But the president of the local Fraternal Order of Police said he finds the bill unacceptable. --- I find 2 fatal shootings (one by a cop who got punched) unacceptable! |

Chicago native and Boston Celtics star Antoine Walker might have wished he had a weapon when he was robbed at gunpoint in Chicago during the summer of 2000. Walker was robbed of a $55,000 watch.
'Society itself can be so rude and so cold that everybody has to protect himself,' Rose said. 'It's really a sad state for society moreso than for the individual.' |

A bill that would have required a judge's approval to use facial-recognition software was shelved yesterday by a Senate panel, leaving localities unchecked in implementing the technology.
...the databases used to identify felons and criminals have expanded to such a degree that police could conceivably do full background checks on every face that comes before a camera linked to the facial-recognition software. |

There are some facts that the liberal media doesn't like for ordinary citizens to know. For example, guns are used over 7,000 times every day to prevent crimes in this country. In 98% of these cases, the gun is never even discharged. Simply brandishing the weapon will cause most cowards to run like little rabbits. In the majority of the 2% of cases in which a gun is fired, there are only warning shots taken to either frighten the attacker away or convince him to wait for the police. |

Amid the fishing gear that adorns his office walls, Ohio University journalism Professor Patrick Washburn reserved a spot for a piece of family history. For 15 years, Washburn displayed his great-grandfather's rifle.
But someone complained, and in January, O.U. police ordered him to remove the rifle. University officials say the school's workplace "violence policy" forbids the display.
"It's been up all these years," Washburn said last week. "Why do they suddenly care?" |

By the time an orange dawn had broken over the open prairie on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Sen. John C. Astle had already spent an hour in the frosty grass with his buddy Ladd Johnson, scanning the wispy clouds for any hint of a Canada goose.
With the morning chill sinking in, Astle and Johnson crouched into a cramped wooden blind, camouflaged by a field of soft yellow grain, and got to jawing about politics. |

"Somehow, in the last 40 years the entire concept of free speech has been completely inverted. The closer a person or group gets to doing precisely what the First Amendment was intended to protect, the more likely it is that the government will regulate or ban it. Conversely, the further out we get, the more likely it is that "Free Speech" will be an indispensable iron law of liberty, unbreakable without bringing the edifice of liberty down in rubble." - Jonah Goldberg |

Britain once prided itself as the nation that gave world its first official police force -- putting 'bobbies on the beat' to patrol the streets, keep order and help those in trouble. Now police fight a daily battle with muggers, killers and thieves. It is a battle they are losing.
In a telling sign of how crime now rules, police have decided to scrap the traditional yellow placards once placed at the scene of a robbery or hit-and-run to appeal for witnesses. |

Tucson, viewed as perhaps Arizona's most liberal city, has become a key battleground between gun enthusiasts and those who want more gun control. It was here where a state law preventing cities and towns from enacting virtually any gun ordinance was born.
That shouldn't be surprising, given that the Old Pueblo is home to some of the most outspoken and influential gun-rights activists in the state and nation. |

"Ridge's and Mineta's opposition makes it unlikely that the Bush administration will permit guns in cockpits... White House officials say Ridge's view reflects the thinking of President Bush, who has not commented publicly on the issue." --- Make sure you read that quote above. It clearly looks like officials in the executive department are working to subvert the "armed pilots" language that was signed into law thanks to your hard work last year. |

IT is rapidly becoming the must-have accessory for would-be gangsters all over Britain. The Brocock ME 38 Magnum air pistol normally fires pellets using compressed air cartridges.
However, with a modicum of expertise, a couple of hours and a metal insert it can be be converted to fire live rounds. The National Criminal Intelligence Service says the weapon accounts for more than half of all firearms recovered in London. |

An amendment to House Bill 1147, however, would allow county sheriffs to reveal the identities of some permit holders if they notified the individuals by registered mail or in person. Sheriffs would have to wait 10 days after mailing the letters to release the names. |

Seven Nassau gun owners have filed suit against the county, charging that Nassau legislators imposed an illegal tax when they voted two years ago to increase pistol permit fees to $200 from $25.
The lawsuit, funded by the National Rifle Association on behalf of about 39,000 Nassau pistol permit holders, was filed in State Supreme Court in Mineola two weeks ago and asks that the 700 percent fee increase approved by the legislature in June 2000 be thrown out. |

Authorities said four or five young black men followed Ruiz into his garage and demanded he open his bedroom safe.
"That would indicate to us that they at least were aware that the homeowner did have money in his home. Whether they knew the homeowner, we don't know at this point," police spokesman Doug Ridenour said.
Police said when the suspects left the home with the stolen items, Ruiz came after them with a handgun. A gun battle followed and Ruiz died at the scene. |

"I read with some amusement the letter depicting what might happen should guns be allowed in church. The problem is that stories like this mask the true issue here.
When legislators wish to change concealed weapons laws to allow "guns in church," most are not envisioning a congregation full of people "packing heat." The purpose is to allow ministers who happen to be living on church premises to have guns in their house or on their person." |
