MI: Geoffrey Fieger takes on Trump's proposal to arm teachers

The proposal made by President Donald Trump to arm teachers with guns is not only unfeasible, it would be worse than ineffective. What we need is a rational discussion of rational proposals.

Arming, training (and maintaining what would be the equivalent of the third-largest army in the world) would be a logistical and economic nightmare. There may be some teachers willing to carry guns, but the vast majority of teachers do not want guns in the classroom. Recruiting armed teachers would be difficult, a fact recognized by Trump who proposed a "bonus" for volunteers. Normal attrition of licensed and trained teachers means the cost would continue and grow every year.

It's no secret that guns exist in Ohio's Sidney City Schools. All you have to do is read the signs prominently displayed outside.

"Inside this building our children are protected by an armed and trained response team," says one sign that serves as a warning to visitors.

Here, in this district just a few dozen miles north of Dayton, loaded Glock 19s are strategically hidden in school buildings, tucked inside biometric safes that can only be opened with a thumbprint ready for trained staff to use if the unthinkable happens.

For Hailey New, a sophomore at Sidney High School, knowing the guns exist provides comfort at a time when the idea of a school shooting seems "always a possibility."

Finally, it seems like our country is poised to start a real gun control debate, and it had better be more substantial than business-as-usual.

It seems like a consensus could develop around tightening up how dangerous or mentally ill people are able to buy assault rifles, but I think this improvement will only do so much. Anyone who wants to buy, borrow or steal an assault rifle in this country has plenty of other avenues besides an over-the-counter purchase. However, if strategic and sensitive gun controls help prevent even one more mass shooting, then Im willing to risk some of our liberties. We cant go on like this.

A man who allegedly killed his roommate in a Drake neighborhood apartment Wednesday morning may have been defending himself, said Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for Des Moines police.

The body of Christopher John Latimer, 34, of Des Moines, was found in an upper-level apartment at 1076 21st St., Parizek said.

Latimer lived in the unit along with his mom, 55-year-old Lynne Marie Bailey and her boyfriend, Parizek said.

Whatever happened to self defense? Are we supposed to be knocked unconscious, shot down and destroyed and not be able to strike back?

If we are brave enough to defend ourselves, we will be sent into the legal system, and if were convicted well go to jail or prison. Well be separated from our families and have a record that follows us the rest of our lives. And well be forced to pay a big fine with money we dont have!

An argument between two men turned violent in Fresno on Thursday morning, that left one shot and another with a serious leg injury.

This all happened along a canal near Clovis and Belmont. Police said 73-year old Philip Kiser, who has a valid concealed weapons permit, shot 22-year old Daymond Martin in the hip. Officers believe Martin may have hit Kiser first with a wooden stick. Fresno Police said Kiser may have been acting in self defense.

Every assault weapon is an unexploded bomb. We dont know where they are buried or when the next one will go off. It could be at a school, a church, a concert, a nightclub, a mall, anywhere people congregate.

Unlike your car or washing machine, these durable goods may be effective for a very long time. It could explode today, tomorrow, next week, next year, decades from now, even a century from now.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said 73-year-old Philip Kiser strolls the canal bank on a daily basis walking his dog or cleaning up. But police said on Thursday 22-year-old Damon Ray Martin, a neighbor, attacked Kiser.

"There was some type of confrontation or argument. It's my understanding they've had a conflict in the past. The 22-year-old at some point, according to the victim, grabbed a stick of some sort or a wooden object and struck the 73-year-old."

The bills, 15 in the 11 states, would strengthen stand-your-ground laws in Wyoming and Idaho, allow people to carry handguns in Oklahoma without permits, and in other states, allow gun owners to carry in more locations. Most of the bills are making their way to the respective governor's desks.

In Idaho, a bill to strengthen the state's "stand your ground" law, expands the definition of justifiable homicide to include not just the home, but also a shooter's vehicle or place of employment.

Each aisle she turned down, he seemed to be there. By the shelves of Cap'n Crunch and Cocoa Puffs. By the cans of chicken noodle soup and pinto beans and pasta sauce. By the rows of fresh lettuce.

And when Jacee Cole went to check out, he was there by the cash registers, too.

She didn't know who he was or what he wanted or why he was watching her. "I think I'm being followed," she whispered to her mom on her phone.

With the death penalty, Hughes appealed to his colleagues' libertarian leanings, arguing that ending capital punishment should be a conservative position. The measure failed to win enough support to pass the House.

He also backed a bill to allow police to temporarily seize the guns of those deemed to be a threat, but the measure, introduced in the session's final days, also failed.

On the other side of the aisle, the Democrats want action, but it's terrible action they want. What they want, of course, is to take our guns.

Once again, the Democrats are pushing a tired but obvious agenda that amounts to little more than creeping confiscation. They want universal background checks, they want bump stocks and modern sporting rifles banned, they want mandatory waiting periods.

This is the same agenda they always propose after a mass shooting, never mind that these proposals would not have stopped most, if any, of those shootings. The Florida shooter passed a background check, for example, he didn't use a bump stock, and he bought his rifle about a year before the shooting.

The desire to do something is obvious. But what about a 20-year-old woman who is being stalked by a rapist or a killer? Research shows that having a gun is by far the most effective way for young women to defend themselves.

A ban on gun sales to anyone younger than 21 won't keep people who are determined to be mass killers from getting weapons.
We have to consider both types of cases to decide what changes will save the most lives.

Fortunately, we dont need to guess. This isnt the first time that the government has raised the age requirement for rifle purchases. In 1994 the first federal limits required buyers to be 18 years of age. Prior to that law, there was no federal age requirement for buying a rifle.

A bill that would codify existing stand your ground statute in Idaho is headed to the House floor.

The House State Affairs Committee voted 12-3 Thursday to send SB 1313 to the full chamber with a do-pass recommendation after two hours of impassioned testimony for and against the legislation.

SB 1313, one of two Castle Doctrine bills introduced this session, would put self defense standards that already exist in Idaho case law and jury instruction into statute.

Proposed changes include expanding the definition of justifiable homicide to include not only defending ones home against an intruder, but also defending ones place of employment or an occupied vehicle.

At night, we lay on the pull-out bed splayed with college brochures, our brains aching from the brain dump of information weve just received. CNN Town Hall - Lets give the students a voice, they say. Lets make this Parkland issue relate to politics, and bring NRA and questionable, semi-hated Marco Rubio in for a little cinematic excitement, some drama to contrast against their typical tell-all news.

We watch the event for two or so hours, only preventing tears with our anger towards that NRA representative. The whole time I cant get myself to understand why.

Why are killing weapons, semi-automatic rifles, easier to buy than handguns? Why cant they just install tougher background checks?

In this weeks edition of Problematic Women, we break down Ambassador Nikki Haley clapping back at the Palestinian leader who told her to shut up. Bumble, the popular dating app, is encouraging its users to report anyone with a gun in their photos. Bethany Mandel appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss why as a mother she has chosen to own a gun.

The American Enterprise Institutes Factual Feminist, Christina Hoff Sommers, traveled to Oregon to give a speech at Lewis & Clark Law School. Several disruptors came into the lecture hall, screaming, shouting, and playing music to drown her out. How does this type of behavior benefit any group?

I understand some people reading this will say, Ron is just reacting to this shooting on emotion because his grandson was in Stoneman Douglas High School during the shooting. Believe what you want, but the truth is I have held very strong opinions on gun control, and the NRA in particular, that might not sit well with a lot of pro-gun people. People who know me well already know this. The fact is I am pro-gun but do not and never will see all guns as equal. I believe there is no place for anyone but the military and police to have the so called black guns. Those are the assault-type semi-automatic rifles and all semi-automatic pistols.

Since Trump took office, Black citizens have been increasingly arming themselves, a practice rooted in the long Black radical tradition of armed self-defense and articulated in Robert F. Williamss Negroes With Guns. In a recent interview with Jeremy Scahill of The Intercept, historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz argued that the Second Amendment needs to be abolished. Doing so, however, would disarm not only right-wing vigilantes, as she wants to do, but also Black citizens.

Up to 1975, The NRA had not opposed gun regulations and had not made a fetish of the Second Amendment. It had been founded following the Civil War by a group of former Union Army officers in the North to sponsor marksmanship training and competitions, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz writes in Loaded, her new deep dive into the origins of the Second Amendment. In 1934, during the Depression, the NRA testified in favor of the first federal gun legislation that sought to keep machine guns way from outlaws, such as the famous Bonnie and Clyde and Pretty Boy Floyd, and Chicago gangsters. During testimony, a Congressman asked the NRA witness if the proposed law would violate the Constitution, the witness said he knew of none.

In the recent televised debate with Democratic congressional candidate Conor Lamb, Republican Rick Saccone indicated he'd sponsored five pieces of legislation to reduce gun violence. Given what I know about Saccone's record (pro-Saccone PACs have praised him for wanting to eliminate the background check system and for protecting gun rights for people on the terrorist watch list), this sounded fishy. So I contacted his office for the names of the bills and looked them up.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. John Stuart Mills
