"What happened this week in the U.S. Senate was predictable."
"Senate Democrats loaded up the gun makers' protection act with several anti-gun amendments, forcing all sides to vote the bill down. Pro-gun lawmakers didn't want the gun restrictions to pass, while the anti-gun zealots didn't like the underlying bill because they want the frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers to continue." ...
"Senators Had Been Warned -- As far back as six months ago, Gun Owners of America had been warning Senate personnel that what happened this week in the U.S. Senate could easily happen, and we had laid out the necessary steps to make sure it didn't happen." ... |

Thirteenth brief on the page:
FULL TEXT BELOW:
A pro-Second Amendment group is blaming the Senate leadership in general, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist in particular, for the "legislative donnybrook" that killed a bill aimed at protecting the gun industry from politically motivated lawsuits. Gun Owners of America called the defeat of the bill a "humiliating loss" that didn't need to happen. GOA said it worked hard with the Senate Republican leadership to insure that "killer amendments" would not be added to the bill - but in the end, they were. Those gun control amendments included an extension of the "assault weapons" ban, new restrictions on sales at gun shows, and gun lock requirements. "The death of the gun makers' protection bill was the tragic price we paid for an inexperienced Senate leadership that failed to understand and use the Senate rules," said GOA Communications Director Erich Pratt. He accused Senate Republican leaders of using a procedure favored by Senate Democrats - a procedure that was destined to fail, Pratt said. |

"Before the vote, minority Democrats managed to attract enough Republican support to add two key amendments to the bill that would protect gun dealers who place firearms into the hands of criminals. One amendment extends the ban on semiautomatic weapons. The other closes the so-called 'gun-show loophole' that exempts gun buyers and sellers from the Brady Laws background checks."
"Neither of these amendments is particularly controversial. The assault weapons ban has been in effect for a decade during which crime rates have dropped. The gun- show loophole is an inexcusable gap in the protection provided by the Brady Law, which already has prevented thousands of felons from buying firearms."
------- Note: these proposals WERE controversial, because they foisted yet more gun control on American citizens. The gun show "loophole" does not exist. If it did, more criminals (not just the paltry fewer than two percent) would be taking advantage of it.
The AW ban - an unconstitutional and worthless piece of legislation - is due to sunset this year, and it has done nothing to lower crimes, since only about two percent of criminals use so-called "assault" weapons in crimes to begin with. |

"I was shocked to see 'our' candidate's picture in the NY Times with Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein this morning, and I'll bet that the RNC, NRA, and the whole Bush team is delighted."
"Now, in addition to some 4,000,000 fundamentalist wingnuts the Republicans can count on another 4,000,000 NRA votes, placing Kerry in essentially the same position that Al Gore occupied in Y2K. All because of one lousy snapshot. His Senate vote is understandable and, considering how the gun manufacturers' protections bill had been poisoned, it was a reasonable one, but how could Kerry have been so stupid as to associate himself with the lunatic fringe of 'gun-melter-downers?' "

"...Then they took up some gun bills."
One would restrict the state Department of Environmental Protection's ability to sue ground-polluting gun ranges for failing to clean up lead discharge from spent rounds. The other would bar police departments from keeping lists of most guns bought from pawn shops and second-hand dealers. When did we miss the public clamor for quick action on these two issues?"
"Truth is, there is no such clamor. The only push to ease already lenient state gun laws comes from the Florida National Rifle Association chapter. Easy to see who comes first with this Legislature: special interests."
"Neither bill serves the public good. Lead-pollution is a health risk to humans and a killer of wildlife. Maybe the contaminants from gun ranges add up to a small risk, but that doesn't mean owners should get a free pass from regulation." |

"The Senate renewed the historic 1994 ban on assault rifles by a thin margin of 52 for to 47 against." -- No they didn't. They voted to attach the AW ban to the gun industry lawsuit protection bill.
"It seems ironic that an organization that promotes education and safe use of guns cannot see that the banned firearms are different in many areas that can make them significantly more dangerous that a common hunting rifle. ..." -- And it really is expected that an ignorant, pseudo journalistic hack would think that a flash suppressor or bayonet lug would make a weapon more dangerous.
"Some of the different components of banned weapons make them significantly more lethal. Those components include, pistol grips on rifles and shotguns, facilitating shooting from the waist, stalks that are foldable for concealment, and threaded barrels designed for silencers. Does anyone else feel a little uncomfortable with the thought of a rack of silencers and other tools of human assignation being sold next to ping-pong tables in Wal-Mart sporting goods?" -- Only panty-wetting ignorants, whose only firearms education comes from the VPC and the Brady Bunch.

The teenager accused of slaying a student who was an innocent bystander outside Anacostia High School back in October says he fired the shots in self-defense.
At his trial Thursday in D.C. Superior Court, the 15 year old testified he started shooting after spotting several people in a Cadillac outside the school - believing that they had threatened him with a gun just days before.
The teen says one of the car's occupants put his arm out the window like he was going to fire. The teen says that prompted him to pull out his own gun and begin chasing the vehicle up the street.
None of the car's occupants was hit in the shooting - but a bullet did kill 16 year old football player Devin Fowlkes.
The name of the teenager accused in the shooting isn't being released because he's charged as a juvenile. If found guilty, he could be locked up until turning 21.

"Columbia High students returned from a weeklong February break last week to find some new measures already in place. Most doors other than the main entrance have been equipped with alarms."

"One month later, the Dayton Daily News has finally published one of the letters they received in response to Mary McCarty's fear-mongering diatribe about Ohio's new concealed handgun law." ...
"Passing a concealed-carry law does not mean more dangerous people will carry guns. That number won't change. What will change is that safe people will have the legal right to carry, if they so choose."
"There are dangerous people who carry firearms every day now. Bad guys will not go through training and background checks to obtain a permit from the state. They simply will carry illegally."

"The City Council has banned anyone from carrying firearms into city buildings unless they are specifically authorized to do so."
"The new ordinance, passed unanimously Thursday, is designed to keep both openly carried and concealed weapons -- even in cases where the owner has a permit -- out of city buildings."
" 'There are a lot of kooks out there,' said Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks, who introduced the ordinance. 'This is very, very serious.' "
------- That's right, Mr. Brooks. The Constitution is very serious. Your violation of the people's rights is very serious. These are the same people who give statists like you your governing powers. It's repugnant for you to ban them from freely exercising their rights in buildings paid for with their taxes, to protect your cowardly, paranoid rear end from a nonexistent threat. |

"Beginning in September, the gun industry can resume making, importing and selling military-style semiautomatic weapons that were outlawed a decade ago. And in a hard-to-understand flip-flop, U.S. Sen, Russ Feingold, D-Wis., stood apart from President Bush and a majority of Feingold's Senate colleagues of both parties by voting to dump the ban on these weapons." ...
"However, don't expect law enforcement officers to agree with "Gun World's" assessment of the wonderful world of assault weapons. In a four-year period, one in five police officers killed in the line of duty was shot to death by an assault weapon, says the Violence Policy Center. ..."
------- Of course the VPC doesn't mention that the Uniform Crime Reports from which they gleaned their misleading statistics do not differentiate between regular rifles and the "assault" rifles that make gun banners quake in their boots. Ergo, it is misleading to use the "one in five" law enforcement officers statistic to justify renewal of this unconstitutional ban. |

A GOP Fla. State Senator wants to charge a tax on CCW permit holders, armed guards, and firearms instructors to help offset costs for cleanup of lead contaminated groundwater from gun ranges.
Why is it these so-called "conservatives" want to penalize folks exercising their constitutional right to bear arms? They tax all property owners to fund government schools, even though many taxpayers do not use them; gun range cleanup should be funded in like manner. After all, gun owners provide an important public service, certainly more important and effective than the failed public schools.
No, I'm NOT advocating an increase in the property tax, in fact I'd like to see it go away, along with foolish govt. officials and unconstitutional laws. |

"A gun-wielding robber got his comeuppance from one of his victims last night - a federal agent who gunned him down during a robbery attempt on the Lower East Side, cops said."
"The unidentified agent was confronted by the robber on the first floor of an Avenue D building around 11:30 p.m."
"It was unclear how the drama unfolded, but it ended with the assailant getting shot a number of times."
------- Note, however, that had this been a regular, disarmed New York citizen, not one of the elite class granted the privilege of exercising their rights, he would have likely been forced to give up his property and likely physically harmed as well. |

"Three U.S. Muslims face life in prison after being convicted on charges that they used paintball games to train for religious war against Americans and traveled abroad to hone their fighting skills. Defendants said the games were merely a form of recreation and aided them in preparing to protect their families." ...

------- Let's hope that overwhelming evidence used to convict them was something other than mere paintball games. Could this strategy be used against Second Amendment advocates? |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. Ronald Reagan |
