"Glenn notes that Bush has endorsed a renewal of the 'assault weapons' ban. I don't think that it's as bad for him politically as the good Professor does."

"I'd think that the chances of an extension passing are close to nil, even with a Bush endorsement, and he (and Rove) knows that (remember, it was a Democrat-controlled Congress that got the first one through). And remember who's majority leader in the House. Tom Delay probably won't even let it out of committee."

"So it's probably a safe position to take. He can make himself look moderate to the moderates, while still allowing the thing to die, thus pleasing his gun rights constituency." ...

"A gunman with an AK-47 rifle opened fire in a high school gym Monday, killing a 15-year-old boy and wounding three teenage girls in a spray of more than 30 bullets that sent students scrambling for cover." ...

"Police identified the victim as Jonathan Williams. Police had not determined a motive Monday night, but students said the shooting was apparently gang related and may have been retaliation for a previous fight."

-------
The media once again misinforms the public with misleading headlines. Perhaps the headline should have read "Gangbanger kills own, 3 bystanders hurt" instead.

"Recently, several Canadian judges have ruled that simple possession of marijuana is no longer a crime. What has caused this turn of events? Why it's medical marijuana. It seems that Canadian judges find it unconstitutional for marijuana to be legal as medicine and then force the sick to resort to the black market for their medicine. In the US, nine states have passed laws allowing the medical use of marijuana but only California allows patient access to their medicine..."

"One of the stories the news media have been inaccurately reporting, Wilbur charged, is gun control. Every year, nearly 2.5 million incidents occur in which guns are used for self-defense or to prevent a criminal act, he said, but fewer than 1 percent of those result in a fatality. However, he argued, the news media have failed to report on this. In 2001, for instance, the New York Times carried one story about successful gun use, while the Chicago Tribune and Washington Post each carried three. That same year, Newsweek ran an issue called "America Under the Gun," but the magazine's reporting had no examples of responsible gun use."

"The administration can hardly claim confidence that its screening, reinforced doors and air marshals are enough. When we last went to Code Orange alert, jet fighters were flying over New York City and Washington, and surface-to-air missiles were set up to shoot down a hijacked aircraft if necessary. The administration continues to be more worried about pilots with guns than about having to shoot down a passenger airplane."

"But how are the people to know when tyranny is at their doorstep? Tyranny and despotic government are easily recognized once measured by these basic, commonsense ground rules. Tyrannical government relies upon the law-abiding mindset of the populace that regards compliance with established laws as good citizenship. Such law-abiding citizens feel that their only need for direct involvement in government occurs when called upon to vote, serve on a jury, or when paying their taxes."

"The Second Amendment Movement, the pro-gun movement, the RKBA movement - whatever you want to call it, needs to grow. It absolutely has to. We must see an overwhelming groundswell of support and identification with the generations who will be running the planet in a decade or three - and it isnt there! Are public and private ranges crowded with teenagers wed welcome into our lives, are we seeing to it that the growth rate of new ranges is outpacing the inflation rate? How about cultural and sociological diversity at matches - much less a reasonable representation of men and women?"

"The media and those who support the war have made much ado about the 'liberation' of Iraq. But the Bush administrations own term for thisregime changeindicates that Iraq is not being liberated, it is simply getting a different regime. First a military government appointed by Paul Wolfowitz will rule Iraq indefinitely, and Iraqs oil will be used to pay for the occupation and probably some of the cost of the war. ...Iraq currently does not have an income tax, but the Bush administration is planning to impose a progressive income tax. It is also planning to disarm the Iraqi people; that process has already begun." ...

The ME's classification of gun-related deaths as homicide, suicide, or accident determines the rate of unintentional deaths in Miami-Dade County, Fla. However, this classification can be biased and subjective and may affect the reporting of unintentional pediatric firearm fatalities."

"On December 14, 2002, Ron Dixon, a 27 year-old naturalized citizen who emigrated from Jamaica and served in the US Navy, used a gun to protect his two children in New York City. The Brooklyn District Attorney is desperately trying to throw Dixon in jail for the crime of protecting his children with an unlicensed gun. Consider children that weren't as lucky to have a father's protection as demonstrated by Ron Dixon: Danielle Van Dam, Jean Benet Ramsey or Samantha Runnion. This may be the law, but it certainly isn't justice!"

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I now think the only way to control handgun use is to prohibit the guns. And the only way to do that is to change the Constitution. M. Gartner, then President of NBC News, USA Today, January 16, 1992, pg. A9
