On April 17 Rolling Stone columnist Andrew Leahey tried to counter pushback on Tim McGraws Sandy Hook Promise gun control fundraiser by mocking Breitbart Newss reporting and then downplaying the groups anti-gun agenda.
After covering Billy Curringtons pullout from the event, Leahey described McGraw as a principled gun rights advocate who was standing his ground against a hate mob. One champion of the Second Amendment who isnt backing down is McGraw, a gun owner and recreational hunter, he wrote. |

Students want to bring their handguns to my English composition class.
Not for show and tell, mind you. In fact, they want to keep them hidden in their waistbands or backpacks, in legal accordance with the concealed-carry permits issued to them by the state of Florida.
I haven't discussed this with them yet. But I assumed that it's what many are angling for, or at least those who belong to Students for Concealed Carry at Florida SouthWestern State College. |

Certainly, we can all agree governments should not be "changed for light and transient causes." But if, per America's founding document, it is our right and duty to cast off tyrannical governments, how does Rosenthal think that happens? Pillow fights? The founders's own example suggests a lot of guns would be involved. And the fact that these same men would later declare firearm ownership a God-given right should be an unsubtle clue to help connect the dots here. |

The schism among conservatives over Colorado's gun laws widened this week when four House Republicans formed a secret pact and pushed for a procedural move that exposes five members to potentially tough primaries in 2016.
"It was a clever idea, but it put some people in a very bad position," said Rep. Don Coram, R-Montrose. "We're going to be talking about this until the end of the session."
The move Wednesday on the House floor was the latest battle over Senate Bill 175, which would have repealed the 15-round limit on ammunition magazines that Democrats imposed in 2013. |

The fight to let Oklahomans carry their guns to the Norman Music Festival is over.
A judge decided that licensed gun owners will be allowed to carry their guns to this years music festival without fear of being asked to leave, or being ticketed, and that the city of Norman cannot enforce their "no guns" request.
"Its really disappointing," Peaches Amspacher said. "I worry about whats going to happen to the Norman Music Fest now.
Amspacher came to the courthouse Friday in hopes that she would see guns banned from the Norman Music Festival. But now, for the first time in seven years, she says she wont be going. |

The state House on Friday gave preliminary approval to the licensed open carry of handguns, all but guaranteeing the controversial measures passage into law.
The vote marked the culmination of months of momentum behind the open carry movement, fueled in part by a host of Tea Party candidates who won spots in both houses of the Legislature promising to expand Second Amendment rights beyond the states 20-year-old concealed carry law. |

Texas moved closer Friday to becoming the most populous state to allow licensed open carry of handguns after Republicans pushed through a key vote in the state House.
The 96-35 preliminary vote in favor of the measure sets up a final vote expected next week. The state Senate has already approved a similar version, and while some work remains to work out any differences, the chambers could send the measure to Gov. Greg Abbott, who has pledged to sign an open carry bill. |

Outfitting Harris County peace officers with body cameras could generate colossal amounts of data: 8 petabytes in 90 days, by some estimates -- or the equivalent of 1,600,000 feature films.
Storing all of it is just one of the host of tricky issues county officials and law enforcement are working through as they sort out the logistics of equipping local officers with body cameras. |

Henry Repeating Arms is now making five Mares Leg lever-action pistols. These leverguns are offered in .22 Long Rifle, .22 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. Patterned after Steve McQueens own, these Mares Legs will have no problems drawing a crowd.
A Mares Leg is a short lever-action gun that sits between revolvers and carbines in terms of performance and capacity. Theyre a bit of a compromise on all fronts, with one exception: coolness. Theres no doubting the cool factor of Mares Legs and they appeal to shooters of all stripes. You can be a black rifle type and still want a Mares Leg their levels of fun transcend barriers. |

A national gun rights group is throwing its support behind recall efforts aimed at three Oregon lawmakers who were targeted in part because of support for a controversial gun sale background check measure.
Alan Gottlieb of Bellevue, Wash., chairman of Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, said Friday that prospective recall petitions filed against state Reps. Val Hoyle of Eugene, Susan McLain of Forest Grove and state Sen. Chuck Riley of Hillsboro, were a good reminder that gun owners are voters too.
Were not going to campaign for or against a specific individual, Gottlieb said. But we do support the right of the citizens to remove from office anyone who acts to undermine their rights." |

Its dj vu all over again for state lawmakers who support a gun control measure, this time in Oregon where yesterday the Portland Oregonian reported that two state representatives and a state senator all Democrats are now facing recall in an effort reminiscent of what happened two years ago in Colorado.
Of particular significance is that one of the trio, freshman Sen. Chuck Riley of Hillsboro was elected with the reported help of anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloombergs Everytown for Gun Safety. He eked out a win over incumbent Republican Sen. Bruce Starr last November, according to Guns.com.

On this day in the US, around thirty people will be killed with a gun, not including suicides. Many more will be wounded. I can safely predict this number because that is the average number of homicides committed with a gun in the US each day. Such killings have become so routine that they are barely noticed even in the local news. Only when a significant number of people are murdered, particularly when they include children or are killed randomly, is the event considered newsworthy.
Yet efforts to regulate the possession of guns in the US are consistently defeated.

Two days after Oregon senators passed legislation expanding background checks to cover most private gun sales, lawmakers heard testimony Thursday on a proposal making it a crime for adults to endanger minors by letting them gain unsupervised access to firearms.
Under the measure, gun owners who keep firearms on their premises could be punished with up to a year in prison or a $6,250 fine if a minor gets access to a gun that wasnt locked up. There are exceptions for firearms that are stolen and for temporary transfers done while hunting or for target practice. |

The Catholic University of Americas Student Association General Assembly (SAGA) passed a resolution to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry guns on campus for self-defense, but administrators demand they remain unarmed.
Delegate Matt Hanrahan grew up 15 minutes from the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, and he says the attack taught him that gun-free campuses are really just targets for people who do not want their victims firing back. |

A Cleveland County judge issued a temporary restraining order Friday against the city of Norman and the Norman Music Alliance, prohibiting enforcement of a gun ban at the upcoming Norman Music Festival.
District Judge Thad Balkman ruled in favor of the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association, whose attorney argued that banning licensed gun carriers from carrying guns to the festival was a violation of both state and federal law and an infringement on peoples constitutional rights.

The Senate Finance and Claims Committee voted 16-3 to amend House Bill 140, which is the FWP licensing bill, to include Senate Bill 395, which would create a mentor hunting license for family or designated individuals to take kids hunting starting at age 10.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wants to know why so many of our nations veterans are being barred from exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms.
In a letter dated this week to Attorney General Eric Holder, Grassley outlines his concerns that far too many veterans are being denied the right to purchase or own weapons due to an overly broad reporting policy adopted by the Department of Veterans Administration (VA). The senator noted that 99.3 percent of all names reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in mental defective category were supplied by the VA, according to a 2012 Congressional Research Service Report. |
