When President Obama left office, gun sales nationwide were at an all-time high. FBI background checks, one of the strongest indicators of national gun sales, totaled 27.5 million in 2016, shattering the record of 23 million set in 2015. Although the number of FBI checks remains high, the upward trend witnessed under Obama has changed course under President Trump. |

Why do Democrats, self-proclaimed champions of the poor, make it so difficult for poor people to defend themselves? Democrats oppose even free voter IDs as imposing too much of a burden on the poor, but when it comes to guns, they don't hesitate to impose fees, expensive training requirements and onerous background checks. These are precisely the things that can put guns out of reach for poor people. |

We told you recently how Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy has doubled down on his anti-gun extremism by pushing a plan to try to balance the budget on the backs of law-abiding gun owners. With Connecticut facing a $3.6 billion budget deficit, Malloy proposed a budget that would dramatically increase the cost of pistol permit fees. The $70 local fee and the $70 state fee make the cost of an initial permit $140, with renewals being $70 every five years. But under Malloys proposal, the state fee would be increased to $300. With this $300 state fee and the existing $70 local fee, the total cost for an initial permit would be increased to $370, with $300 every five years for renewals. |

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would further expand access to guns on college campuses, which one official has described as a "very disturbing" effort. The bill, which is scheduled to come up for debate Tuesday in the House Civil Justice Committee, would allow part-time employees at public colleges to carry concealed guns on campus. It is an extension of a law passed last year without Gov. Bill Haslam's signature that allowed full-time employees to carry guns.
