Could warmer weather lead to more crime? Police say with more people outside, the potential to become a victim increases. Some area stores are even having trouble keeping self-defense tools like pepper spray in stock.

"Don't get caught in your own little world. Be aware of what's going on around you, who's around, the movements of other people," advised Officer Craig Allen, of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s crime prevention unit.

...

"Unfortunately, we see a lot of women that come in a month too late,” Rob said. “They come in and they want some security back in their life since they lost it."

It's hard to say exactly how long it had been since Claire Davis last fired a loaded gun. But the Raleigh retiree guesses she hadn't pulled a trigger at least since Jimmy Carter occupied the White House and AMC Gremlins roamed the highways.

By lunchtime Sunday, the sharpshooting grandmother demonstrated an impressive proficiency in skeet shooting. Developed to practice hunting game birds on the wing, skeet shooting requires instant reflexes to shoot a quickly moving target.

If you notice students sporting empty holsters on the University of Tennessee campus today, it's likely the sign of a protest, not a lost handgun.

The students wearing the empty holsters are protesting state laws and campus policies that prohibit concealed handgun carry license holders from carrying on campus, said Nathan Robinson, a UT senior.

The protest is a peaceful, nationwide protest by a nonpartisan organization called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, he said.

It's the largest gun show ever held in New York State. More than 800 exhibits and displays are on hand at the Gun Show and Sale at the fairgrounds. Collectors and dealers from all across the country and Canada showcased the finest of their weaponry, from pre-revolutionary war relics to present day military arms. As is tradition, buyers had a chance to barter and trade products. Many say they collect guns because they value the history and technology of the weapons and most importantly, because they find the hobby very enjoyable.

This may help columnists and others make up their minds about teachers and students on campus with concealed [weapon] permits.
WVUs police chief recently said he saw no value to trained people with weapons. He must have never talked to someone who has lost a loved one at a campus shooting, like Virginia Tech.
It is all about trained people, lots of them vets who are now students (I have given classes to some) who now have permits from the state to carry. Trained teachers and trained students could have helped cut down on the number of people who were shot [at Virginia Tech], if they had the means to do so.

"PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti Hunger bashed in the front gate of Haiti's presidential palace. Hunger poured onto the streets, burning tires and taking on soldiers and the police. Hunger sent the country's prime minister packing." Oh, really, Marc Lacey? Really, New York Times? Hunger did this? The inanimate sensation created when one's liver requires more glucose "bashed in" a gate and burned tires? Oh, sorry, are you trying to be poetic? A little fancy with the language? Great work! Your stupid lede made us too annoyed to read what is probably a very important and serious story about poverty.

COMMENT: In The New York Times, hunger burns tires and takes on soldiers and the police -- and guns kill people.

An off-duty New York City police detective's gun accidentally went off yesterday inside Peekskill Middle School and the bullet shattered, with a tiny piece striking a woman by the pool.
The detective and the woman were among about 30 adults and children attending Saturday swimming lessons at the pool. She was treated at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for a wound in her right leg and released, Peekskill Police Chief Eugene Tumulo said last night.

"When (the detective) went to pick up his stuff to leave, the gun was on the bench," Tumulo said. "It fell and discharged. It looks like this was an accidental discharge."

No weapon is more important to tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan than the carbine rifle. And for well over a decade, the military has relied on one company, Colt Defense of Hartford, Conn., to make the M4s they trust with their lives.

Now, as Congress considers spending millions more on the guns, this exclusive arrangement is being criticized as a bad deal for American forces as well as taxpayers, according to interviews and research conducted by The Associated Press.

"What we have is a fat contractor in Colt who's gotten very rich off our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," says Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

U.S. military officials don't agree. They call the M4 an excellent carbine.

Submitter's note: A scapegoat for bad TSA/Homeland Security rules that forces pilots to repeatedly handle firearms on the flight deck, or fired because he violated USAir policy?

__________

A US Airways pilot who officials say accidentally fired his handgun in the cockpit during a flight will be fired, a spokesman for a flight officers group said.

The airline has begun the termination process for Capt. James Langenhahn, said Mike Karn, vice president of the Federal Flight Deck Officers Association.

Karn said his group, which represents pilots who are federally trained and allowed to carry firearms on flights, will fight the termination.

"This was accidental not intentional," Karn said. "This is not the way to treat a long-term pilot."

Be warned, the anti-gun forces are at it again and a number of bills that could severely restrict or deny your constitutional rights to own a gun are heading for the New York Senate. We dont need more restrictive gun laws, the number of them on the books at present would do the job if they were strictly enforced.

A proposal to ban the use of lead shot by small-game hunters on public lands in Minnesota's agricultural region was shot down last week -- by the bill's chief author. Four days after meeting with officials from Federal Cartridge Corp. and the National Rifle Association -- which opposed the restrictions -- Sen. Satveer Chaudhary, DFL-Fridley, killed the provision. The restriction, proposed by the DNR, would have been phased in beginning in 2011.

Ed.: This is a follow-up to an apparent abuse of authority story I posted last week.

--

A few days ago a story appeared here about a group of kids who got together for a silly ten minute dance at the Jefferson Memorial. One of them was arrested, and she needs help to afford some decent legal council. I know that lots of people ask for your money, and try to guilt you out of it in numerous ways. Well, that's not my thing.

Instead I hope you'll go back a few days and look up that story again. If it still makes you mad, maybe it's worth $20 to make the DC police think twice about harassing all of us. That's all I'm saying.

...

And thank you.

Pennsylvania sportsmen aren't "bitter" about their guns and balk at what they call Sen. Barack Obama's double-talk in courting their support. In a state that boasts one of the country's highest per capita rates of membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA), Mr. Obama's stance that Second Amendment gun rights are compatible with new tough gun laws falls flat. And it didn't help when he said the state's "bitter" small-town voters hurt by the economy were not supporting him because they "cling" to religion, guns and anti-immigrant views. "It just tells me he is anti-gun," said Debbie Schultz, owner of Schultz's Sportsmens Stop in Apollo, Pa., about 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

ELIZABETH, W.Va. (AP) - A Wirt County Middle School principal who left two hunting rifles in a vehicle parked on school property has been terminated.

The county school board voted 3-2 late Wednesday to dismiss James D. Hoover.

Superintendent Daniel Metz declined to comment on the decision.

Hoover was charged in October with two counts of unlawfully and feloniously possessing deadly weapons on educational facilities.

But Wirt County Circuit Court Judge Robert Waters later dismissed the charges, saying the case fell under an exception in state law involving unloaded weapons in locked vehicles.

Wirt County Schools Superintendent Daniel Metz this morning said he could not comment on the boards decision because of the possibility of an appeal.

Barack Obamas presidential campaign has worked to assure uneasy gun owners that he believes the Constitution protects their rights and that he doesnt want to take away their guns.

But before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.

The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans. And it paid to support a book called Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.
