Gun control advocates thought they had defeated an attempt to repeal Virginia's "one gun a month" law. But there will be one more attempt this week to do away with it.
Democrats shipped off the proposed repeal to a Senate subcommittee which killed it along with several other gun bills March 4.
Prince William Delegate Scott Lingamfelter says they'll make one last attempt to revive the repeal in another committee Monday.
"The level to which we are willing in the House to trust the decisions of law abiding citizens, it seems to me that the Senate has a somewhat contrary view." |

Other businesses have taken a different tack and are embracing the movement.
The East Coast Pizza Bar and Grill in Walnut Creek, Calif., about 25 miles east of San Francisco, invited gun owners to host open carry meet-ups. At least 70 people attended one last Sunday, many carrying firearms, said the owner, Jessie Grunner, 30. And over a dozen returned on Thursday night for more.
Frankly, I wasnt sure how I would feel in that type of situation, and it really turned out to be a total nonissue, Ms. Grunner said. |

The federal facility prohibition does not apply to buildings located in a park or refuge that are not staffed by the federal government, such as restaurants, lodges and gift shops. However, private operators of these places are free to make their own rules subject to the law.
On the home front, Governor Bill Bredesen signed two bills this past week that will affect the state's gun owners. House Bill 2376, sponsored by Representative David Shepard (D-69) and Senator Doug Jackson (D-25), prohibits the destruction of confiscated firearms and requires that they be auctioned off or sold to a federally licensed firearms dealer.
Proceeds from the sale will be used for the benefit of local law enforcement agencies. |

We will assemble on the northeast corner of the Washington Monument grounds at 10:00 a.m. The entire program will take place there. After speaking with D.C. police and the National Park Service, we decided that it would be logistically difficult to stage an actual march. We would rather put our time and energy into making the rally the best that it can be!
When: April 19, 2010 (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) Where: Washington Monument grounds, Washington, D.C.

The Supremes are considering another 2nd amendment case which might have far reaching consequences (in a good way) on this particular battle front. George Will has a good column this week which takes a look at the history of the fight and what the implications of McDonald v Chicago might be.
This isnt a simple issue for those who havent followed this particular argument closely, but after Heller opened the door for the debate, it doest boil down to a matter of whether or not the 2nd amendment is an individual right (SCOTUS has already determined it is) but rather on which constitutional grounds the finding is based. |

Coffee shops such as Starbucks can provide considerable entertainment for the average Joe looking for a cup of joe.
Whether it's the greasy-looking crazies muttering conspiracy theories under their breaths or the suits with greased hair shouting into their Bluetooth sets, one can usually count on some sort of spectacle. Groups of "open carriers," gun owners who carry their firearms in public, are the newest addition to Starbucks' curious mix of patrons.
Starbucks recently decided it would allow patrons to carry weapons inside its stores, provided the stores are located in an area where carrying a weapon is legal. |

Since 1993's Brady Bill, sweeping legislation that required background checks for gun buyers, Democratic administrations in Washington have meant only one thing to many local gun owners: the prospect of increased Second Amendment restrictions.
With the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the local reaction has been no different.
Gun sellers from Ashland to Galion report a huge spike in local sales. More troubling for critics has been an accompanying spike in the number of people carrying concealed guns. The state said last week that almost 200,000 Ohioans are now authorized to carry concealed weapons. |

Police say that the 25 year old store clerk was in the Snappy Convenience Store on Friday night when a hooded man walked in, drew a gun, and pointed it at the clerk. Fearing for his life, the clerk reportedly grabbed his self defense gun and shot the robber once in the jaw, causing the robber to fall to the floor. When the robber tried to get up and continue the attack, the clerk fired a second shot, causing the robber to cease his attack, according to police. A suspect, reportedly identified as 24 year old Alexander Brown, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive and face charges, police say. The store clerk was unharmed. |

Although the Second Amendment gave citizens the right to buy firearms, the federal government has allowed cities and states to write their own laws allowing or banning firearm ownership.
Chicago outlawed guns in 1982, but residents challenged the law, saying that it violated their constitutional rights. In 2008, the Supreme Court passed a 5-4 ruling on the issue; Chicagos law was found to be in violation of the second amendment.

Ohioans For Concealed Carry is pleased to announce our endorsement of Senator Jon Husted for Ohio Secretary of State.
Senator Husted is a gun owner himself and has been a strong and consistent supporter of second amendment rights for his entire career.
Jon Husted voted to create and strengthen Ohios concealed carry law. The Ohio House debated concealed carry several times during Husteds eight-year tenure. In 2002, the House passed HB 274, but differences between the House and Senate could not be resolved and the bill never became law. In the 125th General Assembly, House Bill 12 was approved and signed into law, making Ohio one of 46 states at that time to have some form of concealed carry. |

The Chicago Gun Ban case before the Supreme Court could produce a watershed moment, not just for gun rights, but for larger constitutional issues. The case involves states rights, the Bill of Rights, and how the 14th Amendment affects personal rights. May the Federal Government step in to protect our rights from an oppressive state or local government?
...
Last year, The Supreme Court upheld our right to bear arms in the Heller Decision, but since it was a DC case, it was silent on such bans imposed by states and cities.
The Chicago Case before the Supreme Court is complex and involves much more that just the right to bear arms. Can the federal government compel states to respect The Bill of Rights?

In perhaps the biggest case to come before the Supreme Court this term, justices heard arguments this week in a suit challenging the city of Chicago's 28-year-old handgun ban. The high court last took up the Second Amendment two years ago, when it ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Constitution protects the individual right of D.C. residents to bear arms. The question now is whether that right extends to the rest of the country and whether state and local gun control laws interfere with it.
...
Well, Collin, you followed the argument at the Supreme Court this week. Are the justices prepared to extend the Second Amendment to the states?

As if that list were not wide-ranging enough, here's the net that can encompass tens of millions:
* Families with individuals who are serving or formerly served in the armed forces, including such families that have members of the armed forces who have had multiple deployments outside the United States.
So, while Johnny gets his gun, the government steps in to "help" his family at home. Ronald Reagan used to say the most frightening words in the English language were these: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Poor budget management is robbing trust funds period.
For years the legislature fought gun owners over paying for a statewide licensing program that would provide uniformity and fairness to gun owners. Legislators did not want taxpayers to fund a gun program. Gun owners are tax payers too and wanted tax dollars to fund the program.
In 1987, the concealed firearms licensing law passed with a financial contingency.
The legislature insisted that the gun owner program not be dependent upon General Revenue or any government funding whatever. |

The serial betrayal of that hope reached its culmination last week, when a Democratic-controlled Congress quietly voted to reauthorize three controversial provisions of the USA Patriot Act without implementing a single one of the additional safeguards that had been under consideration -- among them, more stringent limits on the national security letters (NSLs) Obama had once decried. Worse yet, the vote came on the heels of the revelation, in a blistering inspector general's report, that Obama's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) had issued a secret opinion, once again granting retroactive immunity for systematic lawbreaking -- and opening the door for the FBI to ignore even the current feeble limits on its power to vacuum up sensitive telecommunications records. |

An Eyewitness News investigation talks to a police officer who reveals the pressure they are under to make quotas. When Officer Adil Polanco dreamed of becoming a cop, it was out of a desire to help people not, he says, to harass them. "I'm not going to keep arresting innocent people, I'm not going to keep searching people for no reason, I'm not going to keep writing people for no reason, I'm tired of this," said Adil Polanco, an NYPD Officer. Officer Polanco says One Police Plaza's obsession with keeping crime stats down has gotten out of control. |

IONIA -- To the little boy's mother, it was just a 6-year-old boy playing around.
But when Mason Jammer, a kindergarten student at Jefferson Elementary in Ionia, curled his fist into the shape of a gun Wednesday and pointed it at another student, school officials said it was no laughing matter.
They suspended Mason until Friday, saying the behavior made other students uncomfortable, said Erin Jammer, Mason's mother.

"There's no mention of any 'standards' or why a gun store that promotes a Constitutionally-recognized right the Founders deemed 'necessary for the security of a free State' would fail to meet them. And if the 'inappropriate for children' do-gooders want to chime in, Carmel has a point noting inclusion of sponsors that include bars, and those who use sexual double entendres in their advertising. Under attack by anti-gun rights lobby groups for several weeks now, Starbucks has stuck to its guns in maintaining its policy regarding serving customers who are legally carrying firearms. Explains the Starbucks' press release:
"Starbucks long-standing approach to this issue remains unchanged. . . ."
. . .
It turns out that few American retail establishments ban customer gun carry. According to the Wall Street Journal, Starbucks is in good company with other so-called "open carry friendly" companies such as "Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Home Depot Inc., Best Buy Co., and Barnes & Noble Inc." Says Best Buy spokeswoman Sue Busch Nehring,
"Our practice is to comply with local and state laws."
