Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz was taken to task by a newspaper in his own state this week for his attempt to block President Joe Biden's latest crackdown on "ghost guns." On Monday, the Houston Chronicle editorial board criticized Cruz for promoting "Second-Amendment absolutism" amid a rise in U.S. gun violence. The editorial comes after Cruz and three other Republican senators announced last week that they would attempt to stop Biden's latest gun control measure, which is meant to stop Americans from purchasing so-called "ghost guns," unlicensed firearm kits that can be self-assembled at home.

On April 11, the Biden Administration announced the finalization of a new firearm rule, and a new nominee to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The rule, ATF 2021R-05, is substantially the same as when it was proposed last May. There has been a fair bit of confusion about what the rule does because it changes a number of core definitions in federal law (including the definition of firearm). Here are the basics of what the rule does and does not do.

Here we are back covering the Burnside Carbine which we previously went through briefly on Photo of the Day.

Swiss firearms designer Charles Gabriel Petter, who learned the up-close and personal side of weapons in action while an officer in the French Foreign Legion during the Great War, was a cultivated polyglot who moved freely across Western Europe in the 1920s and 30s. After a decade with the Lewis Arms Company, he perfected a series of modifications and improvements to single-action self-loading pistols, taking cues from the even-then famous Browning locked-breech system.

Trust us, they said. They shouted it from the podium and from the headlines. New York politicians said they would take care of us. They said we dont need to have a firearm and protect ourselves or the people we love. They said that if we voted for them then they keep us safe when were in public. All they needed was a little more gun control and then well finally be safe.

A suspect in the wild South Carolina mall shooting over the Easter weekend that left 14 people injured is asserting he fired in self-defense, according to published reports, and was granted bond of $25,000 with a condition he wear an ankle bracelet.

According to Fox News, 22-year-old Jewayne Price will be able to go to and from work under conditions set by the court. Presently, the only charge against Price is unlawful carrying of a pistol, apparently because he is not licensed to carry concealed.

Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh on Friday defended the constitutionality of the states ban on semiautomatic assault-style weapons against a U.S. Supreme Court challenge by gun rights advocates who say the prohibition violates the right to keep and bear arms. In papers filed with the justices, Frosh urged the high court to deny the advocates request that it review and overturn a lower court ruling upholding the ban as promoting the states goal of ensuring public safety without encroaching on what the Supreme Court has held to be the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to possess handguns in their home for self-defense.

The .480 Ruger, released in 2003, is a unique big bore caliber designed to be used in a large, high-power revolver. In its standard factory load, the .480 Ruger features a .475-inch diameter bullet that weighs 325 grain (gr). Although the bullets diameter is 0.475 inch, it was deemed the .480 Ruger to avoid confusion with the much higher-pressured (and parent case) .475 Linebaugh.

President Trumps endorsement of Doctor Oz for the United States Senate seat in Pennsylvania being vacated by Pat Toomey has some important lessons for Second Amendment supporters. As noted earlier, taking these lessons to heart can probably help us better protect the Second Amendment in future legislative and political battles.

In 2004, the Hornady Manufacturing Company introduced the .17 Hornady Mach 2 (.17 HM2) using a .22 LR case that had been extended and necked down. This cartridge should not be mistaken for the Hornady .17 HMR, which is based on the case of a .22 Magnum. The .17 HM2 is designed to take varmint at 100 yards or more, and performs the task admirably. It develops a similar amount of energy as the .22 LR in foot pounds, but it travels at a higher velocity resulting in a flatter bullet trajectory.

My friend Thomas invitation to join him on an April turkey hunt in Texas sounded almost like an apology. Hey, man, he said, I know turkey isnt your thing, and I understand if you dont want to go. Youd have to fly to Little Rock, and then wed drive 500 miles to the eastern Panhandle. He added that the outfitter charges $1,200 for three days and lets you shoot only two birds instead of the states limit of four. But hes got a pile of birds and Ive been going for forever and I just thought Id ask.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government that is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. JAMES MADISON
