Ypsilanti is in the process of relegating gun retailers and ranges to often undesirable locations in the city alongside strip clubs, massage parlors and pornography shops.
The City Council, with three members absent, voted 4-0 on March 19 to pass the new zoning ordinance, after a first first reading. A second reading and another opportunity for public comment is scheduled for April 2. If the ordinance passes a second time, the zoning limitation takes effect in 30 days.
Mayor Beth Bashert, Councilwoman Nicole Brown, Councilman Steve Wilcoxen and Councilman Anthony Morgan cast the yes votes to further restrict zoning for gun-related commercial businesses.

Detroit police say an officer has been fired after an internal investigation into alleged drug dealing.
Police Chief James Craig says the probationary officer was arrested Sunday and taken from jail to a hearing at police headquarters Tuesday, where she was fired. Craig says the 29-year-old was arrested along with a person who was a felon in possession of a stolen firearm. He says a search turned up "rock cocaine and a small amount of heroin."
Craig tells The Detroit News that the woman was dressed in jail garb when she was brought for the hearing. He says: "That sends a message that this kind of behavior won't be tolerated." |

A Walled Lake Western High School student is not allowed to return to school grounds after he was randomly shot in Detroit last month, according to a report from WXYZ-TV.
The student, named Michael, told WXYZ that he is no longer allowed to attend any school activities, which included prom. The school, WXYZ said, sent a letter to the student's mother, saying that it was concerned with students' safety and retaliation if Michael returned to campus.
The letter, WXYZ said, also stated that the decision was made based on the alleged shooter still being "out there and potentially armed."
The student said he did not file charges because "there's no one for me to press charges against. I don't know who shot me."

As of March 26, 2019 bump stocks are federally illegal.
The Justice Department set the final rule in December 2018, giving bump stock owners 90 days to destroy or drop off their device to ATF.
Under Michigan law 750.224e. bump stocks are still technically legal in Michigan.
Part of the law reads that "a person shall not knowingly manufacture, sell, distribute, or possess or attempt to manufacture, sell, distribute, or possess a device that is designed or intended to be used to convert a semiautomatic firearm into a fully automatic firearm."
They [bump stocks] are not that popular of an item," said Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel. "Really the only time anybody ever uses them now is in a gun range, or that type of situation." |

The former police chief of a central Michigan village has pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and filing a false income tax return.
Prosecutors said Tuesday that former Oakley Police Chief Robert Reznick entered the plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Morris in Bay City.
Court records say Reznick used his position as police chief to obtain reduced prices on firearms, ammunition, and other equipment from suppliers, then sold the merchandise to reserve officers for personal profit. Prosecutors say that while the population of Oakley was under 300 people, Reznick recruited and maintained a roster of approximately 120 reserve officers, most of whom lived outside of Oakley.

Self-reported data, even in much less sensitive circumstances, has always been a problem for research accuracy, and the authors know that. But they dont even mention it in their writing. They dont want to acknowledge that their entire hypothesis comes crashing down if the gun ownership numbers are wrongwhich they almost certainly are. The approximately 250 million firearms that have been added to the existing supply in the United States since 1976 arent just vanishing into thin air or being thrown into dumpsters, yet this is what their numbers would suggest. |

Senate Bill 621 would allow a court to require an individual to surrender firearms to law enforcement or have them seized, based on statements made by a petitioner in an ex parte proceeding -- before any formal hearing with the opportunity to be represented by counsel and present counter-evidence -- and even though they may not have committed or even threatened to commit any unlawful or violent act. Someone could be stripped of their Second Amendment rights without due process, without being taken into custody for any criminal offense or without being required to undergo evaluation for treatment by a mental health professional. |

Kansas has what is called constitutional carry, or the right to carry a firearm in any capacity, for residents 21 and older. A concealed carry license, available to those who complete required training, allows the holder to carry in states that have reciprocal agreements with Kansas.
Under the new law, the minimum age for concealed carry training would drop to 18. Residents who don't receive a license at 18 would still be allowed constitutional carry in the state at age 21. |

"Not only do they have presumption of innocence on the underlying charges, they also have the presumption they acted in self-defense," said Awadallah.
We're already getting our first look at what this will mean for those on both sides of the courtroom.
"As you see in the video, there is a very aggressive attack on him and he's rebuffing that attack by using the weapon that he had," said Awadallah.
Awadallah is talking about a October 2017 altercation at the Westender Tavern which ends with Joshua Walker shooting and killing Aaron Mason. |

House Bill 206 would lower the age of Idahos permitless carry laws from 21 to 18. This important legislation would allow those adults aged 18 and older who are legally allowed to carry a firearm for self-defense, to do so within city limits without having to pay fees and obtain a government-issued license to do so. Current law allows permitless concealed carry by those 18 years and above outside of the city limits. |

Several Iowa judges have tackled "stand your ground" claims differently.
Judges in Linn and Johnson counties have denied those claims, while a Montgomery County judge held a pretrial hearing and released a Red Oak man who shot and killed one of two attackers who ambushed him in an alley.
But that man, Kevin Staley, the first Iowan granted immunity under the law, was later sentenced to more than six years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. |

The National Rifle Association is preparing to punish lawmakers for voting to protect women from their stalkers and domestic abusers. The gun lobby announced this week that it will dock its grades for politicians who vote to renew the Violence Against Women Act. The legislation, first passed in 1994, is up for reauthorization this session augmented by a provision that could give law enforcement officials the power to confiscate guns from men who hurt or menace women.
NRA spokesperson Jennifer Baker told the National Journal that this red-flag provision intended to protect women against gun violence from men who are exhibiting violent or dangerous behaviors is an unacceptable encroachment on individual gun ownership rights. |

Minnesotas top Senate Republican is opening the door for hearings on two gun control bills, but theres a catch.
Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said the House would have to pass both bills first. One measure requires background checks for all gun sales, while the other would allow police to seize guns from a person whom a judge deems a threat.
The measures have passed two House committees controlled by Democrats, but have been stuck in the Senate. Two weeks ago, the Senate Judiciary committee chairman said he would not hold hearings on either bill. |

So, in my description of the origins of the 2,000-Round Challenge, I mentioned that the whole idea of the challenge was as follows: Modern service pistols will generally have no difficulty making it through 2,000 rounds without any attention maintenance-wise, provided theyd initially been adequately lubed with a quality lubricant and are fed in-spec ammunition through good mags.
This might make the subject of my first 2K Challenge write-up seem a little off-beat, since the Glock G43 is decidedly not a service pistol. |

The Dan Wesson Guardian 1911 had a considerable advantage going into this review: the CCO configuration (Commander-length slide, lightweight Officer-size frame) is my favorite for 1911-based, concealed-carry pistols. The grip, not the barrel, is the most difficult part of a semi-automatic to conceal. A 4.25-inch barrel seems the ideal compromise between concealability, balance, quick handling, enhanced sight radius and good velocity. Also, it allows the preservation of John Brownings original system and internal geometry. All that was required of Dan Wesson was to execute the concept well. |
