Every Wednesday afternoon, Doug Varrieur steps into his backyard in the Florida Keys, aims his .380 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol and fires shots that ricochet through city halls around the state. Varrieur, 57, discovered a little-noticed part of Florida law which prohibits local governments from restricting gun rights in any way, and in December he set up a personal gun range on his property in a residential subdivision. Neighbors were outraged by the live gunfire, but their surprise was nothing compared to that of municipal leaders, who were shocked to realize there was nothing they could do about it. |

A city police officer who was dispatched to help a domestic violence victim instead sexually assaulted the 31-year-old woman inside her home, and then threatened to return the next morning, prosecutors say.
Officer Deon Nunlee, 40, was on duty at 3 a.m. Oct. 30 when he and his partner were sent to a home in the 16800 block of Asbury Park on the citys northwest side after a woman dialed 911 to report her boyfriend had assaulted her.
But instead of aiding the victim, Nunlee is accused of taking her upstairs and sexually assaulting her.

Connecticut has been making news due to their hastily passed gun registration laws. According to some sources as few as 15% of gun owners have actually registered their firearms. News Blogs have been warning state officials are talking about mass confiscations of the unregistered firearms. Plans for these confiscations hit a snag when a legislative intern dared to ask a question. Who will be going door to door to take all the guns away? ... The unnamed intern then pointed at the list and said, my dads name is on the list, and he is the police chief. I see three other names on this list of family members, all cops. ... An anonymous source in the Governors office said lawmakers were dumbfounded.

Florida's notoriety as the "shoot first" state grows by the day. As its citizens pull guns on one another at gas stations and on basketball courts, at birthday parties and in movie theaters, the perception grows that the state's 2005 "stand your ground" law made it a safe haven for killers. But like many caricatures of the Sunshine State, this one is too simple. The truth is that Florida did not pioneer the controversial rules of justifiable homicide it adopted nine years ago though the rules' effects here might serve as a warning for other states. |

The NRA, the nations largest and oldest civil rights organization, is an important part of the politics of the Second Amendment. No one can deny that. But while LaPierre presents the organization as unflinching and unapologetic on gun rights, the NRA has a history of being on the wrong side of the battle for freedom.
Take District of Columbia v. Heller, for instance. The Supreme Court, in 2008, found D.C.s gun ban to be unconstitutional by affirming that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess a firearm, overturning decades of bad precedent.
While this would seem like a cut-and-dry case for the NRA to support, the purported unflinching and unapologetic gun rights organization nearly killed Heller. |

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday that the right to bear arms was the only last resort for Americans to protect their freedoms.
Speaking of religious liberty at CPAC, the former and potentially future presidential hopeful admonished the government for trying to regulate peoples religious beliefs.
When the government begins to say its OK for you to have faith, but you can only have this much of it. Its time for the government to scale back, not for people of faith to scale back, he said. |

The National Rifle Association has one more stop in its fight to block enforcement of Sunnyvales ban on large-capacity firearms magazines. The gun group said Friday it will ask the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency injunction to suspend the voter-approved law while an appeals panel in San Francisco considers the case.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Whyte refused to grant a preliminary injunction against the ban on large magazines. The ruling allowed the provision to take effect on Thursday. |

Just before the shooting, a robbery victim had called the police to report that someone from a house nearby had stolen marijuana and a gun from his own residence. Police were looking for Jonathan Chappell, also 24, but as they converged on the home, only Finkelstein came out from the garage.
Sgt. Johnson came out from behind a tree and announced he was a police officer. At that point, police say, Finkelstein raised a gun and fired at Johnson, hitting the deputy in the leg.
In a two-day hearing this week, Finkelsteins attorney argued that Johnson had not identified himself and Finkelstein had no choice but to act in self defense. Johnson survived the shooting. |

Organizers of an Orlando gun show say their weekend event has been moved to a new location after the original event space canceled upon learning George Zimmerman was a "special guest."
"They requested our special guest, Mr. George Zimmerman, not be allowed entry and we complied for the sake of our vendors," the New Orlando Gun Show posted on its website. "Later, the Majestic (which owns the event space) 'caved' over threats from anti-Zimmerman individuals and completely shut down the event." |

With the guns on school property amendment to SB 229, the Indiana legislature seems, as usual, preoccupied with forcing other institutions to accept firearms on their premises, while doing almost nothing to address gun violence in our largest city. Letting lawfully owned firearms on school property will make a school shooting easier for an angry parent or other adult, and lawfully owned guns are used in shootings. In fact, the killers of one-fifth of 511 law officers shot between 2000 and 2010 legally owned their guns, and the Violence Policy Center has been able to document 622 non self-defense homicides by concealed-carry permit holders since 2007. |

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill Wednesday by a 6-2 vote. Currently, people can keep a pistol in the car without a permit, but the weapon has to be unloaded, locked away and out of reach.
The Alabama Sheriffs Association opposed the bill at an earlier public hearing citing concern for public safety and the loss of permit fees to counties. Republican Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, one of the bills sponsors, said he believes people should be able to keep a loaded weapon in their car, just as they can their house, without paying a fee. |

Gov. Bill Haslam said he still has concerns about a legislative effort by fellow Republicans to strip local governments of their ability to ban guns at local parks and ball fields.
The governor, a former Knoxville mayor, said Thursday that for him it boils down to property rights instead of the Second Amendment.
City councils and county commissions have said, OK, our taxpayers have paid for that park, and their elected representatives, I think, should get to decide what happens in the parks, the governor told reporters following a jobs announcement news conference in Dickson. |
