Politicians say one thing and do another. They give us their best smile as they claim that up is down. A skeptical press is supposed to ask tough questions and see through the politician's spin.

Since the mainstream press won't do it, it is up to us to separate the grain of truth from the flood of political spin. Here are a few examples of the work the news media failed to do.

Gun rights advocates turned out in force Wednesday to testify in favor of a bill that they said will clarify a person's right to defend themselves from assailants who enter their home, workplace or vehicle.

Right now, they said, Nebraska law requires someone to retreat from a violent confrontation, if they can safely, before using deadly force. It makes someone who uses a firearm to protect themselves "guilty until proven innocent," supporters of gun rights maintain.

The House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee passed House Bill 477 by a voice vote to create a new lifetime carry permit option for state residents. Unfortunately, Rep. Harry Shiver (R-64) made an amendment to increase the cost from $200 to $500. This is an attempt by the sheriffs to either kill the bill, or if it passes, to impose an exorbitant cost that most Alabamians cannot afford.

We need your help immediately! Please contact your state representative and insist that they table the committee amendments by Rep. Farley and Rep. Shiver on the floor.

Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., are joining with 43 senators in reintroducing legislation that would expand federal background checks to all gun sales.

Our country needs airtight background checks, without any loopholes, Wyden said. Thoughts and prayers wont stop unlicensed sellers from selling firearms online or at gun shows to people whose actions demonstrate they should not own a gun. Congress must take common-sense action to reduce the chances for these tragedies to strike.

Reeves bill would scrap a state law in effect since 1863 that lets private citizens arrest someone who commits a crime in their presence or during an escape attempt, while still permitting off-duty police officers and business owners to detain those believed to have committed a crime on their property.

The changes would not affect Georgias self-defense and stand-your-ground laws, which require different legal standards for people to use reasonable force to protect themselves than the broad leeway to detain under the current citizens arrest law, Reeves said.

House Bill 1106 imposes government-mandated standards for storing firearms, rendering a persons firearm useless when needed for self-defense. This should be a matter of personal responsibility, as everyones situation is different.

Again, please contact your State Representative and ask them to OPPOSE House Bill 1106.

Missouri bus riders and other public transportation users could bring guns with them under a bill advancing in the state House.

The Republican-led chamber gave the proposal initial approval in a voice vote Wednesday.

Currently, firearms and other dangerous weapons are not allowed on public transit.

The pending bill would allow people with concealed carry permits to bring guns on publicly funded transportation, which includes the Kansas City Streetcar and St. Louis buses. The bill wouldnt allow guns on Amtrak trains.

The bill is is measure that, if passed, would be expressing the consensus of the Florida Legislature that proposals forthcoming at the federal level to restrict the right to keep and bear arms violate the Constitution of the United States and affirming the intent of the Florida Legislature to do everything in its power to protect the rights of Florida residents under both the Second Amendment and the Florida Constitution.

U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) joined 43 Senators, led by Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), in introducing the Background Check Expansion Act to expand federal background checks to all gun sales, according to a press release from Padilla's office. Under current federal law, unlicensed or private sellers are not required to conduct a background check prior to transferring a firearm. 97 percent of Americans support comprehensive background checks. Research indicates that as many as a quarter of all gun sales in the United States may occur without a background check. U.S. Representative Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) introduced the companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Weve been there before: Far-Leftist Democrats try to foist extreme unconstitutional gun control that was actually drafted in the offices of gun-hating lobbyists.

But, rather than call out this legislative garbage for what it is, Republicans have sometimes foolishly thought they could clean it up.

The result is always the same:  Every tiny concession we get in exchange for a massive gun control victory becomes a new battlefield on the day that the gun control bill is signed into law.

Its up to the person whos ordered the surrender to admit how many guns and rounds of ammo they own. A victim can testify to the number of weapons in the home. Prosecutors have told us that sometimes they use social media to get this information. The guns are stored by the sheriffs offices. Some counties allow the sale of guns or transfer to a third party. The guns are returned upon the expiration of the protective order.

A judge in one county that has a process of surrender told KHOU 11 that while the county may have a program in place to follow up on the gun possession prohibition outlined in protective orders, not every judge orders the surrender.

Opponents of the bill, HB 1212, say this would allow any person to kill anyone anywhere if they believe they are stopping a forcible felony, defined as any felony that involves the use or the threat of physical force or violence against a person. This justification of force would also apply to defense of property, which includes trespass and criminal interference with property, such as cases of car theft or vandalization.

Proposed by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, House Bill 2058 seeks to recognize all out-of-state concealed carry permits, and allow those who have been licensed to carry a firearm for self-defense, to do so lawfully in Kansas. This legislation recognizes that visitors to Kansas should not be left defenseless simply by crossing a state line. As amended, HB 2058 allows individuals who are 18 to 20 years of age to apply for a Kansas concealed carry permit, and also authorizes the attorney general to issue an alternative license to carry a concealed handgun to qualified applicants during a declared state of disaster emergency.

A man is dead following a shooting in Daphne. Police say the domestic incident happened at the Ashley Gates Apartments on Van Avenue about 11 p.m. Wednesday night. Police say its a case of a new boyfriend shooting and killing the ex-husband, and it appears to be a "Stand Your Ground" case.

In Alabama, you can stand your ground anywhere, even on a sidewalk. Police say Tony Jeffrey Vincent, a 32-year-old father from Grand Bay, died in the gun exchange. Police say he fired an AR-15 rifle and broke down his ex-wifes door before being shot to death.
