A pro gun-rights rally is planned for Redmond Saturday. Sharon Preston, with the Oregon Firearms Federation, says its part of a greater effort to show support for the Second Amendment. "Its called #WeSupport2," she tells KBND News, "Its put on by the Oregonians for Firearms Education; its also being put on by women all over the state. At the same time, youre going to have one in Sandy, Eugene, Medford, Portland, Salem, Pendleton, and of course, Redmond."

There are plenty of things that make the "Stand Your Ground" bill going through the Ohio House of Representatives controversial -- one of them is how it addresses who should be responsible for proving self-defense when it is claimed in a court case.
The bill seeks to shift the burden of proving if self-defense was justified or not from the defendant to the state.
But before we can dig into that, we have to clarify a few things. |

Pepper spray, which is also known as OC spray because it contains oleoresin capsicum (OC), an oil derived from hot peppers, is a non-lethal weapon. When used on an assailant, it will inflame the eyes, nasal passages and respiratory tract temporarily to distract someone for the user to get away. It causes excessive tears, burning pain, difficulty breathing and temporary blindness.
Genesee County Undersheriff Chris Swanson said, If a citizen has the desire, the training and the mindset to carry personal protection gear, they should be allowed to do so under the law. |

A lawsuit was filed on Wednesday that challenges Vermonts new law that limits the bullet capacity of gun magazines.
The Vermont Federation of Sportsmans Clubs is among a handful of plaintiffs asking the court to declare the new limits unconstitutional. The federation claims 52 individual clubs in the state are part of its membership. The Caledonia Forest & Stream Club in St. Johnsbury is among them.
President of the local club, Arthur Wood, of Lyndonville, said the clubs governing body does not take an official position on the new regulations, but some money has been approved to assist the federation with the legal bills. |

On Monday, the Louisiana Senate could consider Senate Bill 491 which would prohibit the sale, manufacture, purchase, possession, or transfer of bump stocks and other rapid-fire devices. The broad and overreaching language could potentially criminalize firearm modifications such as competition triggers, and ergonomic changes that are commonly done by law-abiding gun owners to make their firearms more suitable for self-defense, competition, hunting, or even overcoming disability. Please contact your state Senator at 225-342-2040 and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 491 when it comes up for a vote. |

Sheriff Wayne Ivey has long encouraged in videos and in person local citizens getting concealed weapons permits and training.
In recent weeks, however, calls from elected officials have grown even louder and more sweeping in their scope of how to put armed civilians in places once off-limits for guns.
The Brevard County Commission is now considering allowing county employees with concealed-carry permits to bring guns to work, while the Brevard School Board appears poised to approve a controversial marshal program that would train principals, deans and custodians as special deputies and allow them to carry guns into the schools. |

Two fatal shootings that happened within two weeks of each other in Troy are being treated as potential self-defense shootings according to District Attorney Tom Anderson.
There appears to be substantial evidence that this conduct may well have been defensible conduct, Anderson said. It would render these persons immune from prosecution, so there needs to be a complete, finalized case reviewed and presented to a grand jury before any decision to charge is made. |

Prominent Kansas Republicans and gun-rights lobbyists rallied Friday at the Kansas Statehouse to offer a rebuttal to demands for firearms restrictions in wake of U.S. school shootings and to express support for bills in the Legislature lowering the concealed-carry age limit and making it easier to arm classroom teachers.
Secretary of State Kris Kobach, top GOP leaders of the House and Senate and an official with the National Rifle Association urged about 200 people to raise their voices in defense of the constitutional right to bear arms. |

It was just after 1 a.m. Dec. 15 when 18-year-old Devon Simons walked into the Kum & Go, pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the clerk and demanded cigarettes and cash.
He left with 13 packs and nearly $1,000.
In under an hour, Sioux City Police officers apprehended Simons at another Kum & Go. Upon his capture, police found he had used a BB gun, not a real firearm, to hold up the clerk. |

I wish to counter a few points previously made in this forum. According to a current Gallup Poll, between 40 percent and 50 percent of households in the United States own at least one gun. It should be noted that this number has gone down slightly in the last decade. At the same time, gun-related deaths have also declined. Based on these numbers, it does not point to guns as the sole cause for the rash of shootings highlighted in the news.
Preventable deaths in our society are a tragedy. However, if we remove suicides, which may not be prevented by current or proposed new gun laws, then gun deaths are not even in the top 20 causes of preventable deaths. |

Another gun-related measure could make the Deschutes County ballot in November, if supports gather enough petition signatures.
NewsChannel 21 spoke Friday with one of the Redmond men who filed an initiative called the Second Amendment Preservation Ordinance. It would leave laws regulating semi-automatic weapons, ammunition and accessories like bump stocks up to the sheriff to decide whether they are considered constitutional and thus whether or not to enforce them within county limits. |

A pro-gun rally on the south side of the Kansas Statehouse drew about 200 people to Topeka on Friday morning as students around the country walked out of class to protest gun violence.
The rally was organized by the Kansas State Rifle Association and the NRA.
Speakers repeated familiar slogans, arguing that "only a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun," that progressives want to repeal the Second Amendment, and that if people are old enough to serve in the military, they're old enough to conceal carry. |

The type of firearms available at the time the Founding Fathers were creating our Constitution and Bill of Rights were the most modern for their time just as the horse and buggy was the most modern form of transportation available. Mr. Miller, do you really believe that our Founding Fathers, as brilliant as they were to create such documents as the Constitution and Bill Rights, believed that we would be using muskets and buggies forever? Of course not. |

Notwithstanding Jefferson, and knowing that the Civil War left 600,000 dead and the Souths economy destroyed, do we really want offensive weapons in the hands of troubled individuals who keep killing innocent people on the slim chance that they may need that weapon to kill a tyrant?
We need to change the Second Amendment to allow only defensive smart guns that would allow their users to do everything one can lawfully do with their present guns. |

The NRA has become a promotional tool of gun manufacturers. Their business plan calling for the selling of more guns is not the way to protect schoolkids and teachers as they study, learn and grow. In less than five minutes, eight boys and 12 girls, all either 6 or 7 years old, along with six adults died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. The NRA tells us that in the first 30 seconds of confusion some adult can recognize a mass shooter is in the building, unlock a safe storing a gun, find the bullets stored in a different location, run out into the hall and shoot the gunman dead. That would make a great ad for gun manufacturers but is far removed from reality. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46 |
