Police say an 80-year-old Fairmont man had reason to defend himself while fatally shooting an alleged home invader Tuesday morning.
Police Chief Steve Shine with the Fairmont Police Department said around 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to 707 Gaston Ave. for a reported shooting. Shine said the person who reported the shooting to 911 stated he had shot someone trying to rob him.
When officers arrived on scene, they found a man dressed in dark clothes lying in the middle of the road with at least two apparent gunshot wounds to his head and neck area, according to Shine. He said another man was found shot in the lower torso across the street from the callers residence. |

The Tennessee House has voted 69-24 to allow faculty and staff at public colleges and universities to be armed for self-defense.
The April 20 vote came one day after the Tennessee Senate passed the campus carry legislation by a vote of 28-5.
The legislation allows those with a concealed carry permit to carry concealed on campus in the same way that they carry concealed throughout the rest of their day. However, it does prohibit bringing the weapons to stadiums or gymnasiums, hospitals, school-sponsored events or meetings where disciplinary or tenure issues are being discussed. |

Personal safety is one of the most-cited reasons to buy a gun. But a new study challenges the assumption that firearms are often used for self defense.
The Violence Policy Center found that a very small proportion of firearm homicides can be attributed to so-called justifiable situations. Just one gun death per every 32 criminal gun killings happened in self-defense scenarios in 2012, the most recent year for which data is available. And, while gun advocates argue that they want a firearm handy in their house in case of an intruder, just 0.1 percent of the justified attacks involved property crimes. |

Groups both for and against a measure to allow college students to carry concealed guns onto Georgias public campuses are increasing their efforts to influence Gov. Nathan Deal, who must decide by May 3 whether House Bill 859 should become law.
Gun control advocates this week launched a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #VetoHB859 to urge Deal to veto the legislation. Many of those tweeting appear to be college students or faculty who expressed concerns over the legislations intent to allow guns into college classrooms and common areas, including on-campus daycare centers. |

A homeowner in south Lubbock used a 6-foot construction level to keep a burglar on the scene until police could arrive, according to officials.
Just before 5 a.m. Thursday, the homeowners were awakened by the sounds of their dogs barking. the victim went outside to his driveway to investigate and found his garage door had been forced open and a dirt bike had been moved halfway out of the garage.
...
The victim then picked up the 6-foot construction level to keep the burglar on the scene. The burglar ignored the victim's orders to stay still and advanced on the victim, police said.
That is when the victim hit the suspect in the face with the construction level. Officers arrived shortly after and took the suspect into custody. |

Weve observed that the ammunition drought is waningthank goodness. Joining the ramp-up of established suppliers are new domestic and offshore sources, all supplemented by healthy growth of, and interest in, handloading. Thank goodness, again. We can finally get back out to the range and not treat every cartridge like a gold nugget.
For reasons that remain a little murky, however, it seems as though were seeing more ammunition-related issues once were there. None of thesehappilyhave been serious, but it seems as though folks are treating cartridges as a commodity just a bit more than is truly wise. |

One obstacle of training is knowing how muchor littlethe firearm moves and results in missed shots or large shot placement groups on the target. Numerous factors can cause missesand a common culprit is shooter control of the firearm. The good news is that the best end to guessing how much a firearm moves whenor beforebeing shot is to install a Crimson Trace laser sight. Having a laser sight installed on any firearm gives instant feedback to the shooter during practice because the visible down range red or green dot on the target is easy to seeand understand if it moves. |

A tenant living in government-subsidized housing in Rockland is in the middle of a lawsuit with his landlord over his Second Amendment rights.
He and his neighbors say they have the right to own a gun, but building owners say otherwise.
The Park Place Apartments in Rockland have been the center of controversy over the last year.
After Harvey Lembo, a wheelchair-bound tenant, shot an intruder last summer he was told to give up his gun; that it was against apartment policy.
But since that night, neighbors say theyd feel safer with a weapon.

Voting along party lines, the Senate Thursday repealed the requirement to obtain a concealed weapons permit, although the governor says she will veto the bill as she did last year.
House Bill 582 would allow anyone who can legally own a gun to conceal a loaded weapon.
Under current law, a person may carry a loaded weapon that is visible, but a permit is required to carry it concealed.
Supporters say local law enforcement officials have used the process to delay or even block someone with a legal right to own a gun from receiving the permit. |

It has been enrolled and sent to Governor Bill Haslam. Governor Haslam promised to sign Constitutional carry if it reached his desk, six years ago. It seems likely that he will sign this bill.
The bill passed the Senate 26 to 4, the House 77 to 13. The bill follows a trend started by Wisconsin and Kansas, where people who chose to allow others to exercise their Second Amendment rights are granted immunity from civil action for any harm that may stem from that decision.
The Tennessee bill starts with the other side of that position. People who actively prevent permit holders from exercising their Second Amendment rights may be held liable for harm to the permit holders. |

When Edwin Meese served as U.S. attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, he had the opportunity to advise the president concerning his nomination of Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court. Justice Scalia went on to prove himself a stalwart defender not only of the Second Amendment, but of the plain meaning of the Constitution as a whole. Justice Scalia was probably, of all the justices in history, one of the most faithful supporters of the Constitution as it was actually written, says Meese. |

If such an encyclical follows, this is a big deal. The just war traditionwhich contains numerous doctrines morally justifying violence and war, as well as defining appropriate conduct during warhas served for the past 1500 years as the primary normative basis politicians have evoked (correctly or incorrectly) to validate their waging of war. Because the Catholic Church developed the doctrine between the 4th and 13th centuries, the just war canon has had a monopolistic influence on the way people in the West think about war and violencewhether they know it or not. |

But Norquist points out that people who go through the process of getting a concealed carry license and there are more than 13 million of them are different. The right to carry a handgun isnt just about self-defense for CHL owners, its an expression of who they are and the freedoms they want to protect.
CHL holders know that many elected Democrats obsess over guns, and especially handguns. They know that many Democrats are diligently working to restrict or take away those handguns even as many CHL holders are looking to buy more handguns and ammunition. And they know that their only hope of keeping their CHLs and their handguns is if Republicans are elected at the state and federal levels. |

Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton may have kicked a hornet's nest last night when she told a gun violence forum in Philadelphia that there are too many gunsin our homes, in our neighborhoods, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
The remarks have spread across the Internet, thanks to a YouTube video the Free Beacon posted, and they got a quick reaction from Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. In a scathing statement to the press, Gottlieb told Clinton publicly, Our guns are none of your business. |

"They don't run by themselves anymore, they run in a pack," Johnson said.
Wednesday afternoon, one person was found on the ground on Schneiter Avenue, and another was found a block away on Oleanda Avenue. Both male juveniles had been shot.
Police haven't said exactly what happened, but neighbors have heard the shooting was during a break-in.
"Sorry. It had to happen. Self defense is self defense," Johnson said.
The shooting has left neighbors hoping for more police patrols, and less violence. |

It would take a heart of stone not to sympathize with the families who lost children in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But the law is supposed to involve more namely reason and judgment.
That is what makes so disappointing a decision by a Connecticut judge to allow a lawsuit, filed by nine of those families, against a gun manufacturer to go forward. Gun makers are no more responsible for such tragedies than distillers are for drunken driving, and a 2005 federal law passed in response to mischief by state attorneys general is supposed to immunize them from such lawsuits. |

Despite an ongoing federal lawsuit claiming that the CCW rules imposed by many urban areas in California are too restrictive, San Francisco has remained resolutely anti-concealed carryin 2014, fewer than ten people had permits, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
California doesn't recognize CCW permits from other states, including Utah. So, wait, what's the point of this class for Californians again? Well, if you live in San Francisco, and you want to carry a gun, you might have to leave the state.

In simple terms, we could boil the argument down to three kinds of people: law abiding citizens, the mentally ill and criminals.
As a member of group one, I dont object to having a background check or a waiting period before buying a gun. I do, however, object to registering a gun because a list of gun owners in the wrong hands diminishes the power of having the weapon. It was much easier for the Nazis to round up the Jews because they could identify them. And President Obamas most recent legislation forcing citizens to submit fingerprints and photos to federal authorities when setting up a trust to obtain items such as silencers feels like a slippery slope. |
