"Democrats thought they would win confirmation for more of President Obamas nominees by waiving the 60-vote filibuster hurdle for executive branch appointments, but they didnt factor in nervous red-state senators afraid of taking tough votes that could sink their reelection in November."
"The latest apparent casualty is Vivek Murthy, a 30-something British-born American doctor, whose parents are from India, and whose Ivy League credentials and activism on public-health issues includes co-founding Doctors for America, which launched in 2008 as Doctors for Obama." ... |

"The News and Sentinel printed a letter ... titled, 'Protect the 2nd Amendment.' As you might expect, that letter writer was a gun owner. Unfortunately, that writer is typical of many present-day gun owners. His letter repeated all of the usual bogus talking points offered by the NRA. Things like: 'the Second Amendment is under attack,' 'Wake up America,' 'universal gun registration is coming,' 'the United Nations is going to take our guns,' 'Obama is going to take our guns,' 'well, someone is going to take our guns,' etc. His letter mentioned just about every silly, baseless, unfounded conspiracy theory currently being floated by the NRA."

"A nuclear weapon and a gun may be far apart on the arms spectrum, but theyre more alike than not. Theyre both designed to kill by setting off detonations one massive, the other miniaturized. Both depend, also to different degrees, on deterrence for their effectiveness. Whats more, the imperative to 'go forth and propagate' seems to inform both nuclear proliferation and the profusion of guns. But nuclear disarmament and gun control are difficult to enact in the United States because nuclear-weapons advocates and pro-gun campaigners twist the law, in the form of treaties and the Constitution, to their own ends." ... |

"Idahos legislators and governor should but most probably will not pay attention to a new batch of statistics about gun safety in Washington."
"As accidental gun injuries rise, the most common age of those who unintentionally hurt or kill themselves or others is 22."
"You know. Upperclassmen."
"Idahos legislators and governor will certainly not give this a thought, having already ignored all the good reasons to keep guns off crowded, chaotic and youth-filled campuses, and having already ignored every college president and the states police chiefs ... in favor of a stubborn Dirty Harry fantasy. They are in the grip of a passion, a faith, and the dictates of this passion involve overlooking or denying certain facts." ... |

"Its Friday night in the dorms at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Its 40 below outside, and the atmosphere inside is considerably warmer. Students are letting loose with a couple of beers."
"Its not a place for a gun to be."
"But thats one of the many places that Senate Bill 176 would allow a gun to be on University of Alaska campuses if approved in its original form. The bill, by Republican Sen. John Coghill, of North Pole, would overturn many University of Alaska restrictions on the possession of firearms on campus. People would be allowed to have them in dorms, classrooms, offices and numerous other places." ... |

"On March 14th Breitbart News reported on how Lisa Atkins pulled a handgun on a burglar in her home and pinned him down until police arrived 23 minutes later."
"The burglar, Joseph Baker, broke through two doors to get inside Atkins's Junction City, Oregon, home ..."
"Breitbart News recently talked to Atkins about that morning, asking about her experience with firearms and how it came about that she was ready to defend her life and property when the burglar appeared."
"Atkins told us she is originally from the UK, so she did not grow up around guns ... Then she moved to the United States in 2005 and realized a gun 'is an inanimate object, relying on its operator as to whether it is put to good or bad use.'" ... |

"Second Amendment rights of law-abiding military veterans continue to be stripped away without due process."
"A 1998 agreement between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the FBI was one of the first jabs at veterans Second Amendment rights. The agreement was made to send the names of veterans into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, triggering a virtual lifetime ban from owning firearms of those who are labeled as 'mentally incompetent,' meaning they need or desire the assistance of a fiduciary to help them manage, often complicated, financial affairs." ... |

"A federal appeals court is giving a Hawaii man another chance to argue that he should be allowed to carry a gun in public a privilege rarely given to people in the state."

"Governor Christies colorful and caustic barbs at his town-hall-style events often generate headlines and send Twitter into overdrive."
"But it was Christies cautious comments at the end of a recent event in Mount Laurel that caught the attention of gun-control advocates, who have rallied around legislation that would lower the capacity of ammunition magazines to 10 rounds from 15."
"'It is a very emotional issue on both sides,' said Christie, who is almost certain to have a bill on his desk this spring to sign or veto. 'Gun control and the Second Amendment are enormously emotional, combustible issues. My job as governor is to be the adult in the room.'" ... |

"FROM the way police entered the househelmeted and masked, guns drawn and shields in front, knocking down the door with a battering ram and rushing insideyou might think they were raiding a den of armed criminals. In fact they were looking for $1,000-worth of clothes and electronics allegedly bought with a stolen credit card.
