IN: Finding common ground on guns wont be simple

Since the 1980s, the pro-gun camp has sought to loosen or eliminate existing gun laws while resisting any new legislation, asserting that there should be no limits on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

Americans have a constitutional right to own firearms for self-defense and other purposes, but no right is absolute. As the founders understood, absolute freedom is anarchy. Their goal was to create a constitutional system that could balance freedom and order: Protect individual liberty while simultaneously promoting the public interest.

While this story ends well with no one injured, good guys, or bad guys, there are a few takeaways from this story that can help us learn from it.

An Alaskan man was at a gas station on a recent Friday morning getting his usual breakfast and energy drink. Thats when a 17-year-old man walked in with a knife in his hand and attempted to rob the business. The man witnessing this did not have his firearm on him. It was in his car. (Mistake #1)

Its hard to imagine choosing a nominee who is more hostile to the rights of American gun owners than Chipman.

Chipman is a Gun Control Extremist

David Chipmans current employer, Giffords, co-founded by United States Senator Mark Kelly, filed a brief in the landmark Second Amendment case, District of Columbia v. Heller. The brief argued that, The Second Amendment Does Not Limit the Options Available to Cities to Address the Problem of Gun Violence. Notably, Giffords argued that the Districts complete ban on the possession of handguns by law-abiding Americans was constitutional. Such an interpretation would have completely eviscerated the Second Amendment.

This concern has roots in a live stream where a seemingly wide-eyed and bushy-tailed Rob Pincus spoke of a possible future where gun companies could sell printable receiver files on a kind of Apple Music of guns. This suggestion was met with much vitriol online, where it seemed both sides were talking past one another ...

The suggested idea seemed to be a kind of watermarked, single-use, traceable file, where something like a serial number and user data would be baked into the file. This could take the form of an identifying number printed into the part physically, along with identifying user data such as initials or name, or metadata baked into the file itself.

Missouri Republicans said they are ready to oppose President Joe Bidens executive actions on gun violence.

The President called the gun violence in the country an epidemic during his announcement of six executive actions Thursday. In Missouri, there is legislation making its way through the General Assembly which would protect Missourians from any federal gun laws. Senate Republicans said they are willing to have that conversation over the legislation sooner rather than later to stop the President from taking away guns.

A Butler County grand jury declined to indict a man who shot another man in Hamilton after he reportedly intervened during an assault on a woman in the 400 block of Seventh Street.

The grand jury determined that the shooting came in self-defense and did not indict the man, whom the Journal-News is not naming because he was not charged.

The incident stemmed from a March 29 domestic violence dispute that spilled out onto the front yard about 8 a.m., and witnesses saw Robert Allen Hill, 46, assaulting his 48-year-old girlfriend, according to Hamilton police.

Finally, we get to the toughest question. Do police need AR-15s? In the past, a few selected long guns for sniper kinds of activities and shotguns for closer range incidents were adequate. It seems to me that is still the case. Also, while I can certainly see the need for large capacity magazines for military soldiers, I cannot see that same need for police.

Therefore, I must conclude that people who purchase weapons for self-defense need weapons like handguns, shotguns, and rifles, but not AR-15s or large capacity magazines (or fighter jets or nuclear bombs or tanks or howitzers or grenade launchers).

Attorneys general from Arkansas, West Virginia and Montana appear to disagree.

"As a Christian, pro-life, gun carrying, conservative mama, you bet Im not going to let Joe Biden take our Second Amendment rights away with just a simple stroke of the pen," Arkansas Attorney General and 2022 gubernatorial candidate Leslie Rutledge said in a video posted to Twitter Friday. "As attorney general, I will push back against Biden's gun grab."

Earlier this week, the House of Representatives held floor votes on pro-gun measures, House Bill 307 and House Bill 334. Thanks to your strong support, these measures passed and will advance to the Senate for review this session.

House Bill 307: Over recent years, numerous local governments have attempted to enact gun control ordinances in violation of the current state firearms preemption law, putting law-abiding gun owners at risk. This piece of legislation aims at strengthening New Hampshires preemption law to protect New Hampshire gun owners. Further, HB 307 allows anyone adversely impacted by an ordinance or regulation to file suit against the county, city, town or government entity that enacted the violation.

Yesterday, the House voted to pass House Bill 3096 on third reading. It has been sent to the Senate for further consideration.

House Bill 3096 allows a law-abiding adult to carry a handgun without first having to obtain government permission. This ensures that citizens have the right to self-defense without government red tape or delays. Additionally, this legislation maintains the existing Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP) system, so citizens who still wish to obtain a permit may do so. Currently, 20 other states have constitutional/permitless carry.

Edward Soto is the owner of Palmetto Indoor Range in Hardeeville, South Carolina. He has been teaching the public how to use guns for 17 years.

The average citizen understands its a (heck) of a responsibility owning a gun, Soto said.

Over the past year, Soto has noticed a rise in gun sales and concealed carry permits.

People buying firearms and first-time buyers have gone up at least tenfold, Soto said.

Classes usually have an average of 10 to 12 students a month, now it is 40.

Calling all Rhode Island gun owners! A month ago, the House Judiciary Committee had an all-night hearing on gun bills, and this time it is the Senates turn. Undeterred by COVID closures, anti-gun politicians refuse to take a day off when it comes to trampling on your Second Amendment rights. It is extremely important that NRA members sign up to testify and make their voices heard. Even if you participated in the House hearing, we need your support once again. Testimony need not include anything more than your short statement of opposition to these infringements.

Texas could soon join the ranks of a small, but growing, club of states that have passed laws that designate them as second amendment sanctuaries.

On Tuesday, the State Affairs Committee in the Texas House approved House Bill 2622, which would prevent state resources to enforce any new federal restrictions on firearms and ammunition. The bill, titled the Second Amendment Sanctuary State Act, would prevent state officials from enforcing new federal gun ownership rules, such as firearm registries, licensing requirements and confiscation programs.

It mirrors legislation that previously passed in Alaska, Kansas, Idaho, Wyoming, and, most recently, Arizona.

The situation in Nigeria is a perfect example of what happens when innocent civilians are unable to defend themselves. And why our founding fathers made a point to secure the right to bear arms second only to the freedom of speech and religion. Because you cannot have one without the other.

I have seen this happen elsewhere. When ISIS militants stormed into northern Iraq, within hours they decimated and took control of entire villages. The police fled and the people could not defend themselves. And as a result, hundreds of thousands of families were forcibly displaced overnight. Yezidi men were taken and shot to death, lining mass graves with their bodies.

Tom Rinehart, manager of Precision Shooting, an Austintown gun store, says President Joe Bidens gun-control executive orders are an overreach by the government and wont stop violence.

The bad guy doesnt buy a gun at a gun store, he said. You could put all sorts of restrictions in place, but it still isnt going to stop the guy bound and determined to commit a crime.

Biden issued executive orders Thursday that include requiring ghost guns, which are homemade guns built from a kit, to be treated as firearms that mandate serial numbers and background checks on buyers.

ND: 'Stand-your-ground' bill passes in North Dakota Legislature, moves to governor's desk

North Dakota lawmakers have approved a bill that would significantly lower the legal bar for using deadly force in self-defense.

The so-called "stand-your-ground" legislation would expand the existing "castle" law that permits the use of deadly force at one's home or workplace but requires an effort to escape the attacker in public places unless one's life is in danger. The bill would eliminate the "duty to retreat" and allow the use of deadly force to prevent a violent felony anywhere a person is legally permitted to be.

RI: Now is the time for our state legislators to pass common sense gun laws to protect the lives of all Rhode Islanders.

As an Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America volunteer in Rhode Island, I believe that now is the time to pass common-sense gun safety bills.

Numerous common-sense gun safety bills have been introduced by members of the General Assembly this legislative session that would keep Rhode Islanders safe from gun violence while preserving their right to bear arms for self-defense. These bills would promote responsible gun ownership, help prevent illegal gun trafficking, keep our schools safe, and limit the availability of dangerous assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a public safety hazard don't see the danger in the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the constitution they don't like. Alan Dershowitz
