When is the right time to teach your kids to shoot a gun and teach them gun safety. Those are two different questions with two different answers. We've heard the tragic stories of accidental shootings. I firmly believe that knowledge is power when it comes to kids and guns. The earlier children learn basic gun safety the better.
Teach your children to never touch a gun without an adult present. Teach them to tell their friends the same thing. Teach the NRA basic gun safety rules whether or not they they are ready to shoot a gun. Teach them to every child you know.
When the time is right for them to learn to shoot.. |

Tennessee just named its state rifle: the .50-caliber Barrett, one of the most powerful rifles in the world. The Barrett Model 82A1 now shares state symbol status alongside the mockingbird, the tomato and the raccoon. "We are incredibly honored," said Chris Barrett, company president. "We're bringing pride and honor to our state." The rifle was invented in Tennessee in 1982 by his father Ronnie Barrett, who was a photographer working out of his garage at the time, and is now the company's CEO. |

February was the third-biggest month on record for gun background checks, according to data released Wednesday by the FBI. Background checks, which the FBI conducts every time someone tries to buy a gun from a federally licensed dealer, rose to 2.6 million in February, according to the bureau. February's total falls short of the record set in December, 2015, when 3.3 million background checks were recorded. The second biggest month was in December, 2012, the month of the Sandy Hook school massacre that killed 26, when the FBI logged 2.8 million checks. |

An initial investigation into Tuesday night's shooting of two young men in Queen Village has concluded that the 65-year-old gunman acted in self-defense, police said Wednesday.
The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. on the 700 block of South Second Street, police said.
The man's wife told police that she and her husband were walking on Second when they passed two men in their 20s and one of them barked, "What are you looking at?" |

Sen. Kurt Schaefer told a senate panel Wednesday that people should be able to do whatever it takes to defend themselves without worrying about a lawsuit afterward.
Current law allows people to use deadly force if they believe it is necessary to protect themselves from a serious or fatal injury or against a forcible felony. Otherwise, a person is expected to retreat from a confrontational situation, unless he or she is in a home, car or other private property. |

The current self-defense format, known as the castle doctrine, has been a part of Missouri law since 2007.
Stand your ground rules would expand on the castle doctrine, and allow a person to use deadly force in self-defense without the duty of retreating, wherever they have a right to be in public, like a school, church, or sidewalk.
State Senator Kurt Schaefer (R 19th District) is hoping to expand the rules, and he spoke to a senate panel on Wednesday about the possible change. |

The gun craze that stampeded legislators into requiring public colleges and universities to allow handguns on campus and in classrooms already has upset faculty members and students who opposed it.
At the University of Texas at Austin, a mile from the Capitol, the new law is causing the loss of the dean of the School of Architecture. Fritz Steiner, at UT since 2001, is leaving Texas to be dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He previously taught at Pennsylvania. |

Some of the comments submitted by readers of the AJC article Will guns on campus scare away high school students and their parents? indicate these commenters need a little extra education in critical thinking, and at the very least, need to pay attention to basic facts regarding HB 859 that recently passed in House of the Georgia General Assembly. |

Well, there are more permits, more background checks, more purchases, more crime, and more debate than ever.
A closer look at stats reveal that people living in the valley are following national trends. Across the U.S., purchases are at an all-time high. In 2015, the FBI conducted 44 firearms background checks every minute.
"Over the last 3 years, I've seen a rise in handgun sales," said Matt Smith, owner of Smith Outfitters.
"People are just getting scared and think, 'well it's best to protect myself,'" said Dave Viltor, owner of the Sportsman's Trading Post.

On March 2, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hannah Ferguson defended gun ownership, describing how she learned to shoot and suggesting people who fear firearm ownership do so from a lack of gun knowledge.
Ferguson told Fox 441 that her father was a sniper in the Marine Corps and her mother and brother were in the USMC as well. So her love for guns is mixed in with a love for the military. |

The Constitution does, in fact, guarantee that one has the right to possess and use a firearm to protect oneself or ones family and property against any aggressor, whether that aggressor is a stranger, a terrorist, a neighbor or an agent of an oppressive, dictatorial government. That basic natural right is paramount to the survival of our free republic, as well as to the individual, as much today as it was at the time of the creation of the Constitution. |

Unfortunately, this is only the most recent action in the Administrations long-running campaign to place more regulations on owning and purchasing guns. I believe the Presidents focus is all wrong. We should enforce our current laws, fix our flawed mental health system and combat terrorism.
In fact, research conducted by Syracuse University shows that firearm prosecutions peaked at 11,015 under the Bush Administration in 2004, and dropped to 6,600 in 2014 under the current Administration. |

Another bill nixing the need for a concealed carry permit within city limits, this time with House GOP leadership support, was introduced on Wednesday.
The bill would allow anybody to carry concealed within city limits who is older than 21 and not otherwise barred from owning a gun because of a felony conviction, mental illness or other reason on a list that is already part of the law as a reason to deny a concealed carry permit, said Sen. Curt McKenzie, R-Nampa, who introduced the bill into the Senate State Affairs Committee.
It makes our concealed carry law consistent between counties and cities, said McKenzie, who is also chairman of that Senate committee. |

While gun stocks have performed extremely well during the Obama administration, theyve tended to trade off the peaks that they hit shortly after political-inspired spikes. Dealers ordered too much stock and then struggled to sell their bloated inventories.
But with Obamas term coming to an end, the great inadvertent gun salesman is retiring.
Of the presidential candidates, all of the Republicans are pretty gun-friendly, as is Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side. Hillary Clinton is less gun-friendly, but the kind of hysteria that accompanied the Obama administration is unlikely to continue in a Clinton presidency. |

Conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has died. What was a five to four advantage on the High Court for proponents of the Second Amendment is now an even split, and Democrats, always itching to have their way, with gun control and a host of other progressive agenda items, see a great chance to reverse polarity. So theyre pressuring the Republican-controlled Senate to exercise its Constitutional authority and provide advice and consent for Barack Obamas nominee to replace Scalia. |

The battle over the Second Amendment has returned to the California Legislature. An Assembly committee approved several new gun control measures Tuesday on party-line votes.
One measure would prohibit tools like bullet buttons that critics say are used to evade Californias ban on assault rifles.
The gun manufacturers have essentially made a mockery of our laws, says Levine.
Democratic Assemblyman Mark Levine is the bills author.
And if we are going to lead the nation, we need to strengthen our laws to make sure that no one can evade them. says Levine.
Other bills would ban semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines and limit gun sales to one per person per month. |

Former police chief Balentine has now accepted a plea deal in federal court on a stolen property charge. I called Jamie Williams, the Daily Citizen writer who covered the case for more details.
Williams confirmed that an investigation into the burning of Balentines truck led towards Balentine himself, and the discovery that Balentine took a firearm that had been donated to the police department for a charity auction, sold the gun, and pocketed the proceeds. It is this stolen property charge that Balentine is pleading guilty to in what appears to be a deal to avoid mail fraud charges for the arson of his truck. |

Record breaking gun sales continued once again in the month of February.
There were 2,613,074 firearms-related background checks performed by the FBI over the 29 days in February, a record for the month. February is now the ninth month in a row that has seen a record number of checks. The month saw fewer checks than the single-month record set in December 2015, but also saw an increase in checks over last month. |

The controversial campus carry gun bill gets a hearing today in the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting at 3 p.m.
It appears a warm Senate reception awaits House Bill 859, which would allow anyone 21 or older with a weapons license to carry a gun at a public college or university campus. Dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and athletic events would be excluded.
MyAJC.com reports the head of the Senate, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, will not block the bill, telling reporters, I look forward to being at the governors signing ceremony for the gun bill. |

Could you imagine being a business owner; selling a legal, functional product; and being sued every time an individual who buys your product uses it to commit a crime?
Should a rope manufacturer be liable when someone is hanged by that rope? Should a knife manufacturer be liable when someone is stabbed? Could a restaurant be sued when someone eats its perfectly safe food but dies of a heart attack or diabetic shock?
In each of these cases, the product being sold is legal, and it works. And in each of these cases, we dont think the manufacturer should be held responsible for damage that comes from using a safe product as advertised. But some activists think gun manufacturers and retailers should be held to a different standard. |

In a world of uncertainty, the Second Amendment to the Constitution is undeniably clear: The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Today, Florida is one of only five states infringing on the rights of citizens to openly carry handguns. Thats right. Open carry is legal in various forms in 45 other states. Florida joins California, New York, Illinois and (oddly) South Carolina as the only states to totally prohibit open carry. Thirty states do not require a license, while 15 do.
