CARTHAGE, N.C. - A gunman opened fire at a North Carolina nursing home Sunday morning, killing at least eight people and wounding several others, police and a state senator said.
The gunman was also injured before he was apprehended by police after the 10 a.m. shooting at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the town of Carthage, Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie told several television stations. A police officer was also hurt.

"It's a horrible event, in any size town, particularly though when you deal with a small town such as Carthage," McKenzie said at a press conference earlier this afternoon. "It's hard. This is my town, I was born and raised here, so yeah, I take it to heart a little bit but, um, all you can do is move forward."
The town of Carthage has a population of about 1,800 people and a police force consisting of 18 officers.
"This is a small community built on faith, and faith will get us through," he later said.

A man allegedly attempting to rob a northwest Harris County cell phone store died after he was shot by the business owner and then hit by a car as he attempted to flee, authorities said.
The store owner produced his own handgun and the alleged robbers fled the business, Legg said.
One of the men fled the scene in a 90s model red Ford Taurus, while the other man stopped and turned toward the store owner, Legg said. At that time, the owner of the store fired several shots towards the suspect, hitting him once, Legg said.
However, the alleged robber continued to run through the parking lot and attempted to run across Barker Cypress, where he was hit by a car. |

"The United States is flooded with guns. With an estimated 280 million firearms in civilian hands, there are enough guns to arm nearly every man, woman and child in our country making us the most heavily armed nation on earth."
"While we can thank the gun lobby for this dubious honor, the politicians who cave into their demands should be held accountable as well."
"With over 30,000 gun deaths in the U.S. each year ... an appropriate response to this carnage should be bold and comprehensive policies to prevent further homicides, suicides and unintentional injuries. ..." ... -------
Submitter's Note: So 30,000 'gun deaths' from 280,000,000 guns means for every 'gun death' there are 9,999 guns that killed no one.
Ed.: Outrageous! 26 million fewer guns than people in America. Reportedly only 4.5 million guns are bought each year. Slackers! ;-) Let's make 2009 a banner year, and buy 26 million modern semi-automatic weapons! |

Drug violence in Mexico has "gotten out of hand" and poses a serious threat to communities along the US-Mexico border, President Barack Obama said Sunday.
But Obama, in an interview with CBS television, said his administration would wait to see the impact of stepped up US law enforcement efforts before deploying national guard troops to the border.
Echoing comments in Mexico last week by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama called the drug crisis in the south a "two-way street" fueled by US demand for drugs and availability of weapons.
"We've got to reduce demand for drugs. We've got to do our part in reducing the flow of cash and guns south," he said.

A local judge fears for his life. The newspaper article quotes him: "Most killings of judges usually stem from domestic cases, so Im concerned. Ive been terrified all day." Well, his fear would seem justified.
The judge had granted power of attorney for a man suffering from dementia to his two children, and ordered his wife to turn over his money and assets to the children as well. She was, to put it mildly, displeased. Over a year ago, store employees at the drug store where she works had seen her follow the judge he was a frequent customer from the store into the parking lot, demanding that he rule in her favor.

Sometimes in farming country, in the fields between Bashaw and Clive, many things worth stealing are the things outdoors.
Pickup trucks, snowmobiles, 4X4s and tractors -- on a farm, that's capital; hard-earned cash. And if someone tries to steal them, some people say, farmers have a right to stop them, any way they can.
That's not a view shared by the RCMP.
On Friday, police charged a Clive-area farmer accused of what might be described as an alleged vigorous defence of his property.
Brian Knight, 38, chased a 4X4 thief off his land, rammed him into a ditch, then shot him as he tried to run, RCMP allege.
Out there, miles from the nearest police station, you have to help yourself, people say.

When people are taught that they must "control" others and they are given a monopoly of force, they eventually act like this cop, every time. (One might argue that people susceptible to this type of misconduct are drawn to these jobs. Tomato. Tomahto.) It is not about age, in my view. It's human nature. That the larger public doesn't rise up to meet this lunacy head-on is a result, I believe, of the systematic sheepification of the citizenry, which as we know now, is accomplished and maintained via public schooling. This sheepification was, in fact, one of the foundational tenets of that institution, the public school, at its inception and remains a large focus of its job. |

Concern that the Obama administration could impose a new ban on some semiautomatic weapons is driving worried gun owners to stockpile ammunition and cartridge reloading components at such a rate that manufacturers can't meet demand.
In Wyoming, the run on bullets and reloading components reached such a frenzy that Cheyenne retailer Frontier Arms recently began rationing sales, said Becky Holtz, co-owner of the shop. Holtz said she's also been selling semiautomatic rifles as fast as she can put them on the shelves.
"You know there's something wrong when I've got little old ladies coming in buying 5,000 rounds of .22 shells," Holtz said.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now the second member of President Obama's cabinet to get shot down by the White House over the politically sensitive issue of assault weapons. After meeting with Mexican President Felipe Caldern, Clinton said that reinstating the U.S. ban on assault weaponswhich was passed in 1994 and expired in 2004is one step this country could take to curb the flow of guns to Mexico's drug cartels. "These military-style weapons don't belong on anybody's street," Clinton told NBC. Within hours, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that he was unaware of "any plans" to push for such a baneven though Obama had backed one during last year's campaign.

It's as if the feds finally woke up and said, "Hey, we have ourselves a violence problem on the southern border."
However, the government has been somewhat less than helpful.
But along with the change in administration has come a new focus on border violence...
Hundreds of new agents and a slew of surveillance equipment will be sent to parts of the 2,000-mile border. Some of those agents will be used as anti-gun-trafficking agents.
This is where some care must be taken.
While it's good to have more agents trying to interdict the southward flow of weapons into Mexico, the knee-jerk response of tightening gun control must be avoided. |

Clinton's first mistake was in imagining she is still a Senator that can make pronouncements on pending laws and policy plans instead of a mere envoy of the president, a mouth piece that hasn't the same freedom to invent policy prescriptions and laws that a Senator does. Last week, Clinton told Mexican officials that "we" -- as in the U.S. government -- are considering re-upping the so-called assault rifle ban because Mexico's drug violence is "our" fault. When asked on March 27 about plans to return to the 1994 law banning "assault weapons" (a vague and illegitimate term at best), Obama's press secretary replied that he was unaware of "any plans" to reinstitute the ban. |

Boston T. Party, creator of Free State Wyoming and author of many books including Bostons Gun Bible, spoke at the New Hampshire Liberty Forum on the Heller decision and the future of the Second Amendment.
I am not optimistic, he said. While Heller said the right to keep and bear arms was an individual right, it also said that rights can be attenuated (that means infringed).
And having gained the power in Heller to determine who can get a handgun and who cant, victim disarmament advocates are going to move on to battle rifles and finally hunting rifles, he argued.

They [employees] could be bringing a gun, and under a bill moving through the Alabama Legislature there might be very little an employer can do to stop them.
Democratic lawmakers in the House and the Senate are sponsoring bills that would prohibit employers from establishing policies or rules that stop gun permit holders from keeping a gun locked in their car while they're at work.
Backed by the National Rifle Association, the bills would make it a Class A misdemeanor if an employer establishes, maintains or enforces such a policy. The NRA has been successful in getting similar legislation passed in nearly 10 states. Both the House and Senate versions have cleared committees in each chamber and await full debate. |

Each spring I am fortunate enough to guide spring turkey hunters from across the United States and Canada. I have watched spring turkey hunters come into camp with vests filled with calls and decoys, several high-dollar turkey guns and 'knowledge.' And each season these hunters miss their Chautauqua County spring longbeard. Years ago, Grandpa Robbins gave me a piece of advice that I still live by: sometimes you get the turkey, but generally the turkey gets you.' Choosing a firearm is a personal choice. Some folks make their choice based on money. While this is an important element in purchasing any piece of equipment, when it comes to a firearm it shouldn't be the most important part. |

The Feds are engaged in a sweeping series of measures to take complete control of the financial system (which is forever destroyed); ratchet up plans for perpetual war; socialize health care; further implant federalized education and take away all ability to homeschool; grab guns and ammo; remove children from the homes of dissenters; send protesters to FEMA camps; and on and on and on...
At this point, none of this can be undone - from war, to the Patriot Act, to the drug war, to the blighted monetary system, to Obama's takeover of private institutions. Rahm Emanuel, Eric Holder, and the other agents of Obama's unfreedom crusade were brought to Washington D.C. to do one thing: to centralize every last bit of life and put it all under federal rule, from money to education to personal behavior. |

...Let me ask you about something closer to home and that is Mexico. You talked about sending more aid to the Mexican government. But things down there are really serious, as you well know. It's my understanding that 90 percent of the guns that they're getting down in Mexico are coming from the United States. We don't seem to be doing a very good job of cutting off the gun flow. Do you need any kind of legislative help on that front? Have you, for example, thought about asking Congress to reinstate the ban on assault weapons? |

Although the idea of states' rights took hold in the run-up to the Civil War in order for the South to preserve, among other things, the institution of slavery, today's debates are really about whether there's any power left for the states to carve out of the Constitution.

The U.S. has over 30,000 gun deaths annually. That's far, far more per capita than any other modern country.
Roughly 55 percent of these gun deaths are suicides, 40 percent are homicides, 3 percent are accidental and not quite 2 percent are in the defense of people or property. That's about 2 percent of which the outcomes could be called favorable and 98 percent of which the outcomes could be called unfavorable.
Will more arms in more citizens' hands in more places change more homicides into successful self-defense? Perhaps so, at least in isolated circumstances. But imagine a threat unfolding in a crowded area, untrained responses, a quick-triggered shoot-out, bullets spraying, uncoordinated crossfire. |

Texas state senators did the right thing Wednesday by unanimously saying it's OK for people to bring weapons to their place of employment and store them in their parked vehicles.
Businesses would still have the ability to ban firearms off their premises and keep them out of company vehicles. But as long as the weapons remain securely locked up in the employees' vehicles, it would be lawful for them to have the firearms on company parking facilities.
Predictably, there's opposition to this legislation. |

Next year, Kansans will vote whether to change the state constitution to guarantee individual gun rights.
It is the law of the land today in every state. They (supporters) would like to make sure it stays that way in Kansas, said Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, an Independence Republican.
Supporters of a resolution that passed the House and Senate say the move is needed in case the U.S. Supreme Court ever decides that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun ownership. In 2008, the court ruled that the Bill of Rights covers an individuals right to own firearms. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
