PA: Mention of Mass Stabbing Curiously Missing From Obama's Pennsylvania Speech

Yesterday President Obama gave a speech in Oakdale, Pa., with V.P. Joe Biden about skill training. Last week, just thirty miles away in Murrysville, a student went on a mass stabbing rampage at Franklin Regional High School. Twenty people were severely injured in the incident, making it one of the worst mass stabbing events in U.S. history. But despite being close to the scene of the tragic and horrifying event, Obama failed to mention the incident during his nearly 30 minute long remarks. I have a feeling if there had been a recent tragedy that involved a gun at a school near the location of an Obama speech, we'd be hearing all about it. Apparently, 20 people being stabbed isn't politically expedient enough for the White House. |

Flat on his belly in a sniper position, wearing a baseball cap and a flak jacket, a protester aimed his semi-automatic rifle from the edge of an overpass and waited as a crowd below stood its ground against U.S. federal agents in the Nevada desert. ... Citing public safety, the BLM retreated, suspending its operation and even handing back cattle it had already seized. No shots were fired during the stand-off, which Bundy's triumphant supporters swiftly dubbed the "Battle of Bunkerville," but the government's decision to withdraw in the face of armed resistance has alarmed some who worry that it has set a dangerous precedent and emboldened militia groups. |

Yesterday's column on problems with the Glock 42 produced another blizzard of correspondence.
I don't get the feeling that any of the folks sending me email are anti-Glock - far from it. Most say they own at least one or two other models, in addition to the G42, and that they really value the brand. |

Missouri lawmakers included similar language in its Second Amendment Preservation Act to disincentivize state or local law enforcement officers from accepting federal deputization for the purpose of enforcing federal gun laws. Under the law, any person who enforces federal gun laws would be ineligible for employment as a law enforcement officer in Missouri. |

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrissey says his office has filed motions to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the City of Charleston concerning a state law that seeks to ensure firearm laws are applied uniformly across the state.
According to a press release sent out Thursday, "The City of Charleston's lawsuit should be dismissed because the City did not sue anyone. Instead, the City asks the Circuit Court judge to render an opinion on the "validity" and "construction" of the law, which passed by overwhelming, bipartisan majorities of the Legislature and was signed by the Governor."
The AG's Office says the request violates basic court rules. |

Indianas unpredictable and unjustifiable approach to home rule has prompted the Indianapolis City-County Council to defeat a proposed ordinance for the worst reason possible: fear of being sued. Never mind whats right and wrong, lets just stay out of court!
...
But there is a provision in the Indiana code, enacted in 2011, under which state law pre-empts all local restrictions. Cities and counties, for example, cant pass ordinances keeping guns out of parks because thats not a part of the state law. |

That's when things went sideways. Someone jumped behind the wheel of the truck and moves towards the group.
Someone yells out "Watch out bro!" Then a witness pulls out a pistol and fires one shot at the windshield. Some more words were exchanged before the driver of the truck peeled out of the parking lot. Look closely at the video and you'll see the guy who fired. He's wearing a white hat and black clothing.
Police tracked the pickup over to Portland where they discovered the driver had been shot in one hand.
Back at the Stripes store, police released the shooter because he has a concealed handgun permit and officers felt he was acting in self-defense. |

It's called the "bring your gun to a riot" bill. Sheriffs hate it but the National Rifle Association wants it. Guess which side 14 Florida House members from Tampa Bay chose? They stood with the NRA instead of law enforcement and voted to let almost anyone secretly carry a gun during hurricane evacuations and civil disturbances. Their answer to stressful or violent situations is more guns. That is a reckless vote that erodes public safety, and the Senate should protect Floridians and reject this wild west approach. |

Gov. Jan Brewer signed legislation Wednesday to overrule any local laws that bar people from using firearms on private lands that are not open to the public.
HB2483 was pushed by the National Rifle Association. Lobbyist Todd Rathner said his organization sees it as an extension of the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
A right that you cant exercise by shooting is not a right, he said, comparing it to a First Amendment right to own a typewriter without the ability to publish what has been written.
Rathner said the measure has some built-in protections, including a prohibition against firing a weapon within a quarter mile of an occupied structure, at least not without the building owners permission. |

One Iowa father is speaking out against a state gun law after he and his daughter were asked to leave a gun range this past weekend because his daughter was too young to use a handgun.
Nathan Gibson told The Des Moines Register that he had weekend range trips with both of his girls ages eight and 10 nearly every weekend for the past several years. But after attention has been called to a state law that has long laid rather dormant, Gibsons weekend gun time with his girls has come to an end because, according to the law, no youth under the age of 14 is allowed to shoot a handgun, even with adult supervision. |

Demand for .22-calibre ammunition for rifles and handguns is so high that most metro Atlanta retailers have run out.
At Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, sales are limited to one box per customer per day.
"If we get a pallet, that used to last two months," said Adventure Outdoors General Manager Eric Wallace. "Now that will last two weeks, even at the one-box-per-customer limit."
The ammunition is cheap compared to other calibres, and it's popular with a growing number of new shooters. |

Moreover, when the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights were written, the disparity in firepower between the government and the people was minimal. The weapons available to each side which were mainly pistols and rifles were similar. But in the two centuries that have elapsed, the numerous armed agencies of the government have acquired and amassed heavy weapons with high technology that are prohibited or unavailable to the public.
There are those wanting to curtail or eliminate the Second Amendment. History, as well as recent events near the Bundy Ranch in Clark County, Nevada, show that we should expand it. |

Hand over your email address to a political campaign, and typically all you can expect in return is an endless stream of solicitations for money.
But one supporter of Greg Brophy, a state senator who ran for governor in Colorado, got something else: a Smith & Wesson M&P15 rifle.
It was the top prize in Greg Brophys Gun Club Giveaway, an online contest last month in which people handed over personal information that is the currency of modern political campaigns first and last names, email addresses and phone numbers and in exchange, one lucky winner would get the gun. |

For the second time in a week, Detroit police are investigating a deadly shooting that was sparked by a home invasion. The incident happened early Thursday morning in the 15000 block of Glastonbury, near Grand River Avenue and the Southfield Freeway on the citys west side.
What we know is that there were three of them, there was a driver and two suspects, Sgt. Michael Woody said.
According to police, two men broke into the home through a window. The homeowner opened fire after confronting the men, who reportedly returned fire. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, who has lived in the neighborhood for eight years, said she was startled by a flurry of gunfire that was so loud, it sounded like out of Beirut. |

Modern debates about the meaning of the Second Amendment have focused on whether it protects a private right of individuals to keep and bear arms or a right that can be exercised only through militia organizations like the National Guard. This question, however, was apparently never even raised until long after the Bill of Rights was adopted. Early discussions took the basic meaning of the amendment for granted and focused instead on whether it added anything significant to the original Constitution. The debate later shifted because of changes in the Constitution and in constitutional law and because legislatures began to regulate firearms in ways undreamed of in our early history. |

The Arizona House of Representatives has given final approval to a bill that would allow law enforcement to charge someone who wrests a gun from another person's hands with aggravated assault.
Proponents say House Bill 2338 is a preventative measure in case a criminal were to take the gun of someone using it in self-defense. It would allow authorities to charge a person who's accused of wresting a gun away from someone else with aggravated assault. Doing so is already a felony offense. |

SB527, the Wisconsin range protection legislation, passed the legislature with wide margins, 19 13 in the Senate and 65-35 in the House. It was signed into law by Governor Walker on 9 April, 2014.
