"Gun control groups not only want Congress to pass an extension of the 1994 'assault weapons' ban -- they also want the ban to be 'strengthened.' "
"They said they are heartened by this week's gun control votes in the U.S. Senate." ...
"Such weapons are perfectly legal under the so-called 'assault weapons' ban. But the Violence Policy Center accuses the gun industry of evading the intent of Congress by 'making minor cosmetic changes and producing 'clones' and 'knock-off' versions to continue to sell for profit at the expense of public safety.' "
------- Gee, maybe it's because the ban banned minor cosmetic features on firearms which were barely ever used in crimes. |

"But in politics, winners and losers are not always who they seem to be, and if it looked as though Democrats emerged victorious from the topsy-turvy voting, Republicans on Wednesday were hardly conceding defeat. "I was disappointed to read the editorial 'Congress must tighten gun control laws' (CT, Mar. 3), in which support was voiced for renewing the assault weapons ban and closing the 'gun show loophole.' While the bill in question was dropped from the agenda by Congress, these issues will be raised at another time and readers of the Collegiate Times should know the truth about them."
"Both of these measures are intended to feed off public ignorance and fear about the actual situations they address. The assault weapons ban was passed in 1994 and has done nothing to make the public more safe." |

The teenager accused of slaying a student who was an innocent bystander outside Anacostia High School back in October says he fired the shots in self-defense.
At his trial Thursday in D.C. Superior Court, the 15 year old testified he started shooting after spotting several people in a Cadillac outside the school - believing that they had threatened him with a gun just days before.
The teen says one of the car's occupants put his arm out the window like he was going to fire. The teen says that prompted him to pull out his own gun and begin chasing the vehicle up the street. ---

An Argentine mayor is so fed up with crimes on his patch he has told farmers to go ahead and gun thieves down in cold blood. "I endorse killing criminals on your farmland, I endorse it," said Jorge Simoni, mayor of the municipality of Villarino in southern Argentina.
"The life of the guy who gets up at 5 a.m. to produce, to work, comes first," he said in a television interview aired on Thursday. "There will be a thousand reasons why people go out and steal, but I don't excuse them."

Argentina's police say poor budgets and wages are taking their toll on fighting crime, but the government is seeking to improve policing.

"A powerful pair is teaming up against Minnesota's new handgun permit law, leading a group called 'Repeal Conceal.' "
"Former Vice President Walter Mondale and former Governor Arne Carlson say the law is bad public policy."
"The law took most discretion away from local police, saying permits most be issued to most-law-abiding, mentally competent adults who have taken a gun safety class."
"In the past, applicants had to show an occupational need or a threat to their safety."
"Mondale says the law provides only an illusion of greater safety for those who carry handguns, and a higher level of anxiety for many others."
------- Notice he says "anxiety", which is a perception, and nothing about safety which is reality.
The reality is that citizens do not need to demonstrate a "need" in order to exercise their constitutional rights.
Reality is that there have been no shootouts and no blood in the streets, like the hanky wringers have been predicting, since concealed carry laws took effect.
So essentially, these two statists are working to violate citizens' Second Amendment rights for absolutely no good reason. |

The trial of a Montreal police officer accused of shoplifting from a suburban supermarket should be discontinued, his lawyer told a Quebec Court judge yesterday. The trial of Guy Marleau, 39, began on Monday, when the court heard that on April 10, 2002, he left a store without paying for $191 in groceries. Store manager Robert Laporte testified that when he approached Mr. Marleau in the parking lot, the police officer said he was "testing" the supermarket's security system. Instead of producing a sales receipt for the items, Mr. Marleau showed his badge. Police had been called, and when patrolman Serge Marcotte arrived, he recognized his colleague. In a search, Mr. Marcotte found Mr. Marleau's loaded service revolver. He was off duty at the time and not authorized to be carrying his gun. The 13-year veteran has been suspended without pay since his arrest.

Well, it's been almost a year since the passage of the concealed-carry law, and the sky hasn't fallen. There haven't been any road-rage shootings or Wild West shootouts like the doom-and-gloom crowd predicted.

"The Feb. 13 Point of View column by Dr. Greg Bachhuber -- 'Concealed-carry laws place guns into hands of unskilled people' -- (and your newspaper's editorial as well) contains all the misinformation and mistrust that every opponent of concealed-carry believe. The problem is it just isn't true." ...
"The vast majority of individuals getting their concealed-carry permit have years of experience with firearms. The point is that they are taking responsibility for their own self-defense, and with it comes a tremendous responsibility to know how to handle the firearm correctly as well as when it is wise to use it." ...
"Yet should we as a society decide that they should be disarmed and risk not being able to defend themselves? To attempt to compare the training police get in the use of deadly force and that of a civilian is like comparing apples and oranges. The police have a duty to carry their firearms and protect the public (and, incidentally, such protection does not extend to any individual but to the community as a whole, as has been upheld several times by the U.S. Supreme Court)."
"Police should be held to a much higher standard concerning defensive shootings, yet routinely are not. Police are given three days of administrative leave before being interviewed about the events. I can promise that if a civilian is involved in a defensive shooting, they will not get three days to settle their nerves and collect their thoughts. They will be grilled for hours and will most likely end up behind bars for at least a short time." |
