"Dozens of terrorist suspects on federal watch lists were allowed to buy firearms legally in the United States last year, according to a congressional investigation that points up major vulnerabilities in federal gun laws."

"People suspected of being members of terrorist groups are not automatically barred from legally buying a gun, and the new investigation, conducted by congressional officials at the Government Accountability Office (GAO), indicated that people with clear links to terrorist groups had taken advantage of this gap on a regular basis." ...

"One would imagine that after Sept. 11, every conceivable effort would be made by state and federal authorities to limit the extent to which terrorists could operate in America. As far as ideas go, this one is far from revolutionary-it's common sense. Everyone, it seems, agrees that we ought to be gunning for more stringent national security measures. Everyone, that is, except for the National Rifle Association."

"The NRA, not surprisingly, is acting aggressively to derail a proposed gun-control initiative in the Illinois state legislature. What is surprising, however, is the gun they are protecting is designed to destroy airliners. The weapon in question is the .50-caliber sniper rifle." ...

"At 15, I went deer hunting for the first time on Thanksgiving Day in Pickens County, Ala. For some time, Id been bugging Uncle Dennis about taking me. My dad doesn't hunt, but all my cousins do, so I wanted to try it. After lunch that day, Uncle Dennis said he would take any of us hunting who wanted to go. Although they didn't say it, I knew some of my cousins didn't want to go hunting with a girl, especially one that had never been. Turns out that I was the only one who wanted to go period!"

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A former Southport police officer is in jail after shooting his wife nearly a year ago.

Monday in court, 41-year-old Edward Meyer pled guilty to shooting his estranged wife, Kelly, in the arm during an argument. That happened last April.

Meyer will serve a 90-day sentence and must also surrender his law enforcement certificate, undergo counseling and have no further contact with his estranged wife. He will also be on probation for five years.

Kelly Meyer has already undergone two surgeries to repair her shattered shoulder. She says the 90-day sentence does not fit the crime, and wished Meyer had been sentenced to more.

The judge said Edward Meyer was supposed to enforce and uphold the law and he must now pay the price.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A former grand Rapids police officer has received his penalty for assaulting a suspect.

Matthew Lockhart had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery, an incident that stemmed from the arrest of Darius Joseph in June 2004.

Other officers reported that Lockhart beat Joseph with a police radio and kicked him.

In court Friday, Lockhart received 80 hours of community service or 15 days in jail.

He then spoke publicly for the first time about what happened last year.

"I would like to apologize for the incident and indicate to you that my behavior during this incident was totally out of character, and I regret it, and I assure you that I will not be before this court again," Lockhart told the courtroom.

He worked for the police department for nine years before being fired after his arrest.
