In 1963 I learned life is not fair. Bruce had been absent a week. A lot of classes to miss. A lot to make up. But then he returned, a broad grin splitting cheeks red from Novembers wind. Details came soon enough. Hed been given given! a Winchester 94 .30-30, and hied off with his father to the clans deer camp in Michigans Upper Peninsula. There, on opening day, hed used his new rifle to kill an eight-point buck an eight-pointer!

Like so many things in the self-defense community, the issue of hitting bystanders with defensive gunfire is somewhat contested as to how real or pertinent a danger it proves to be. In my assessment, most leading experts in the firearms training field focus heavily on accountability with your shooting. Every round hits something, so being cognizant of what is behind, in front of, or around your target is of paramount importance. However, some experts seem to dismiss the issue as perhaps an important consideration but an unlikely eventuality, suggesting that it rarely happens. So, what is the truth regarding the possibility of hitting bystanders? Does it happen? Is it a pressing concern? |

Choice is an essential part of any healthy relationship. As Americans, we are free to select our mates, determine the size of our families, decide where and how to live, settle on our vocations, vote for our governmental representatives and buy the material goods that suit our needs and desires. Within that last category exist more than 7,400 print consumer magazines, and the one you hold in your hands has recently been ranked as high as 19th among them in terms of its circulation. Thats a powerful statement as to the choice that Americans continue to make regarding the importance of firearms, optics, ammunition and related gun accessories in their lives.

We are strange creatures. We see the world and build mental models of how the world works. Soon, those models become more significant to us than reality itself. That is dangerous when so much of our experience is from the news and entertainment media. We think our tiny screens show us what is really happening in the world. We want to be careful about what we put into our heads. |

As with any full metal jacket bullet, the FMJ boat tail is fully (or mostly) encased in copper or another hard metal or material. Roughly resembling the shape of a boat, boat tails are named for their designed tapered rear when viewed from the side. This bullet type is commonly used for competition shooting due to their easy assembly. These rounds tend to be easy to assemble without denting, nicking or scratching the bullet surface and any tiny imperfection can lead to unwanted bullet performance, or can even cause issues with the casing. |

The Statehouse is back open, and anti-gun politicians are planning to take it out on law-abiding gun owners this week. Both the House and the Senate Judiciary Committees are planning marathon gun bill hearings on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. This latest onslaught contains over two dozen bills each night, and while there are a few pro-gun bills on the agenda, the vast majority of the agenda is filled with severe restrictions on the Second Amendment, including magazine and semi-auto bans. |

Second Amendment supporters are correctly focused on the upcoming mid-term elections, during which a lot of gubernatorial races, state legislature seats, not to mention the entire United States House of Representatives, and 35 seats in the United States Senate (to include the seat vacated by James Inhofe, a longtime Second Amendment champion). But there will be other races to focus on which will have long-term effects on the Second Amendment.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on President Joe Bidens nomination of D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. As with other recent Democratic nominees to the Supreme Court, Jackson sought to quell concerns that she would work to undermine or undo the Courts landmark Second Amendment rulings in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago. Gun owners, having been misled by a past Supreme Court nominee, should put little faith in Jacksons statements.

Sen. John Marty, (DFL) Roseville, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS his proposed bill which would require gun owners to have a license would, in the long run, help save lives. Under Martys proposed bill, anyone purchasing a gun at a commercial business, gun shows or through individual sales, would have to acquire a license which would require gun safety education and training similar to what people have to do when they obtain a drivers license.

A state senator says the same all hands on deck approach that Illinois governor took to expunge cannabis convictions should be used to clear the backlog of Concealed Carry License applications.
A patchwork of U.S. states have varying degrees of laws dealing with who can or cannot carry a firearm. Most states dont require a permit for a resident to buy guns or ammo. Other states allow anyone to carry a gun in the open or even concealed without a permit. |

Two years ago, Canadas Liberal Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced a sweeping, immediate ban of thousands of firearm models and variants, imposed unilaterally through Orders in Council. The rationale was that these previously lawful sporting and hunting guns were military grade assault weapons, a term that doesnt exist in Canadian law.

Editors Note: One current fad among outdoorsmen is to bash 6.5mm cartridges, with the 6.5 Creedmoor being the particular target of ire for this vocal minority of malcontents. But the emergence of that cartridge, and the also impressive 6.547 Lapua and 6.5 PRC were no accident. There had been a growing trend for decades to come up with the best 6.5mm cartridge that leveraged the recent advancements in ballistic technology. With better powders, bullets and a refined sense of cartridge design, accuracy-obsessed riflemen, like my predecessor as Outdoor Lifes shooting editor, Jim Carmichel, were pushing the boundaries.
