrunner, a sting operation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) that may have led to an American agent's death.
According to CBS News, the goal of Project Gunrunner was to track down leaders of Mexican drug cartels by allowing illegal gun trafficking across the border. Officials hoped that by following the sale of military weapons, they would identify some of the high-level members of these criminal organizations. |
