Schneiderman and John Sampson, law enforcement representatives and community leaders, at the corner Huston and McDougal Street in Manhattan.

I sometimes watch a program on ER trauma on the Discovery Health Channel. They covered a common situation of a woman who was brutally beaten and tortured by her ex-boyfriend. Police arrived before he killed her, but not before significant physical and emotional damage had occurred.

She had a restraining order against the man. She had expressed concerns for her safety to police, who could not do anything about her exs strange behavior. Yet she knew she was in danger.

DC: Breaking News: Senator Jim Webb Staffer Arrested for Carrying Webb's Gun, Webb Carries Gun With Him All The Time

Virginia Senator Webb carries the gun on his waist all the time. A senate staffer informs me that police arrested a Webb staffer for gun possession. He was carrying a bag with the gun for the Senator. Quote: "The [Webb's] staffer had the gun by himself...Webb was in car!!"

I have written op-eds on this before regarding the special rules governing Senators and Congressmen. Regular people or even staffers aren't allowed to carry a gun, but politicians are. Reminds me of Mayor Daily in Chicago, who has armed body guards but won't let other in the city legally own handguns.

UPDATE: The senator staffer was arrested by Capitol Hill police while he tried to take the gun through security at a Senate Office Building.

"...Dear Editor,

"To put it mildly, Matthew Dennis obviously doesn't know what he is writing about. There is substantial proof of individual right. Following is just some brief crucial facts..."

"First, The Right to bear arms was a preexistent natural right. Here is as it appeared prior to the Constitution..."

"...And, here is the new and improved right following ratification of the Constitution/Bill of Rights..."

"The "inalienable right" has been slaughtered, or "infringed" if you will. By usurping Congresses, as well as by the courts. You might want to consider this. When they get done totally slaughtering the Second Amendment. That there will be nothing to prevent them from slaughtering all of the rest...."

There are always at least two sides to every important safety issue: seat belts, helmet laws, gun safety and even sexual predators. What is fair and what is not? Where do freedoms infringe on safety? Meanwhile, children lose their lives, and parents, families and friends experience the agony of senseless loss. Gun-safety awareness can be mistaken as an anti-gun issue. Gun safety is completely consistent with the Second Amendment, but that fear of loss starts the debate again and leads to no solution to diminish the unintentional shootings, gun violence and suicides among our young.

Pacifists and centre:left parties want voters to have the final say on breaking with a long:standing Swiss tradition of storing personal army rifles and pistols at home. They said they would launch a people's initiative to ban such weapons in households. The announcement came a day after parliament refused to take action over the issue.

Supporters of the ban are expected to launch a bid to collect the necessary signatures for the vote within the next few months.

The House of Representatives on Thursday threw out a proposal by the Social Democrats and the Greens to tighten the gun law, including having a central arms register.

Since not all rifle cartridges are made equal, Indiana deer hunters might actually have some new options next firearms season. A pistol cartridge rifle (PCR), not to be confused with a high-powered cousin like a 30.06, might actually become legal means for taking Indiana deer next season. The PCR proposal is scheduled for an Indiana Department of Natural Resources hearing on Monday at 6 p.m., Evansville time, at the Garrison Conference Center at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis. Public comments can be submitted in person at the public meeting, by written letter or by e-mail through March 31.

I want to thank Michelle Malkin for her column supporting the Second Amendment, as I was raised to believe that the Constitution is second only to the Bible ("Media Witch Hunt," PostOpinion, March 21). This country was formed by men and women who understood the true essense of freedom. They sacrificed their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for our own, and now we have Mayor Bloomberg destroying those very rights.

The National Rifle Association has apparently lost state Sen. John Douglas (R-Social Circle) in its effort to drum up support for S.B. 43, the bill to permit employees to keep guns in cars parked on corporate parking lots. Over the weekend, the NRA sent out a crush of e-mails to members, accusing many big corporations of curtailing Second Amendment rights. Douglas is important as a bellwether. Hes one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate, and usually supports NRA-backed legislation. Check out this bottom-to-top exchange of e-mails between the senator and a voter in south Georgia, distributed today by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. In the finale, Douglas accuses the NRA of acting like a hysterical teenaged girl.

A list of national hate groups produced by an internationally known civil rights organization now includes the name of MSU's chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, the first university-affiliated group to be placed on the list.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's annual Hate Group list, which names more than 800 groups in the country and 25 in Michigan, is predominantly symbolic and does not imply any consequences or penalties.

The list is released to approximately 50,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide that uses the list as a tool for monitoring hate groups, said Heidi Beirich, deputy director of the Intelligence Project, which monitors hate and extremist activity through the law center.

With stark clarity, the recent killing of two auxiliary police officers in Greenwich Village demonstrates the need for laws making it hard for criminals to obtain the weapons they use to kill. We may never know what exactly prompted David Garvin's March 14 rampage in which he ruthlessly shot and murdered two unarmed auxiliary police officers, Nicholas Pekearo and Yevgeniy (Eugene) Marshalik. The patrolmen were responding to reports of gunshots at a nearby pizzeria, where Garvin had just fired 15 rounds into Alfredo Romero. What we do understand, though, is the pathology of Albany gridlock, which for years has stymied efforts to keep guns away from those who use them to harm others.

Just last year, the Idaho Legislature amended the self defense law. Now, anyone who uses force in an incident of self defense is immune from any civil liability. But for a law that varies from state to state, what does Idaho consider self defense or justifiable homicide?

John Radin, Defense Attorney: "If someone's the aggressor and comes onto your property and may not have the intent to kill you, you have the right to defend yourself and use lethal force to defend."

The Des Moines Police Department and the Polk County Attorney have determined that no charges will be filed in this case. In other words, the victim was justified in her actions of using deadly force. From what I have read in the paper - that is my only source of information - I tend to agree with that decision and believe that this is a case of self-defense.

Op-Ed: Law and Order and Guns - Rudy has some funny views on guns

One persons reasonable and sensible gun laws arent always anothers. So when Rudy Giuliani recognizes that the Second Amendment guarantees people the right to bear arms subject to reasonable and sensible laws, it really doesnt tell us much. Yet one thing is for sure though: Giuliani is hardly a strict constructionist on constitutional matters, at least when it comes to the Second Amendment. It is a long ways from shall not be infringed to shall infringe whenever Congress has a reasonable and sensible justification.

Many politicians, most of whom are Democrats, openly and universally believe gun control reduces violence, despite no credible evidence that gun control has any effect on the lawless few among us. What they ignore is the simple truth that an armed society is a polite society, because lawful gun ownership is a threat to no one except a criminal or a politician.

TN: Bredesen Should Back Off On Gun Bill

I would like to make a comment on the bill that is being drawn up for Tennessee by Sen. Mark Norris. This bill would prevent Gov. Breseden, or any agency, from confiscating our guns and ammunition during disaster or declared emergencies.

Gov. Bredesen sent Mark a letter requesting him to drop the bill because Bredesen stated he was against this bill.

Our second amendment protects our right to bear arms during anytime, and Bredesen and his Democrats have no right to confisticate anything. That puts him in the dictator bracket.
