Normangee Police Chief Charles Herford has been arrested following a standoff in his home where shots were fired.

Herford was taken into custody and booked into the Leon County Jail on deadly conduct and evading in a motor vehicle charges.

According to DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan, just before 2:00 a.m. the Madison County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from Herford's wife crying on the phone. However, during the initial conversation officials lost contact.

As sheriff's deputies responded to the scene, they noticed Herford's police unit driving through town and attempted to stop him. Trooper Morgan says Herford eluded law enforcement, but officers continued to search for him.

We had flown into duck country early in the afternoon with plenty of time to get camp in shape before the evening hunt. Once all was in order, we sat out front of the cabin in camp chairs, two Labrador retrievers laying between us, waiting a bit before we headed out to a favorite pond for the evening flight.

Ammunition manufacturers have been working overtime developing non-toxic options for hunters; after all, demand drives innovation. Our current run-of-the-mill steel shot loads are as effective in reasonable ranges as their lead predecessors except for those who choose to shoot small gauges like the 28 and .410.

It is imperative that you contact Speaker Kurt Daudt, Majority Leader Joyce Peppin, and Committee Chairman Tony Cornish to voice support for the inclusion of both HF 188 and HF 238 in HF 896! Tell these legislators that law-abiding gun owners across Minnesota are eager to see these important self-defense bills move forward in the House of Representatives.

Earlier this month, two critical pro-Second Amendment bills were heard in the Minnesota House of Representatives Public Safety and Security Policy & Finance Committee:

HF188, authored by Rep. Jim Nash, would make permits to carry optional throughout Minnesota. This concept is known as Constitutional Carry and fully recognizes that a law-abiding citizen should not have to beg government permission to carry a firearm. Permits would remain available for individual wishing to carry in other states that recognize the Minnesota Permit to Carry.

Today, the British people are coming to grips with yesterdays lone wolf terror attack in London. A single assailant plowed his vehicle through pedestrian bridge traffic, injuring 29 people and killing three before crashing into a fence outside Parliament. He then exited his vehicle with a large knife in his hand and was confronted by a veteran police officer with 15 years of experience.

Arkansas gun owners celebrated today as Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed House Bill 1249 into law. Providing more protection for gun owners, HB 1249 creates an enhanced carry permit system that allows licensees to carry firearms in most gun-free zones.

Only criminals can find safety in gun-free zones, said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRAs Institute for Legislative Action. By allowing enhanced permit holders to carry in more places, Gov. Hutchinson has made Arkansas a safer place to live.

Utah Shooting Sports Council chairman Clark Aposhian delivered a letter to the governor's office expressing opposition to HB155, saying it would have unintended consequences to Second Amendment rights and self-defense.

If the bill becomes law, it would be illegal to carry a dangerous weapon with a blood-alcohol content of .05 percent or greater, he said. It would unfairly treat people who carry weapons with or without a state-issued permit, he said.

"They could be in their own home. There are no exceptions," Aposhian said.

This week the Florida Senate passed Senate Bill 128, Self-defense Immunity. This legislation protects the right of self-defense for all Floridians by correcting a misinterpretation of the "Stand Your Ground" law in the 2015 Bretherick vs. State Florida Supreme Court decision.

Senate Bill 128 clarifies that the government, not the accused, has the burden of proof in a "Stand Your Ground" immunity hearing. In a 5-2 decision, the Florida Supreme Court ruled otherwise.

The officer took a load of birdshot to the face from about 50 feetroughly 17 yardsand it didnt even break his skin, much less take him out of the fight. He instead engaged the suspect, firing two shots, before the suspect dropped his shotgun, feigned surrender, and ran off.

Gun control legislation should be reduced within the United States, because the Second Amendment grants the right to bear arms, self-defense is a justifiable reason to own a firearm, and gun control does not deter criminals.

In 2010, Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of the Second Amendment. Justice Samuel Alito wrote, ... the right to self-defense protected by the Second Amendment is fundamental to the American conception of ordered liberty.

Palm Beach County's State Attorney used strong words this week, opposing proposed changes to the state's Stand Your Ground law.

A bill in Tallahassee would shift the burden of proof in these cases to prosecutors. While similar legislation failed last year, the proposal passed the State Senate last week, and appears headed for approval in the House.

The case of Rijkard Jean-Baptiste is a local example of how the law currently plays out.

The floor vote in the state Senate on Tim Nevilles constitutional carry bill on Tuesday went as expected. His Senate Bill 116 passed with full Republican support, but Democrats took turns voicing opposition.

The immediate future of the bill is all but carved in stone. It will pass in the Republican-controlled Senate and fail in the Democratic-controlled House, the same fate as the constitutional carry bill Neville ran last year.

The basic principle is that, if you are legally eligible to possess a firearm, you should be able to carry that weapon concealed for self defense without begging the government for permission, Neville told his colleagues as an introduction to debate, making plain what he thinks of gun laws in general.

A fatal shooting that occurred when several men fought over a debt in Ridgeville has been ruled a justifiable homicide.

A man who shot and killed Ishmel Taquan Rivers, 23, Sunday was acting in self-defense, authorities determined.

Berkeley County sheriff's deputies said Rivers went to a home at 225 Garden Court, off S.C. Highway 27, to collect a debt from resident Diamonte Evans, 20. An argument ensued.

A gorgeous custom knife, the collaboration of some of the crafts most acclaimed bladesmiths and engravers, will be auctioned off during the NRAs 146th Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Atlanta, Ga., April 27-30, with all proceeds benefiting the Associations Institute For Legislative Action (ILA). The unique Bowie knife, dubbed Freedoms Steel VI Victorys Edge, was conceived of, and sponsored by, Knife Rights, a knife advocacy organization similar in purpose to NRA. As the name suggests, this is the sixth consecutive year that Knife Rights has donated a Freedoms Steel knife to NRA for the sake of fundraising, and these contributions have generated more than $120,000 for NRA-ILA during that time.

The debate over guns on college campuses continued Wednesday on social media and in the Log Cabin newsroom, after HB1249 was signed into law by Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

The law will go into effect Sept. 1 and will include a variety of public places, the least of all college campuses, that for many of us, have represented relatively safe spaces for many years.

The town councilors vowed their support Monday night for a resolution to ban all firearms on school grounds, including gun owners with concealed-carry permits, excluding law enforcement.

The resolution, which was presented by Jamestowner Bob Rodgers, asks the town to support two identical measures in the state legislature, House bill 5345 and Senate bill 187. Rodgers, a member of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence, said there is a loophole in state law that allows civilians to take their weapons onto school grounds. The proposed legislation eliminates the section that exempts licenses to carry concealed pistols and revolvers.

Yesterday, March 21, the Senate passed anti-gun Senate Bill 115 with a 12-9 vote. SB 115 was sent to the Assembly for further consideration. Sponsored by state Senator Moises Denis (D-2), SB 115 would expand the list of places firearms are prohibited from being carried and kept to include public library property. In addition to banning firearms within the library, this prohibition would be extended to include the parking lot as well. This would encompass the onsite book drop stations commonly used for returning library materials.

Discussion of so-called gun-free zones doesnt make it onto the news much these days, so the truth can be hard to find. The reason why is simple: After high-profile shootings, the mainstream media tend to ignore the facts and follow their gun-ban agenda into emotional discussions of gun bans, magazine bans and background checks.

Researcher John Lott, author of the new book, The War on Guns, and head of the Crime Prevention Research Center, has done more research on the relationship between mass public shootings and gun-free zones than anyone else in the country. We recently posed some questions to Lott in order to gain a better understanding of the issue.

Guns should be a last resort in self-defense and should never be a go-to when other peoples lives are at stake.

Students who use concealed carry must bear the weight if they fail to help themselves or others in self-defense.

As students, we arent trained to assess the situation when our lives are on the line, but law enforcement is.

Following reports of a knife and vehicle attack in London, the National Rifle Associations news show used the incident to promote how important our gun rights are here in America," suggesting guns could help Americans combat such an attack. But the show's commentary ignored the reality that the United States, which has more permissive gun laws than the United Kingdom, also has a much higher homicide rate, and it is largely driven by gun violence.
