MI: Michigan build-your-own AR-15 class provokes backlash

A Michigan gun store owner shrugged off criticism and went ahead with a class that teaches people how to build their own AR-15 semi-automatic rifles like those used in many mass shootings, including last month's massacre at a Florida high school.

Chris Walden, who owns Walden's Firearms in nearby Battle Creek and taught Tuesday's class, said postponing it until there isn't a mass shooting in the United States could mean it would never happen.

"There's always significant things going on and if we tried to weave that between whatever tragedy and anything else, I'm not sure we'd ever find a good time," Walden said. "Now's as good a time as any."

When I was just five years old, before I had even started kindergarten, I received a tiny rifle for Christmas, a .22-caliber bolt-action rod called a Chipmunk, built for and marketed to small children. By the time I was twelve I owned a small arsenal of five guns, and proudly possessed a lifetime hunting and fishing license for the state of Oklahoma. But it wasnt long before I discovered punk rock, and with it a hatred of all things redneck, including those formerly precious guns. Into my dads gun safe they went. Id sworn off guns foreveror so I thought.

In his 2008 dissent in District of Columbia v. Heller, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens insisted that the Second Amendment offers zero protection for what he called the "right to possess and use guns for nonmilitary purposes like hunting and personal self-defense."

In an op-ed for the New York Times, the retired justice reiterated that view, writing that, "For over 200 years after the adoption of the Second Amendment, it was uniformly understood as not placing any limit on either federal or state authority to enact gun control legislation."

For the vast majority of Americas youth who refused to be used as a political pawn in Saturdays anti-gun marches, I congratulate you!

It is courageous to stand for freedom against government tyranny, especially when your peers are receiving breathless praise from the nations media outlets. This is why you, as the vast majority of Americas youth, should not remain silent as your fellow students claim to speak for you in demanding that your right to self-defense be given away. Your right to self-defense is not theirs to give.

Sometimes the young are wiser than their elders. Days after the survivors of the Stoneman Douglas slaughter stunned the world with the 800-city #MarchForOurLives and their brilliantly effective call for laws to stem the tide of gun violence, retired Supreme Court justice John Paul Stevens handed the gun lobby a rhetorical howitzer.

In the middle of an emotional town hall event one week after the Parkland shooting, Marco Rubio said something that put him at odds with most Republican lawmakers: Limiting the size of magazines, the spring-loaded devices that feed bullet cartridges into guns, "may save lives" during attacks like the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people.

A Los Angeles lawmaker wants the city to cut ties with companies that are linked to the National Rifle Assn., saying that its opposition to "common sense gun safety laws" is at odds with the city.

City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell introduced a proposal Wednesday asking city staffers to provide a list of all businesses and groups that have a "formal relationship" with the NRA and lay out options for boycotting them.

"It's important that we send a message as a city with an annual budget approaching $9 billion," O'Farrell said, invoking mass shootings in Newtown, Conn.; Orlando, Fla.; Las Vegas; and Parkland, Fla.; as well as gun violence that happens regularly across the country.

Many have even absurdly claimed that the organization, devoted to preserving individuals inherent and constitutionally protected right to self-defense, was a terrorist organization, and that it had blood on its hands, because one disturbed young man used a gun to cause a horrendous tragedy (notwithstanding numerous opportunities and failures of federal and local government authorities to intervene, and possibly prevent such an attack). Moreover, despite the media hysteria and predictable drumbeat for more gun control surrounding each and every school shooting, the number of kids getting shot and killed in schools has actually declined significantly since the 1990s, as have crimes rates (including gun crimes) generally

An estimated 500 people from throughout Sussex County and beyond flooded the Newton Green on Saturday, March 24, in coordination with the national gun violence protest organized by student survivors of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Students led the way in Newton as well; the protest was organized by Zoe Heath, 18, a senior at Vernon High School, with additional support from groups such as the Sussex County chapters of the Brady Campaign and the National Organization for Women (Sussex County NOW).

Tomi Lahren has made her name as a sharped-tongued right-wing commentator, not as a fashion influencer. So it certainly caught peoples attention when the 25-year-old posted what appeared to be a sponsored Instagram photo for an activewear brand.

But Lahren wasnt wearing just any pair of leggings; they were a pair of Alexo Athletica leggings, which are meant to conceal a persons firearm as they exercise.

Ive never taken part in a rally on Washington, but last Saturdays March for Our Lives seemed like a worthy one to try. Climbing on a bus with 50 others at 10 p.m. the night before was difficult, but nothing in comparison to the pain someone must experience when they lose a loved one to violence. Their lasting grief is huge and makes a few sleepless hours on a long ride insignificant.

These were all pieces of legislation which I voted to support, some of which I co-sponsored. These new laws serve as a record of substantive improvements toward keeping Delawareans safe and stand in contrast to the narrative being made by many gun control advocates that Delaware legislators have not taken aggressive steps toward addressing gun violence.

NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch on Thursday berated the survivors of a mass shooting in Parkland, Florida for taking part in an anti-gun rally in Washington, D.C. instead of spending the money on school security.

Loesch began her weekly appearance on Fox & Friends by arguing that Democrats should be forced to admit that they want to abolish the Second Amendment.

Thats exactly what they want, she insisted. They just stop short of actually articulating it because they know it doesnt poll well.

Loesch reacted to last weekends March for Our Lives by calling herself a free speech purist and then slamming the participants of the event.

Years later, Stevens wrote a book which argued in favor of amending the Second Amendment to reverse the Heller decision and give his side the win. On Tuesday, however, Stevens dropped the pretense of believing the Second Amendment has any value at all, arguing in a New York Times editorial that the concerns which underlie the amendment are a relic of the 18th century and that it should be repealed in its entirety.

Your third point is specious nonsense. The NRA (of which I am no fan), is a training organization and special interest organization supported by money (dues) from millions of gun owners. It (supposedly) represents their interests same as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce represents business interests, AARP represents senior interests and unions represent labor interests. But as I wrote in the column you referenced, the NRA is a surrender organization that has lobbied for or granted its tacit support of every gun law ever passed in the U.S. It has already signaled its willingness to surrender on bump stocks and red flag laws.

The radical left seeks to disarm and control America. It is harder to control people, if they have a strong method of self-defense; therefore, guns must be banned and confiscated. Just as authoritarian dictators used children to promote their agendas, progressives are using the same tactics and propaganda. It is important for rational Americans to see the March for Our Lives movement as what it truly is: a politically organized group of liberal children, attempting to tug at Americas heartstrings, demanding people to relinquish their rights for a false sense of security.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Most reporters are very sympathetic to gun-control agendas and will skew or lie outright about facts to promote them. DENNIS CAUCHON, USA TODAY
