"Increasingly, the agents are turning to high-tech data analysis to peer into the shadowy underworld of illegal gun selling. In this instance, the agent was struck by records of an odd buying spree: seven inexpensive, easy-to-conceal semiautomatic pistols popular with street criminals, all purchased by Garner on the same day." |

"Why does somebody need something powerful enough to shoot a potato 400 yards?" he said. "More importantly, why aren't these guns illegal?"
The answer is potato guns -also known as potato cannons or spud guns-- might be illegal. Or they might not. No one seems to know. Local police departments refused to comment, saying they hadn't seen them, didn't have a problem with them, or didn't know anything about them. A spokesman for the ATF said the agency hadn't considered the issue. |

"There's certainly a market out there for people who want guns but can't get them themselves," said Tom Ahern, a spokesman for the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
~~The problem isn't accessibility to gun sales. The problem is that criminals are on the street to buy and use them. |
