Its been a tough time for shooting sports enthusiasts, what with the Parkland, Florida shootings and a national push to put more controls on guns in an important effort to make schools safer.

So, the success of two mid-Michigan teens Sara Nevin, 17, of Holt, and Lillian Warren, 14, of Perry who are competing in the National Junior Olympics Shooting Championships in Colorado is breeding excitement at Michigan State Universitys Demmer Center. Thats where the young women train.

Its really a big, big deal. It really is, said Michael Galella, manager of the shooting center.

Demmer is one of 16 Olympic Training Centers for shooting sports in the country and the only one in Michigan.

Jerry Patterson brings his gun to church every Sunday. As he listens to the sermons at Bethany Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, he hardly thinks about the Ruger 9mm handgun resting comfortably in a small holster inside his belt. To him, its just like his wallet: something he doesnt leave the house without.

The NRA sees a bleak Hobbesian world. So why does it want to arm individuals with guns?

Doing so is difficult, however, because Hobbes argues that in the absence of government, individuals will frequently attack and kill one another in what he terms the war of all against all. It is not that he thinks humans are evil; far from it. But he argues that our natural tendencies vanity, competitiveness, fearfulness and glory-seeking will inevitably lead us to fight, and frequently kill, each other. As a result, without government, human life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Faced with such a bleak existence, Hobbes argues that there is only one solution to the problem of a violent and chaotic world: a government with absolute power.

Wednesday morning, the second day of a conference that gathered hundreds of Michigan education officials in Detroit, began with a 6:30 a.m. workshop that taught women who manage school budgets how to dish out an open-handed slap.

And an effective kick.

Yes, school finance officials are learning self-defense. Call it a sign of the times.

The suit filed Thursday by the advocacy group Guns Save Life and Deerfield resident John William Wombacher III challenges the Deerfield ordinance that was approved April 2 on numerous grounds.

The National Rifle Associations Institute for Legislative Action issued a news release Thursday saying it was supporting the Guns Save Life lawsuit.

The suit contends, among other things, that a provision instructing the Deerfield chief of police to confiscate and destroy assault weapons and large-capacity magazines violates a guarantee under the Illinois Constitution that private property shall not be taken for public use without just compensation.

The stand your ground laws are controversial because they remove the notion that citizens should flee a potentially dangerous situation if they fear for their lives. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the laws should more appropriately be nicknamed the shoot first law. The gun proposal is especially controversial because of the prevalence of racial profiling in America.

When one thinks of a single action revolver, usually the same thought comes to mind, two gunslingers all duded up in cowboy hats with low slung holsters drawing on each other from a paced out difference. Then a blinding flash from both guns, and in most cases, the good guy walks away while the bad guy is lying face down in the dust.

What is the future of the Second Amendment?

That question was at the heart of a discussion Thursday at the SIU School of Law.

The school hosted four panel discussions, all focused on gun rights.

It comes 10 years after a the Supreme Court ruled on District of Columbia v. Heller, a case that determined people can have a gun for reasons other than being in a militia, including self defense at home.

Slide Fire Solutions, the company that invented and manufactures bump stocks, announced Tuesday it is shutting down production.

A notice on its website reads, "On Sunday, May 20, 2018 at midnight CST, Slide Fire will cease taking orders for its products and shut down its website."

Bump stocks are modification devices used to accelerate a gun's shooting rate so it fires like an automatic weapon almost as fast as machine guns, which are largely outlawed.

Guns dont kill people people do. More people are killed by cars than guns, so why not ban cars? The Second Amendment insures our liberty to own guns which you need for self-defense and protection from tyranny. In my opinion, all of these statements demonstrate defective thinking and come from the mouths of fools. Let's examine each in turn.

April 24 will be a busy day with 19 gun bills making the agenda for what figures to be an all-night affair at the Statehouse. Gun owners have had a strong presence at the Capitol this session, and its important that we continue to come out in force.

It was 4 a.m. on December 12 of last year when the FBI came for Rakem Balogun.

Balogun is a black Dallas-area activist with the Guerilla Mainframe organization. Hes also the co-founder of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, which aims to educate and arm black people in the U.S. and abroad.

The Feds had a warrant for his .38 handgun, but that wasnt really what they were after. The government had been following Balogun in ways both real and virtual for the prior two-and-a-half years. They saw coverage of an open-carry demonstration in 2015, and didnt like what they claimed Balogun was chanting (The only good pig is a pig thats dead, and Oink oink, bang bang, according to press reports).

The letter from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, representing 18,000 police departments across the United States, and Boston Police Commissioner William Evans targets the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which passed the House in December and is now assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In Iowa, criminals who use imitation guns are not treated as harshly under the law as are criminals who use real guns. It seems an obvious policy decision. When criminals use imitation guns, the vast majority of the risk is on the criminal. They are more likely to be shot. They are not able to shoot back. They are relying on the power of bluff and image to coerce people who they are attempting to victimize. It seems like a win-win for law and order.

According to USA Today, the move came after Wells Fargo declined to heed the unions recommendation that it forgo its lending relationship with the gun lobbying group or impose new restriction on firearms manufacturers, in wake of the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.
