"So youve tried every standard type of holster under the sun and cant abide dragging around a boat anchor pistol all day long. Some people are recoil sensitive, youre carry sensitive. Not that theres anything wrong with that. The thing is, you still want to have a gun with you wherever you go. That means off-body carry, with the attendant compromises that go along with not having possession of your mohaska at all times. Youre not alone. Plenty of gun owners out there go that way. The problem is, fanny packs are, well, fanny packs. So if youre a dood, that leaves you with some kind of turse . . ." ... |

"Remington Arms has thrown in the towel re: claims that their flagship Model 700 rifles are not drop safe/safe from unintentional discharges. The company has just announced (on a Friday, of course) a Voluntary Product Recall of all 700s and Model Sevens with the X-Mark Pro triggers manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014. No doubt The Freedom Group this announcement accompanies an agreement to settle the lawsuits filed against the company by injured parties. Equally certain: the payout will trigger the arrival of an entire fleet of ambulance chasers. Add in the cost of this recall and man, thats got to hurt. But not as much as getting shot by your own rifle. Press release after the jump . . ." ... |

After I did a little whining in the comments it was suggested that maybe this actually warranted a follow-up post. So here she is. "Texas DPS started switching over to the new Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handguns recently for their state troopers. The polymer framed striker-fired handguns are popular with police departments and competition shooters. The ability to carry more rounds per magazine (9mm vs. .357 SIG) in a lighter gun were among the stated reasons for the change. But it appears that the latest wave of recruits in training have experienced an 'unacceptable' number of issues with the new gun, and the department is rolling back the changeover, moving back to their tried and true SIG SAUER P226 pistols in .357 SIG. As an owner of a P226, I cant say I blame them. Heres the word to the troops from the man himself, forwarded by a source close to TTAG . . ." ... |

"It will come as no surprise to regular readers that we consider the Springfield Armory M1A Scout Squad to be one of the finest .30-caliber defensive carbines money can buy. And thats why most of us here at On Target own one of them. The M1A Scout Squad is a relatively light (8 lbs. 4 oz.), eminently rugged, battle-proven design, and its 7.62 NATO cartridge packs a major punch ... If it really needs killingfrom North American big game to threats of the two-legged, dirt-bag kindthen 7.62 NATO will produce the desired results." ... |

"Every day, 88 people die from firearm-related injury; two-thirds of those deaths are suicides, a high proportion of which are committed by seniors and individuals living in rural areas, researchers reported here."
"'Mass shooting episodes are obviously horrible,' Molly Cooke, MD, president of the American College of Physicians (ACP), told reporters in a press briefing. 'But one of the points we make in the paper is that every day there are 88 firearms-related deaths.'"

"Some argue that the debate--about whether the Second Amendment intended to grant the right to keep and bear arms to individuals--is over. I usually interpret this assertion to mean that these folks would like for the debate to be over since five right-wing justices on the Supreme Court have ruled in favor of this position." ... -------
Submitter's Note: No, it is over (except for the fact that rights in the BoR are not "granted" they are protected). In Heller v. DC ALL NINE Justices agreed that it protects an individual right! Justices Souter, Ginsberg and Breyer concurred with Justice Stevens' dissent which opens with:The question presented by this case is not whether the Second Amendment protects a "collective right" or an "individual right." Surely it protects a right that can be enforced by individuals. But a conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right does not tell us anything about the scope of that right. |

"... Kansas legislators passed a bill last Saturday that would seem to encourage the practice of open carry in that state. Open carry is already legal in Kansas, but HB 2578 reinforces that with a state level preemption, saying that cities and counties are prohibited from adopting or enforcing regulations regarding firearms, and further prohibits any regulations relating to federal firearms licensees that are more restrictive than similar regulations regarding the sale of any other commercial goods. The new law specifically and categorically nullifies any ordinances, resolutions or regulations already in place prior to the effective date of the bill. ... "A fellow at Forbes by name of David Blackmon offers a level-headed analysis, filed in a different cabinet as it were, of what many consider to be the by-and-large unreported substance of the enmities:""The dispute in question goes back to 1993, when the BLM cut the grazing rights of the rancher in question, Mr. Cliven Bundy, from a herd of thousands of head of cattle to one of no more than 150 head ... Most mainstream news media reports on this story naturally did not inform their readers of this fact, or of the fact that this tiny herd allotment would be spread over the 158,000 acres of land to which Bundy held the grazing rights." "Thus, by effectively slaughtering the bulk of Bundys herd ... BLM can be understood by reasoning folk to have attempted to run Bundy -- and other ranchers -- off the land entirely. ..." ... |
