To Keep and Bear Arms

... "I wish the Supreme Court would do more than rule the Second Amendment applies to the states. Its long past time the last, ridiculous cobwebs of ambiguity were cleared away from the right to keep and bear arms. ... We have better things to do than slip into another bitter, tedious argument about whether the government can interfere with our right, and duty, to defend ourselves."

"The notion that citizens have no good reason to be armed, because the State can protect them from violent crime, is one of the most dangerous lies Big Government has fed its subjects. The government reduces crime through the police and court systems, but no matter how tirelessly the police work, there is very little chance they can actively defend you from assault. ..." ...

"With regard to McDonald v. Chicago now before the Supreme Court of the United States, the issue has been framed as one of reasonableness, as if it is fair and reasonable to regulate guns out of existence as long as the law allows people to have one gun left. This is the State's definition of not taking our guns. This is the State's definition of reasonableness. This is the State's definition in a nation of self-rule." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

THE CONTROVERSY: Recently, some gun owners have staged a campaign of walking into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. Gun control advocates have protested.

STARBUCKS' STANCE: Starbucks ( SBUX - news - people ) says it complies with state laws and won't ban guns from stores in states where there is an open-carry law.

RESPONSE: The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is holding a press conference in Starbucks' hometown of Seattle about its petition demanding that Starbucks declare its cafes "gun-free zones."

"It's hard to argue with a man like Otis McDonald, the Chicago grandfather who wants to end the city's ban on handguns." ...

"The handgun ban gives the advantage to criminals, McDonald argues. Allow good people to own guns, and the playing field will be leveled." ...

"With the gun control landscape upended by the 2008 Supreme Court decision, no one knows what gun restrictions are constitutional anymore. ..."

"... (W)e urge the City Council to act boldly, as D.C. did. ..."

KABA Note: I wonder if the editors even noticed that they switched horses midstream there. McDonald was about handgun possession, but the editors suddenly start talking about "the court's apparent willingness to allow for some restrictions on gun use". So I guess to the antis, there is no difference between ownership and misuse.

Chicago the [SAF]'s challenge to the Windy Citys decades-old handgun ban may put one 'behind the herd' or give one time to carefully read the court transcripts and see what others have said in a rush to be first."

"The easy analysis that would probably get lots of support from the gun rights community would be that SAF attorney Alan Gura and Paul Clement, representing the [NRA], both hit their arguments out of the park. "But the fad never really caught fire ... The Second Amendment may kill such restrictions, but in most places, it wasn't needed to keep them from hatching in the first place."

Economist Carl Moody ... found that after the ban was put into place, violence immediately rose and the city is now more dangerous than before, relative to 24 of the largest American cities.

"The transcript of yesterday's Supreme Court hearing of McDonald v. Chicago (No. 08-1521) depicts a Court with clear predispositions about which arguments it will or will not accept. Most observers believe the Court will vote to 'incorporate' the Second Amendment, meaning it will apply to states as well as the federal government."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962
