It’s time to set a new precedent. For the past seven years Bush/Cheney and Co. have been doing an outstanding job trashing the US Constitution. That Military Commissions Act of 2006 was a real Neocon crowd-pleaser. However, it’s time for the State to take aim at another pillar of the Constitution. Coming under fire right now is the favorite target of the State, the Second Amendment. |

Consider the following situations if law-abiding citizens are prohibited from transporting guns in their cars onto business property:
1. A worker would be prohibited from stopping by a gun range for target practice on the way to or from work.
2. A worker would be prohibited from buying a gun on the way to work.
3. A worker would be prohibited from leaving on a weekend hunting trip after work. 4. A worker would be prohibited from carrying a firearm for self-defense to or from work. |

For the first time in nearly three-quarters of a century, the Supreme Court is addressing a key Second Amendment issue, involving the right of Americans to keep and bear arms.
It is indicative of the changing political climate in our country that the case at hand even reached the high court. At one time — say, 70 years ago — it would have been decided easily in a lower court.
At issue is the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns. In addition to prohibiting any D.C. resident from keeping a handgun, the law requires that rifles and shotguns must be stored disassembled or with trigger locks. |

According to the Framers of the Constitution, rights predate government. Accordingly, governments do not and cannot grant rights. They can merely enumerate, guarantee or deny rights to the individual.
States do not have rights. States have powers and responsibilities, certainly; but not rights. In reading the 10th Amendment, one notes that the Founders made a very clear distinction between “the States” and “the people.” |

"In Philadelphia, the police unit responsible for tracking guns is only now digging out of a 6,000-case backlog caused by inadequate staffing. The delays got so bad that judges sometimes dismissed cases because necessary lab work wasn't finished in time.
...
City legislators scream the loudest about the horrors of firearms and they can't be bothered to compel their police and district attorney to prosecute a backlog of 6,000 firearms cases?
And antigun groups don't understand why gun owners and the General Assembly won't stand for more new gun laws? |

The Supreme Court accepted the case of Heller vs. D.C. earlier this year. The case concerns whether or not the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1791, allows an individual to own a gun. This will be the first time that the Supreme Court may rule on whether an individual has the right to own guns. |

Two state representatives have informally asked Attorney General Larry Long to issue an opinion on the Board of Regents' ban on firearms on the six public university campuses.
State Rep. Tom Brunner, R-Nisland, believes that Long will respond and that the matter could be resolved this summer.
Brunner said that according to a 2006 law, no state agencies can make rules concerning the right to carry guns. He says the issue is whether the Board of Regents can ban guns on its campuses. |

In light of the recent increase in violence on campuses across the nation, campus security has become a hot topic in many college towns. Alabama Sen. Hank Erwin's solution to the problem was spelled out in a pair of bills he offered for consideration in the state legislative session starting Feb. 5, which called for state colleges and universities to allow professors and qualified students to carry concealed weapons. "The college campus has always been considered to be a bubble of security where students can come and grow into adulthood," Erwin said. "But Virginia Tech smashed that to smithereens. I say it's time to let the law-abiding students defend themselves." |

With school violence on the rise and campus shootings becoming increasingly more common, some states are rethinking their gun laws. Instead of putting more useless restrictions on guns, many of these states are looking into the possibility of allowing people with valid permits to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.
Arizona State Senate Bill 1214, for example, would allow permit-holders of at least 21 years of age to carry concealed firearms at K-12 schools, community colleges and universities. Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Idaho, and Washington all have similar concealed-carry legislation pending. |

To be clear, the amendment does not provide the "right" to overthrow the government. Such an act is always illegal. It does, however, provide the means to pursue that illegal act. As such, it has two effects. First, it serves as an additional, built-in, check-and-balance to our separation of powers in that tens of millions of households with weapons ensures against an oppressive government. That is, it provides a "chilling effect" on possible government abuse. |

A national conversation about guns — and where they can be carried — is escalating in light of recent college campus shootings and the U.S. Supreme Court's pending decision on gun rights.
It has filtered into Northeastern Wisconsin where a local gun dealer is pushing to allow college students to carry concealed handguns on campus, and an area official wants to remove the potential of a fine for someone who fires a gun in self-defense. |

COMPLETE ARTICLE: A massive fight between a group of teens wielding cinder blocks, bats and using Taser guns damaged several cars at a popular mall early Friday, according to police. Police arrested a 17-year-old at the scene but the others escaped. Witnesses told police that they didn't see anyone get seriously injured in the fight. |

Octavia "Tavia" Bowers felt like a prisoner in her home. A knee injury keeps the York woman from running or walking fast. If someone tried to attack her, she couldn't escape, she said. So she led a restricted life. And she was scared. "I don't go nowhere," Bowers said. "I go straight home from work and lock the doors. I feel like a prisoner." Now, she's emancipated. Eight days ago, Bowers completed an eight-hour class to qualify for a concealed weapons permit, allowing her to carry a handgun in a holster or purse. |

Heres what local officials have to say about the gun issue: U.S. REP. JASON ALTMIRE, D-4, McCANDLESS TWP. In Altmires opinion, the Second Amendment allows the right to bear arms, and Philadelphia, like Washington D.C., would be included in that same argument. Within the last month, Altmire and hundreds of other congressional leaders signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court supporting that fact, that the court should uphold the constitution and overturn the D.C.s ban on handguns. |

""The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
"If "people" above refers only to the militia, then "We The People" in the preamble of the Constitution, has to refer to the militia only.
"If you study the history of the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment, there were many reasons our forefathers wanted the people to have firearms. Some called it the keystone amendment, the one that protected all the other freedoms. First, if all the people have firearms common to the time, they can repel any aggressor. With our military stretched thin, and the border and terrorist problems, do you want to take a chance? ..." |

Rev. James D. McCathan of Duryee Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church says he's heard the crackle of gunfire in the driveway and on a nearby street corner. "They shoot all over the place; on Main Street and on State Street,' he said Sunday as he discussed the latest joint effort by local ministers and police to get guns off county streets. McCathan said the gun amnesty program idea grew out of meetings of ministers from different faiths who are tired of the gun violence and street crimes that have addled some parts of the Electric City. |

The duh factor in limiting corruption in any organization is laced throughout our Constitution, termed checks and balances. Regardless of your own personal views on whether people kill people or guns kill people the Second Amendment is one of these checks. This country was brought about by revolution: farmers and tradesmen rising up against a government that was taxing unfairly and, in general, oppressing them. The framers of the Constitution realized that this was an ongoing fact of humankind, which it addressed with the right to keep and bear arms and the encouragement to rise up and abolish your own government once it crossed the line from beneficial to thieving and corrupt. |

In a recent editorial, The News pays lip service to the Second Amendment (the right to keep and bear arms) and then advocates infringing the heck out of it. The amendment is the only one in the Bill of Rights that warns against infringement. Infringement is stronger than denied. Infringement means to trespass upon, to whittle away at until that right is effectively denied by sneak attack rather than frontal assault. |

The political action committee of the National Rifle Association spent more than $73,000 this week on mailings in support of Michael Gableman's campaign for Supreme Court. Gableman is challenging incumbent Supreme Court Justice Louis Butler in Tuesday's election. According to documents filed with the Government Accountability Board, the NRA Political Victory Fund spent more than $14,000 on postcards and more than $59,000 on postage on March 27. Because the expenditure was made on March 27, the cost was not recorded on the most recent campaign finance reports filed with the GAB; the cutoff for those filings was March 17. Gableman was endorsed March 25 by both the NRA Political Victory Fund and the Wisconsin Rifle and Pistol Association. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1. |
