"HB 1729, the NRA-backed Right to Carry bill, has moved out of committee and will now go before the full House for a vote. Call your Representative at (573) 751-3659 and urge him to support HB 1729."
"Also, HB 1344, the bill legalizing concealed weapons in motor vehicles, was combined with a bill authorizing Project Exile. The bill will now contain both the NRA program to get violent felons off the streets and the will allow citizens to legally carry concealable firearms in their cars."
KABA NOTE: Project Exile involves federal prosecution of local gun laws and also involves enforcement of unconstitutional laws and even ex-post-facto laws which are strictly prohibited by the United States Constitution. If you are yet unaware of just how wrongheaded and dangerous NRA's Project Exile is, go here: Project Exile Is Not Smart At All |

Depending on the news report you saw in January, a law student's murderous rampage on a Virginia campus ended when other students somehow "pounced on" or "subdued" the shooter. He dropped his weapon at someone's "prompting," a wire service put it.
"The slippery details largely went unreported, but they are of utmost interest to the gun lobby."
KABA NOTE: Of course the fact that an armed citizen stopped further violence in a widely publicized rampage is of interest to gun owners -- the story, if fully told, validates an armed citizenry. |

"Democratic candidates for governor Rod Blagojevich and Paul Vallas fought over which was the better advocate for gun control in a televised debate Wednesday, and they exchanged attacks over whether Vallas was tailoring his message Downstate to appeal to gun owners."
"Both men, along with the third contender, Roland Burris, also used the hourlong forum, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Illinois, to debate the influence of large campaign contributions."
KABA NOTE: Rod Blagojevich, you might note, has advocated gun bans. Take a look, as but one example, at his statements regarding his desire to ban the .50 caliber rifle: .50 CALIBER LIARS -- Exposing Multiple Untruths from Gun Prohibitionists |

"In a blow to gun-control 'advocates,' the Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that a gun maker cannot be held liable for the accidental death of an East Baltimore toddler, who shot himself with his father's handgun, because the gun was improperly kept under a mattress."
"The ruling rejects the contention by the mother of 3-year-old Jordan Garris that the Ruger semiautomatic pistol should be considered defective because it lacked a lock to make it childproof."
"Instead, judges of the state's highest court noted that the gun worked fine in June 1999 when the boy accidentally killed himself."
KABA NOTE: Here we have yet another case of a parent deflecting responsibility, and a judge putting her in her place. This is, indeed, good news for Liberty. |

"In a striking example of how much has changed since Sept. 11, National Neighborhood Watch, the folksy community program that has helped nab burglars and muggers for 30 years, will be expanded to help detect and deter suspected international terrorists."
"Attorney General John D. Ashcroft unveiled plans yesterday to add nearly $2 million in federal funds to the Neighborhood Watch program with the aim of doubling the number of local groups to 15,000 nationwide."
KABA NOTE: We encourage our members and visitors to check in to the Neighborhood Watch program and either get involved if one already exists or consider starting one. It's a great way to get to know a few more of your neighbors, to share information, to hone strategies for monitoring activities in your neighborhood, to interface with local law enforcement in a constructive manner, and to put any local would-be criminals on notice that they'd best move on down the road. |

"Suppose representatives of an industry pushed for a law giving them a monopoly on disseminating information about political campaigns and candidates. We would be outraged, right? Our outrage would be based on our belief in two important principles: first, that government should not grant monopolies, and second, that Congress should not violate freedom of speech and of the press."
"It's time for outrage. Because the industry representatives have been pushing for such a law for years. And Congress is about to pass such a law. The industry: newspapers and broadcasters. The law: federal campaign finance 'reform.' " |

Barr called on the Administration "to stop the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) from this irresponsible, politically-motivated attack on BB guns."

"Herbert Thompson III was one of 22 people receiving the awards today from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, for what Everett police spokesman Boyd Bryant said at the time required "extraordinary courage."
"Thompson foiled an armed robbery attempt at an AM/PM mini-mart at 220 SE Everett Mall Way. He entered the store to find a 23-year-old man pointing a gun at the cashier, Jamie Seltz. The robber demanded money and then fired a gun at Seltz, who was not injured. Thompson tackled the robber and held him until police arrived." |

"The National Shooting Sports Foundation today is re-emphasizing the need for parental responsibility in firearms ownership following a decision by Maryland's highest court in the case of an improperly secured and unattended firearm involved in the tragic and avoidable accident that left a three year-old boy dead."
In upholding dismissal of the case yesterday, Judge Alan Wilner writes, "There was no malfunction of the gun; regrettably, it worked exactly as it was designed and intended to work and as any ordinary consumer would have expected it to work. The gun is a lawful weapon and was lawfully sold. What caused this tragedy was the carelessness of Jordan's father in leaving the weapon and the magazine in places where the child was able to find them, in contravention not only of common sense but of multiple warnings given to him at the time of purchase." |

KABA NOTE: Where in the United States Constitution is the federal government authorized to take money from The People and give it to some people to lock up a constitutionally-protected item? Gun safety is the responsibility of gun owners, not Big Brother. |

"Baltimore's top FBI agent made an unusual public apology yesterday for the shooting Friday of an unarmed Pasadena man whom federal agents had mistakenly identified as a bank robbery suspect. But she refused to discuss the incident in detail, saying that could jeopardize open investigations."
"Let me express our sincere sorrow for this unfortunate accident," said Lynne A. Hunt, special agent in charge of the FBI's local office.
The FBI's [pathetic, evasive] comments came as the agency faced increasing pressure to fully account for the shooting. In Washington, a top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement to The Sun that the incident "raises a lot of questions that the FBI is going to have to answer publicly." |

"Two bills pending in the Legislature, S.261 and H.3010, would remedy much of the subjective language in the current concealed weapons permit (CWP) law that could be interpreted in such a manner as to make honest, law-abiding citizens into felons."
"For example: You legally have your pistol and your CWP permit in your locked glove box. The next morning your child walks in the house saying, "Mommy, I just missed the bus. Could you take me to school?" You are in a hurry to get to the office, but your child must also get to school. In a few moments, you pull up in front of the school and drop your child off. You are now a felon; go to jail."
"Unlike the Enron executives who lined up to "Plead the Fifth," don't expect to be able to similarly "Plead the Second" and claim your Second Amendment rights. Unlike the Fifth Amendment (which is universally accepted by politicians everywhere, and for good reason), the Second Amendment is only applicable in those places where our political leaders have granted us permission to have constitutional rights."
"The 4.5 million honest, law-abiding concealed weapons permit holders, nationwide, must be ever vigilant of where the "rapist and terrorist protection zones" are, so we don't inadvertently violate some terrorist's rights and stop them from harming our loved ones." |
