Utah gun control advocates are calling on Gov. Spencer Cox to veto legislation which would provide incentives to Beehive State teachers to volunteer for a program under which they could be armed in school as a defensive line against school shootings.
Perhaps not surprisingly, press reports identify anti-gunners as gun violence prevention advocates who assert HB119, sponsored by state Rep. Tim Jimenez (R-Tooele), could place children in harms way because it provides training to volunteer armed teachers. Jimenez, who moved to Utah from Washington state 16 years ago, told Ammoland News earlier this year his intention is to make schools safer.

Constitutional carry initially passed in the House last session then passed in the Senate earlier this year. But On February 5, 2024, Breitbart News reported the legislation had ground to a halt due to amendments added while the bill passed through the Senate. |

An interesting summary of the historical background to this pending Supreme Court case (in which I'm Counsel of Record, and which the ACLU's Legal Director, David Cole, will be arguing on March 18), by the ACLU's Jennesa Calvo-Friedman: More than 60 years ago the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment bars the government from coercing private entities to punish speech that the government disfavors. Just as the government can't directly punish or censor speech it disagrees with, it cannot do so indirectly by coercing private parties to do the same. |

Today, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) announced the filing of a motion for summary judgment in its lawsuit challenging New York Citys ban on electronic arms, such as stun guns and tasers. The motion in Calce v. NYC can be viewed at FPCLegal.org.
While the fate of the challenged laws is clear enough based on the foregoing analysis, it is worth noting the chorus of courtsat least three state appellate courts and two United States District Courtsthat have struck down stun gun bans based on Heller alone, argues the motion. |

Many Americans have resigned to the ubiquitous tracking of their daily movements and actions, whether its their daily step count, the route they take to work, or their internet browsing habits. It seems a small price to pay for the value our smartphones and other devices provide us. Technological advancements have made data a prized possession for companies to understand their customers better and, at times, for the government to monitor its citizens. |

Litigators representing Mexico in two cases against various aspects of the gun trade say they could have broad implications for similar legal action in the future.
Mexico first filed suit against major gun makers which it alleges design, market and sell weapons in ways that arm cartels and fuel violence. A second suit against five Arizona gun stores argues that they systematically participate in trafficking firearms across the border.
Alejandro Celorio Alcntara legal counsel for Mexicos foreign ministry, says gun violence there began ramping up in 2005 after a law called the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, which banned assault weapons, expired. |
