CBS-11 has learned two state troopers involved in a controversial roadside cavity search of two North Texas women have been indicted on criminal charges by a Dallas County Grand Jury.
CBS-11 has learned that one of the troopers, Kelley Helleson, who left the courthouse after testifying Friday, is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of official oppression.
She was seen on dashcam video searching the body cavities front and back of the two women along an exit ramp of the Bush Turnpike in Irving last summer.
The Texas Department of Public Safety fired Helleson.

A $12 million television ad campaign paid for by Mayors Against Illegal Guns hopes to push gun control efforts including comprehensive background checks.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the group's co-chair, announced the ad buy Saturday. The New York Times reported Bloomberg is financing the campaign.

One of the ads portrays a middle-aged man sitting on the back of a pick-up truck and holding a rifle.

"I've owned a gun all my life and I'll fight for my right to keep it," the man says. "Background checks have nothing to do with taking guns away from anyone," he adds.

"Police would not detail how many shots were fired during the incident, but two firearms were recovered from the home. Scott had permits for both weapons."

Submitter's note: This wasn't gun related until the reporter decided to engage in the CLASSIC and COMMON media behavior of speaking as if firearms require permits so as to indoctrinate the public into believing that permits/licenses are required. How many non gun owners or first time gun owners have YOU spoken with who ask you how you get a permit for your gun? I have met MANY over the years. "News" stories like this one is WHY. Nicely tell [email protected] to STOP MAKING THINGS UP ABOUT GUN LAWS! (BTW I'm SURRRRE it was an accident)

A new $12 million television ad campaign from Mayors Against Illegal Guns will push senators in key states to back gun control efforts, including comprehensive background checks.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the ad buy Saturday - just days after Senate Democrats touted stronger background checks while acknowledging insufficient support to restore a ban on assault-style weapons to federal gun control legislation.

Gun deaths shaped by race in America

Gun deaths are shaped by race in America. Whites are far more likely to shoot themselves, and African Americans are far more likely to be shot by someone else.
The statistical difference is dramatic, according to a Washington Post analysis of data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A white person is five times as likely to commit suicide with a gun than to be shot with a gun; for each African American who uses a gun to commit suicide, five are killed by other people with guns.
Where a person lives matters, too. Gun deaths in urban areas are much more likely to be homicides, while suicide is far and away the dominant form of gun death in rural areas.

Senator Lee to Offer Amendment Tonight to Ban Most Gun Control in the Senate

We realize its short notice, but we wanted to alert you that, later tonight, Senator Mike Lee of Utah intends to offer an amendment to the budget resolution that would prohibit any gun control legislation which does not have a 2/3 vote in the Senate.

We know, we know. We would prefer to prohibit any and all gun control, even if it had 100 votes.

But if the Lee amendment is passed, the practical effect will be that gun control can never again pass the Senate.

ACTION: Contact your Senators. Ask them to vote for the Lee amendment which would require a 2/3 vote for the Senate to impose any gun control.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has emerged as one of the most forceful national backers of stricter gun laws, and this weekend launched a $12 million television ad campaign meant to pressure wavering senators to support the new legislation when they return from their holiday break.

"He can't spend enough of of his $27 billion to impose his will on the American people," said Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's CEO and executive vice president, of Bloomberg's new advertising effort. "He can't buy America."

he National Rifle Association (NRA) on Saturday thanked Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) for introducing an amendment during the Senates budget vote-a-rama to prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The full Senate passed Inhofes amendment early Saturday morning on a 53-46 vote.

In a statement, Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRAs Institute for Legislative Action, said the fight to oppose any United Nations effort to undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding American gun owners has grown more intense.

The U.N. Arms Trade Treaty would regulate international arms sales. Negotiations end on March 28.

When the president of Ohio's state school board posted her opposition to gun control, she used a powerful symbol to make her point: a picture of Adolf Hitler. When a well-known conservative commentator decried efforts to restrict guns, he argued that if only Jews in Poland had been better armed, many more would have survived the Holocaust.
In the months since the Newtown, Conn., school massacre, some gun rights supporters have repeatedly compared U.S. gun control efforts to Nazi restrictions on firearms, arguing that limiting weapons ownership could leave Americans defenseless against homegrown tyrants.

Bloomberg detailed his plan during a Sunday morning appearance on Meet the Press. He said that the Senate was ignoring the will of the people by refusing to pass an assault weapons ban, and that there would be a political price to pay for inaction on guns.

I dont think we should give up on the assault weapons ban. But clearly it is a more difficult issue for a lot of people, Bloomberg said. I dont know that that reflects the NRAs power. It may be just that people have different views about assault weapons than they do about background checks.

Some people should not be trusted with access to firearms. On that point almost everyone agrees, the only debate being where to draw the line. But no one thinks that if the Unabomber had his sentence commuted, the Second Amendment would entitle him to acquire an arsenal.

Current federal law prohibits gun ownership by felons, those who have been committed to mental institutions, minors, drug users and illegal immigrants. Someone in an ineligible category who goes to a gun store will be flagged in an instant background check and turned away.

NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre hit back forcefully against Michael Bloombergs push for further regulation of food, drink . . . and guns. Bloomberg, said LaPierre, is in for a rude awakening because He cant spend enough of his $27 billion to try to impose his will on the American public. They dont want him in their restaurants, they dont want him in their homes, they dont want him telling them what food to eat, he continued, they sure dont want him telling them what self-defense firearms to own, and he cant buy America.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and National Rifle Associate Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre claim their opposing views on guns have the support of the overwhelming number of Americans. They are looking at the next two weeks as critical to the debate, when lawmakers head home to hear from constituents ahead of next month's anticipated Senate vote on gun control.

That is not the end of the story. Recent Supreme Court rulings have sanctified the Second Amendment into holy writ, but are we really still in an era where after more than two centuries after its ratification, we still need to worry about potential usurpers as then feared? The death knell for the monarchists sounded loudly and permanently during the Madison presidency. We now have the power of the vote rather than of the rifle to express our populist wishes.

"Before 1965, it would have occurred to precisely nobody that the Second Amendment guaranteed the right to organize private armies independent of the state."

The only way Frum could write that sentence is to have ignored the evidence in the piece of mine from which he was quoting or, more likely, to have failed to read it. If he had read it, he would have encountered the sentiment of Justice Joseph Story who lived well before 1965 and who was not precisely nobody which says the thing Frum says nobody said:

Baldwin Public Library isn't backing down in its attempt to lobby Michigan lawmakers to ban guns in Michigan's public libraries.

Last week, the Library Board made plans to aggressively court lawmakers in the State House and Senate in an attempt to have libraries included on the list of public places where firearms are not allowed.

"We can't let the issue die," Library Board Member James Suhay said at Monday's board meeting. "We have to keep pushing."

Since then, 1 Million Moms Against Gun Control has grown its weekly audience to nearly half a million people--all in the span of roughly one month's time. The movement has gained such substantial traction that in order to best manage the desire for involvement of thousands of people across the country, they found it necessary to develop state chapters. These individual state chapters will aid the organization in better serving Americans and protecting their rights at a local level, while making it easier and more practical for volunteers to get involved and see the difference they are making.

Tennesees outspoken African American female Senate candidate in 2014 spoke to Guns & Patriots about gun rights, racism, and the Bill of Rights.

Gun control historically begins with blacks who were forbidden from owning guns, said Brenda S. Lenard, a 2013 political science PhD candidate from the University of Tennessee and a resident of Kingston.

It was very easy for slave owners to keep and control blacks with gun control, she said.

The same thing is happening today, she said. It is a slow process of gun confiscation.

The owner of a gun store operated out of a home on Thorndike Road said the recent zoning board hearing to determine if the business is appropriate for a residential neighborhood should never have been held.

Robin Stevens said she was "shocked at what was allowed to be heard" at the March 5 hearing on the business she owns with her husband, Michael Stevens, at 161 Thorndike Road.

"This hearing was to be a hearing on zoning of the business Classic Armorer," Stevens wrote in a letter to the editor published in The Goffstown News on March 21. "This should not have been heard since the statute of limitations on this was 30 days after we opened, which was opened four-and-a-half years ago."

My own view is that some on the right were making far too big a deal of this treaty. It's a fanciful idea that the UN could negotiate any treaty that threatened confiscation of the guns of US citizens without congressional approval, as some on the right claimed.

Nevertheless, the treaty is a shot across the bow of arms dealers -- many of them US corporations.

We must pass the most important proposal, that almost all gun sales should be cleared through a federal computer base that lists felons, mentally ill individuals and others who should not have access to weapons. Licensed dealers already check 60 percent of such sales but widely popular gun shows do not. Biden said that passage of just this bill would be gigantic.

To make this database useful, every state should be required to supply needed mental health and other information, as Delaware already does. States that do not should have their federal law enforcement funds cut. The database also needs to be accessed more readily so there arent long waiting times.

CO: Hickenlooper calls Colorado assault weapons ban a "hard sell"

Gov. John Hickenlooper, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, called a ban on assault weapons "a tough sell."

Colorado last week adopted three gun-control bills limiting ammunition magazines to 15 rounds, requiring universal background checks and charging gun owners for the cost of the checks.

A bill banning assault weapons, however, did not clear the legislature.

"I think the feeling right now around assault weapons, at least in Colorado, is that they're so hard to define what an assault weapon is," Hickenlooper said.

Ever since the massacres in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., this idea has been repeated like some surreal requiem: The reason that mass gun violence keeps happening is because the United States is full of places that ban guns.

...

With its overtones of fear and heroism, the argument makes for slick sound bites. But here's the problem: Both its underlying assumptions are contradicted by data. Not only is there zero evidence to support them, our examination at Mother Jones of America's mass shootings indicates they are just plain wrong.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The provision in the Constitution granting the right to all persons to bear arms is a limitation upon the power of the Legislature to enact any law to the contrary. The exercise of a right guaranteed by the Constitution cannot be made subject to the will of the sheriff. [People vs. Zerillo, 219 Mich. 635, 189 N.W. 927, at 928 (1922)]
