"This weekend the organizers of the Facebook group "open carry movement" sent a message to its members captioned "open carry nation." The group is shooting to fire up a nation-wide cyber-roots push for legislative progress to "repeal the last 7 state bans on openly carrying properly holstered firearms," . . .
Incredibly, Don Scott, president of a self-proclaimed gun rights group calling itself the Oklahoma Rifle Association (ORA), has urged the Oklahoma House to kill the open carry bill by falsely claiming that the purchase of handguns by persons under the age of 21 is in violation of existing federal law. . . .
Email ORA President Don Scott today at [email protected] and ask him to Retract your lie! about . . ."

Republican lawmakers have come forward to sponsor bills repealing the automatic early release of certain inmates six months before the end of their sentence, as was called for this week by Gov. Chris Christie.
The move comes after an inmate who'd been freed early was charged six week later with shooting a man to death outside a party in Jersey City.
"Protecting the public is one of the first duties of government," said Republican Assemblyman Dave Rible, a sponsor of the Assembly bill to repeal the provision.
Submitter's note: Like the NRA said in there letter to Obama, put criminals in jail and keep them there till there time is done. Perfect example. |

Gov. Chris Christie has nominated Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, a Morris County Republican and one of the most conservative lawmakers in New Jersey, to be a judge on the state Superior Court.
Submitter's note: Thanks to Chris Christie it looks like New Jersey is headed in the right direction. We need more smart and qualified people like Patrick Carroll in New Jersey. People who enforce the law as it is written. |

Even the staunchest proponents of gun control must admit Jeffrey Muller has a good reason for wanting to pack a handgun.
...
But a Superior Court judge in Morristown this week denied his second request for the permit, saying he provided no proof of justifiable need to carry a weapon.
Come again? This guy has more reason than anyone to take advantage of his Second Amendment rights. For Gods sake, give this poor Muller his gun.
Submitter's note: "Justifiable Need" requirement in NJ to tough for anyone to get a permit that should have one. |

A bill allowing worshipers to carry handguns in church passed the House and it's on the way to the Senate. To see the full bill, click on the link under the picture.
It is currently illegal to carry a gun into church, but if the bill passes, those with conceal carry permits could carry them with permission from the pastor.
The bill's sponsor says it's needed because armed criminals know law-abiding people can't have guns in places firearms are prohibited, but church leaders we spoke with don't think the measure is a blessing. |

As bills that would allow residents with concealed handgun permits to carry guns on public college campuses works their way through the Texas Legislature, faculty at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin are voicing concern.
UTPBs faculty senate recently approved a resolution against the passage of legislation like Senate Bill 354 and its companion, House Bill 86. The Senate bill, which was co-authored by Sen. Kel Seliger, who represents much of the area, is currently before the Criminal Justice Committee while the House version is in the Homeland Security & Public Safety Committee.
I think its a disaster, UTPB assistant professor of education and counseling Linda Autry, a faculty senate member, said. |

Arkansans could soon be allowed to take guns to church. House Bill 1958 passed the house Friday. It makes it legal to take a gun into a church. It is currently illegal to take a gun into church, with or without a permit.
If passed, this bill would change that, but there are limits. It comes down to the choice of church leaders at every individual place of worship.
Sunday service at the Apostolic Church in North Little Rock is a place for praise, a place for prayer, and a place undecided about guns. "I think it could perhaps bring on some danger or encourage some danger or maybe even some violence," says church member Allen Brady.

House Bill 2790 is proposed to allow the constitutional carry of a firearm without a permit (government permission). Our rights are our rights and are not privileges to be controlled or doled out by the government. Any right.
Our constitutions (both federal and state) clearly state that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. In other words, there is no permission required to exercise a right. Any right. |

Why did the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives stand by and watch as guns were transported across our southern border to Mexico, to be used by violent drug cartels?
The phenomenon of gunwalking appears to be a standard sting-operation tactic that in this case has gone wildly awry. The idea was that federal authorities would approve firearms purchases that seemed suspicious, and then monitor the buyers to see where the guns ended up. But the scale of the purchases was massive, and the agents on the ground kept anxiously waiting for the order to stop monitoring and intervene, according to stunning accounts from ATF agents and documentation uncovered by CBS News and other sources. |

In just another scandal de Jour for this administration it now appears the ATF is actually giving guns to the cartels some of which were used to kill Federal Agents and Border Patrols.
In typical fashion the Administration stated they knew nothing and were not aware of the program.

A Quakertown High School health teacher is being blasted by a parent for allegedly pushing his political agenda in the classroom.
The parent, Glenn Rickabaugh, says the teacher has also allegedly bashed the Tea Party movement and criticized the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
"What does any of this have to do with health?" asks Rickabaugh, who on Thursday presented his concerns to the Quakertown School Board regarding Craig Stephens, a health teacher at the high school. |

When I walked into Mitch Houser's Right to Carry course, I wasn't packing heat, but I was weighed down by a bellyful of well-worn biases about the kind of person who wants to strut around armed.
Do you really need a piece to run to Giant Eagle for milk? Nobody I knew had an arsenal in the basement or would admit to owning even one gun.
For $140 -- plus the cost of a rental piece and 100 rounds of factory-loaded ammunition -- Houser, an off-duty sergeant with the Euclid Police Department, was going to help me and eight others qualify for a license to carry a concealed handgun. |

Perhaps even more disturbing than the giveaway itself is the fact that it has been incredibly successful. According to Steve Strand, the proprietor of the store, the free guns promotion has tripled his business. Maybe we are just hopelessly out of touch with modern society or maybe our status as college students from New Jersey is preventing us from understanding why people in Montana seem to love guns so much. Whatever the case, we are having a really hard time grasping the logic behind this promotion and its success.
Even though customers have to undergo background checks before claiming their free weapon, we still think this is a wildly irresponsible promotion. |

Culture is a strange thing. Elements that appear normal in one culture--say, drinking a beer on the street when you're as old as 20--are reviled in another.
So one has to accept that pockets of humanity see the world in their own way.
However, a promotion by Radio Shack in Hamilton, Mont., might move one or two people to move there just to benefit from its full-bore imaginative core.
For the Ravalli Republic reports that the Radio Shack Super Store in Hamilton has a very fine sign of the times outside its store.
It reads: "PROTECT YOURSELF WITH DISH NETWORK SIGN UP NOW GET FREE GUN." |

After the suspect's arrest, a neighbor found a knife he believes belonged to the man. Officers returned to pick it up. |

Despite what lawmakers may think to the contrary, there are firearms on Idahos college campuses today.
The observant and somewhat skeptical legislator may respond, thats impossible. Its against policy to have guns on Idahos university grounds.
True. But the assumption that our colleges are devoid of firearms assumes that the mere existence of a law means people will follow it.
Indeed, Idahos colleges and universities carefully regulate the use of drugs and alcohol, and those regulations are likewise routinely ignored.
Yes, there are firearms on our campuses, and some of those weapons are being carried by people who may intend harm. The prohibition against firearms merely serves as a strong deterrent for the law-abiding. |

Utah recently took a huge symbolic step forward by naming the Browning M1911 the state's official gun.
This is the first state to take such action, although Arizona is thinking of doing the same, naming the Colt single-action as Arizona's state gun.
Far too many people are crying foul over these symbolic gestures. They are missing the vast, rich history and love affair this great country has had with the firearm.
Guns enable us to protect ourselves and our loved ones. They are the reason we could fight and win our independence through the Revolutionary War, and they supply hours of fun for families all across America. |

We are not supporters of the state's 1995 law allowing qualified adults to get licenses to carry concealed handguns. But, as is often the case with hot-button issues, the extremes predicted by both sides during that debate have not materialized.
We have not, as opponents opined, reverted to some kind of Wild West existence with shootouts at high noon and other times of the day. Somehow, we have remained a fairly civilized society.
...
We'd like to think that even people in those situations could find ways to feel safe without packing a pistol. Perhaps we are naive.
Ed.: Yes, perhaps. |
