"Arming everybody is not the answer and disarming everybody isn't entirely possible, so you have to look for other solutions," he said.
Concealed weapon permit-holders are allowed to carry arms on college campuses in Utah, although a law passed this year by the Legislature enables students who live on campus to opt not to share dorm rooms with peers who have gun permits, Young said. |

Law and order advocates have argued for the right of students to carry guns for self defense, and last year, such legislation was defeated in the Virginia Assembly.
...
For some strange reason the date, April 17th, has been adopted by perpetrators of evil as a holiday to out do each other with unspeakable acts. This is also the anniversary of the Waco Texas Stand-off fire at the Branch Davidian Compound, and the bombing of the Muira Building in Oklahoma City by Timothy Mcveigh. Cultural observers have also linked these occurrences to the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's suicide.
Ed.: Grain of salt: Waco & the Murrah building explosion actually happend on April 19th, and Hitler died April 30. |

The President is correct that Americans have a right to bear arms — under the Second Amendment to our Constitution — but that right should be repealed. And true, changing the Supreme Law of the Land provides no guarantee that the new laws will be followed, any more than the current laws, but anything that reduces the number of guns and rifles at large is a good thing.
It is also true that people, not guns, pull the trigger. But if the gunman at Virginia Tech had been armed with a knife, fewer people would have been killed. |

The way I read it, the Second Amendment is talking about militias, such as the National Guard is.
Time though that we see this Amendment rewritten in a more definitive tone.
Do we allow guns or not? And if so, when and to whom? Yes, I know. Shooter may have been able to procure his guns anyway- but that's not the point. |

The St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported Monday that while the latest Taser model could be used effectively as a self-defense tool, state authorities are concerned that the device could be used incorrectly or be used by criminals.
'It's not a complex weapon but the weapon has to be deployed properly to work properly,' Sgt. Joshua Lego, a St. Paul police training officer, told the newspaper. 'To rely on a self-defense option that requires correct deployment in a violent scenario is to hope that it will be effective, when there`s other things you can do that are equally effective if not more so.' |

However, the historical view espoused by those such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Mason and most recently by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals says that, in fact, the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms. In writing for the court’s 2-1 majority, Judge Laurence Silberman pointed out, “In determining whether the Second Amendment’s guarantee is an individual one, or some sort of collective right, the most important word is the one the drafters chose to describe the holders of the right —‘the people.’” Silberman went on to recognize that the Second Amendment does not confer a right but rather recognizes a natural right inherent in our humanity. |

Because the state's generous turkey population is still a relatively new development, built largely with trap/relocation/release efforts that started only about 30 years ago, the information pool of turkey hunting is still a little shallow for some sportsmen and women. Newcomers to turkey hunting are coming into the pursuit every year, so the skills are a work in progress.
Here is a collection of tips - how-to gleaned from longtime hunters, wildlife biologists and the National Wild Turkey Federation - that could help new hunters and veterans, too. |

Virginia law enforcement officials have not identified the weapon used in the shootings today at Virginia Tech, but gun experts say the number of shots fired indicate, at the very least, that the gunman had large quantities of ammunition.
"When you have a weapon that can shoot off 20, 30 rounds very quickly, you're going to have a lot more injuries," said Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
"It's not one or two shots at a time when you're putting 20 bullets, spraying them into a classroom or into a dorm room," Helmke said. |

Sen. John McCain says the shooting rampage at Virginia Tech does not change his view that the Constitution guarantees everyone the right to carry a weapon.
"We have to look at what happened here, but it doesn't change my views on the Second Amendment, except to make sure that these kinds of weapons don't fall into the hands of bad people," McCain said Monday in response to a question. |

According to the latest news reports, 33 people were killed and 29 injured during a shooting rampage on April 16, 2007 at Virginia Technical University. Previously, the deadliest campus shooting in the country took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, in which 17 people, including the gunman, were killed.
The general approach to preventing these types of incidences has been to ban the possession of firearms at all schools and colleges. The perpetrators of massacres like the one at Virginia Tech and Columbine prove what gun owners have been saying all along: Criminals, by their very nature do not obey the law. |

"But that is not an option at Virginia Tech. Tech bans guns on campus, as do most public colleges. ..."
"Virginia is already a 'gun free' zone. That didn't stop the worst school rampage in history. How many more dead bodies will convince school administrators that disarming innocent victims and leaving them defenseless to be preyed upon by armed thugs is not acceptable?" |

The Million Mom March (MMM) Chapters of Virginia united with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence join the nation in grieving for the families of the victims of the worst mass shooting in American history. "This tragedy at Virginia Tech affects us all," says Terry Hartnett, president of the Million Mom March of Northern Virginia. "It is such a heartbreaking commentary on American values. Money from special interest groups opposed to sensible gun-safety legislation seems to motivate our legislators more than the opportunity to make our universities, our local schools and streets safer for our children. We need some serious soul-searching by our elected officials," she says. |

Earlier today, tragedy struck the campus of Virginia Tech. Young people just beginning to make their mark on the world have been killed in a senseless act of gun violence. My heart goes out to the families of those lost in this heinous act. It has been more than a decade since meaningful legislation that would prevent gun violence has been signed into law. This pattern must change. For too long Congress has stood idle while gun violence continues to take its toll. The unfortunate situation in Virginia could have been avoided if Congressional leaders stood up to the gun lobby. |

"...A very sad event to say the least. And, those who are concerned with our unalienable right, all know what is going to happen next. The 'guns' of course will be blamed. And the call for a 'ban' or further restrictions will be cried for loudly. And this, rather then blaming the person that perpetrated the atrocity."
"What I am going to propose will probably ruffle a few feathers, but the TRUTH always does."
"First, the fault lies in the errant "Gun Free School Zone" policy. The right and duty of Self-Preservation is the First Law of Nature. . . . It is not only our "Right", but our "Duty to be at all times armed"...." |

For thousands of Texans, the right to own and carry a gun is no less an essential ingredient of life than the right to own a house, a business or other piece of property. The Second Amendment and private property rights may even edge out football and give motherhood a run for its money among the values that define the Lone Star State. And in a Legislature dominated by conservative Republicans, guns and private-property rights have peacefully coexisted in a common political base at least until now. |

Almost as steady as yesterday morning's rain were the hands of 12-year-old Casey Stiller, wrapped around a Ruger target rifle at the Putnam County Fish and Game Association's shooting range on Drewville Road. Sitting on a bench next to instructor Bill Allcot, Stiller peered through the sights of her firearm and aimed it at the target, 50 feet away. Wearing protective glasses and bright orange earplugs, the Mahopac Middle School student pulled the trigger. Bull's-eye. |

The guns brought the butter to St. Louis this weekend, as the National Rifle Association produced the largest convention ever here, and perhaps the NRA's largest anywhere. The NRA was aiming for 60,000 participants, and organizers say the convention surpassed that, perhaps making it the most highly attended NRA convention ever. Final numbers won't be available until today, but restaurants, bars and say business boomed from the turnout. |

This is a story from Jan. 06' about a bill that would have 'allowed' students to carry at Virginia Universities.
"In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities."
I guess the shooter must not have read the violence prevention policy.
Ed.: Last year, this bill died. Today, the students died. We cannot permit these 'defenseless victim slaughter zones' to persist. |

Tragically, that's how stupid these mindless sycophants truly are. They don't care about safety. They care about the illusion of safety. And good job to our elected officials for refusing to allow us to exercise our constitutional right to self-defense.
Contact Larry Hincker, the spokesman at Virginia Tech and let him know how glad you are to "feel safe", knowing that you've been disarmed by your elected officials. Thanks a mint, Larry! You're a peach!
You can email Larry Hincker at [email protected], or call him at (540) 231-5396. |
