Concealed carry licensing is becoming more popular with Oklahoma residents.
According to reports from Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), 8,799 self defense act licenses were approved in 2002. Five years later, OSBI issued 18,510 permits in 2008. Females licensed in the state last year numbered 4,237, while 14,273 men obtained their permits.
The bureau issued 16,426 permits in 2007, 9,591 in 2006 and 10,450 in 2005.
Sergeant Brent Crittenden of Pryor Police Department said he is getting a lot more calls from people interested in obtaining a concealed carry permit. He has been teaching the self-defense class for over five years. Crittenden said last year has been his busiest. |

Ammunition was running out so fast at a gun show late last year in Richmond that one man tried to grab a big can of .223-caliber bullets just as another guy was trying to pay for it.
There was an argument. One guys coming over his shoulder trying to grab his can of 500 rounds of ammo, recalled Josh Golden, a gun and ammo dealer who was selling items at the Richmond Gun Show that day on Nov. 15. They were his, and he was going to let him know that they were his.
In November, firearms transactions spiked about 60 percent over November 07 in Virginia, and theyre up so far this year, too, according to the number of state police background checks for firearm purchases. |

The Second Amendment Foundation has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against Attorney General Eric Holder, seeking an injunction against enforcement of a federal law that makes it impossible for American citizens who reside outside the United States to purchase firearms while they are in this country.
SAF is joined by two natural-born citizens, Maxwell Hodgkins and Stephen Dearth, who have been denied the opportunity to buy firearms because they do not currently reside in the United States. Hodgkins currently lives in the United Kingdom, and Dearth is a resident of Canada.

A bill awaiting Minnesota legislative action would legally protect people who use deadly force to defend themselves against criminals.
The proposal would rewrite laws regulating the use of deadly force in self-defense, extending protection to cars and businesses. Current law only protects victims while inside the home.
Currently, you would have to wait for the person to step to you and attack you and put you in fear of great bodily harm or witness him commit a felony in your presence before you could use deadly force, said the bill's author, Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder.

The suit, ... challenges a government requirement that forces gun buyers without a federal firearms license to fill out their state of residence on a special transaction form. It also targets a law that bar gun dealers from selling fire arms to non-U.S. residents for anything other than hunting or sports purposes.
...According to the complaint, the two individual plaintiffs have gun licenses from Arizona and Utah, but say they are unable to buy weapons while in the United States because they do not have a state of residence that they can use to fill out the required forms. They argue that the governments restrictions violate the Second Amendment and Fifth Amendment equal protection rights of U.S. citizens who live abroad. |

The guns-in-saloons bill has stalled in the state House tonight with lawmakers fighting over whether they should set a curfew for customers to surrender their weapons. The sponsor, Rep. Curry Todd, thinks handgun carriers should have to give up their guns at 11 p.m. "The NRA was OK with this," Todd told the House.
The House voted 62-29 to add the curfew to the bill. But many Republicans objected even to this restriction on Second Amendment rights, and Rep. Brian Kelsey then offered an amendment to strip the provision. After Todd could muster only 32 votes to table that amendment, he withdrew the bill from the floor. He said he'd try again next Monday. |

During a segment on Fridays Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull program, CNN tried to perpetuate left-wing stereotypes about gun owners, and sent mixed messages about whether or not President Obama and his administration is pushing for gun control.
Besides interviewing the lawyer and the nurse, he visited a local gun store, where he skeptically asked one of the employees of the store, Why would someone own a semiautomatic weapon like this? I mean, is saying its my right, is that enough?

Attacks on the Second Amendment may have fallen out of fashion - even Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco will not bring up reviving that old assault weapons ban - but bless its heart, the New York Times is still plugging away at it.
Times editorial writers seized on the slaughter of 11 people in Alabama by a gunman earlier this month.
"In spraying bullets from military-style, semiautomatic assault rifles, a deranged 28-year-old gunman in Alabama this week killed 10 people and wounded six others before fatally shooting himself. |

(AP)AUSTIN, TexasJohn Woods sometimes sits in a classroom at the University of Texas and wonders what would happen if somebody walked in and started shooting.
The House version of the bill, sponsored by Rep. Joe Driver, a Garland Republican, is scheduled for a public hearing Monday in the Public Safety Committee.
Supporters say the bills would do two things: protect the rights of those licensed to carry concealed weapons, and help prevent another massacre on the scale of what happened at Virginia Tech and another shooting last year at Northern Illinois University.

CHICAGO - An influential government-appointed medical panel is urging doctors to routinely screen all American teens for depression a bold step that acknowledges that nearly 2 million teens are affected by this debilitating condition. --- Then, when they get old enough to buy a gun they can be instantly denied. Based on their recent lobbying activities, I would expect NRA to go along with this.

A renewed battle over the publics right to access permits to carry concealed weapons is playing out in both chambers of the West Virginia Legislature this week.
A vote is planned at mid-week in the Senate on SB378 that is designed basically as a reciprocity pact, one that allows West Virginia and other states to recognize each others concealed permits when residents travel to and from one another.
Attached to that proposal, however, is a controversial provision that says the public has no right to pry into government records through a Freedom of Information Act request to see just who is allowed to pack a hidden firearm in public. |

The two sides have not been able to reach any middle ground and are not likely to do so. Each is entrenched in its views. Gun owners see every new law or regulation as an incursion on their rights. Gun-control advocates see new laws as making us more safe.
The decisions will be made in the Congress. And each side will make its arguments.
In the meantime, there is nothing to prevent people from legally stocking up on guns and ammunition.
Ed.: While Congress may make some decisions, I suspect the final decisions will be made from rooftops, tree lines and trenches. |

HB1623 The Concealed Carry Privacy bill is scheduled to be on the agenda of the Senate Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs tomorrow, again!
This time we should be at the very front of the line since the committee adjourned right in the middle of testimony last week because the Senate was convening.
David Bailey, Managing Editor of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette and member of the Arkansas Press Association (APA) is lobbying heavily against the bill. No word yet on what effect the Governor's recent stance might play. The Governor's office can be reached here, at 501-682-2345. Repectfully urge him to support this bill.
I'll be "twittering" the hearing so if you follow us on Twitter check it out around

Police have yet to determine how Lovelle Mixon, a parolee with a lengthy criminal record, got his hands on the handgun and the SKS rifle he used to kill four Oakland police officers...just over a week ago. But the horror of the slayings drives home the need to enforce and enhance gun-control laws throughout the nation... Congress must bring back the national ban on 19 types of military-style weapons it enacted in 1994, with the leadership of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, but allowed to expire...
The inexpensive SKS is a semi-automatic carbine designed in the Soviet Union...it is not classified as an assault weapon. No, the ban would not have prevented this massacre and will not absolutely prevent others like it in the future. |

The state legislature is on the verge of passing a series of bills this year that would greatly expand the number of places where people who hold licenses to carry loaded handguns can take their weapons. Democratic leadership in the General Assembly had stymied such efforts for years, but that has changed with Republicans now holding a slim majority.
Taken together, the measures would be the biggest liberalization of the state's gun laws since the passage of the carry permit law 15 years ago. It also could be a major step toward an even greater loosening of the restrictions on handgun owners, activists on both sides of the issue say...Gun-rights advocates say the measures, are long overdue corrections to the state's firearm laws |

The House of Representatives passed a measure Wednesday that supporters are calling the most sweeping reform of nationally-backed volunteer programs since AmeriCorps. But some opponents are strongly criticizing the legislation, calling it expensive indoctrination and forced advocacy.
The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act -- sponsored by Reps. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y, and George Miller, D-Calif. -- was approved by a 321-105 vote and now goes to the Senate. --- Note that it has now been passed by the Senate, also.
Will these volunteers be expected to snitch on gun owners during "national emergencies" like hurricane Katrina?

Reading "The Modern Militia Movement," the document from the Missouri Information Analysis Center that conflates constitutionalists with Neo-Nazis, I was reminded of a scene in The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. When poor Henry Davids civil disobedience finally lands him behind bars, Ralph Waldo Emerson ruefully asks, "Henry!... What are you doing in jail?" To which Thoreau famously responds, "Waldo! What are you doing out of jail?"
Likewise, if your beliefs arent libeled in MIACs risible report well, Waldo, why not? Those of the Founding Fathers certainly are.

WASHINGTON (AP) - When Democrats acted last month to give the District of Columbia long-denied voting rights in Congress, the powerful gun lobby saw a target too good not to take a shot at. The National Rifle Association's lobbyists made it clear to lawmakers that they believed the bill should include a measure to overturn the capital's gun control laws. Left mostly unsaid, but well understood by all 535 members of the House and Senate, was that failure to do so would unleash a barrage of political pain on resisters. The result showed the strong sway the NRA has even over a Congress dominated by liberal Democrats who mostly disagree with the organization's positions. The Senate voted overwhelmingly to add the gun-rights proposal... |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States before the Adoption of the Constitution [Boston, 1833]. |
