"E.J. Dionne Jr.'s column, 'Time to stand up to the gun lobby' [Opinion, April 21], is rife with misinformation. For one thing, there is no credible evidence that 'hundreds and thousands of assault weapons' used by Mexican drug gangs are traced back to gun shows in the U.S."
"Secondly, gun shows do a federal background check for each gun sold. Thirdly, guns were not the cause of the Columbine shootings -- a popular anti-gun example -- but were the result of the parents' absent awareness of their children's dark, anti-social appetites."
"It is the same old saw used by the anti-gun proponents that if you take away guns from law-abiding citizens, it will somehow make us safer. Balderdash! ..." ... |

"One of the neatest things about platforming as we do here is that one can have a build-up of hundreds of articles or podcasts or appearances which can be located on the www long after their initial publication date. Two of my most popular articles floating around are 1) There's no such thing as sensible gun laws, and 2) Sarah and James Brady: the anger from another time. ..."

"As I have mentioned before (as recently as last Tuesday), with political reality forcing the Obama administration and Democratic Party leadership to abandon (for now) aggressive pursuit of a renewed 'assault weapons' ban, the next target would be lower hanging fruit. I refer to efforts to close the mythical 'gun show loophole'."

"I have now gone through my threshold of pain and patience in allowing the gun lobby to continue to determine public policy on gun control. Citizens arise."
"As E.J. Dionne Jr. noted in his column, it is time we stood up to the gun lobby. We cannot blame Mexico solely for poor law enforcement over the drug cartel when we supply from our country the assault weapons ..."

A few days ago we told you about Obama's announcement that he will be pushing the U.S. Senate to ratify the inter-American arms trafficking treaty.
That treaty would ban reloading or handloading of ammunition, custom building of guns and quite possibly even upgrading existing firearms with new stocks, sights, triggers etc., without a gov't license here in the U.S..
Today ARCCA wrote a letter to our two Senators urging them to oppose any such treaty;
Dear Senator Lincoln & Pryor,
As the representative of over 65,000 Arkansas concealed handgun licensees, in solidarity with the Arkansas Rifle and Pistol Association, we are urging you, in the strongest of terms, |

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, the state's largest and oldest Second Amendment rights organization, announces the endorsement of Michael Schiff for Sullivan County Sheriff. Sheriff Schiff's belief in the individual civil rights of citizens to keep and bear arms, and the understanding that criminals - not ordinary citizens - are responsible for violent crime, are very much appreciated by gun owners and the Association. NYSRPA strongly encourages the firearm owning community in Sullivan County to support Michael Schiff in his bid for re-election as Sullivan County Sheriff. |

"Many local residents have yet another reason to be upset with state lawmakers -- and it has nothing to do with higher taxes or secret budget negotiations."
"Area gun owners are decrying a series of proposed laws and regulations that they say would ban or severely limit the purchase of firearms or ammunition within New York. The proposals, being pushed by downstate Democrats, would -- among other things -- establish new regulations for purchasing bullets, set up an ammunition coding system on all handgun and assault weapon ammunition, require the renewal of firearms licenses after five years, impose more stringent rules for weapon storage, and ban the sale, use or possession of 50 caliber or larger caliber weapons." ... |

"Marking the anniversaries of the Columbine and Virginia Tech shootings, gives a the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE) an opportunity to gather support for new gun laws in Wisconsin."
"The group was touring the state on Monday and Tuesday with a display of 450 shirts, signifying the 450 people killed in Wisconsin each year to gun violence. WAVE says that number would go down, if Wisconsin adopted tougher background check laws."
"Currently, only licensed gun dealers need to perform background checks when selling firearms. Unlicensed dealers and individuals selling guns do not. Law enforcement says criminals often take advantage of that loophole." ... -------
Submitter's Note: Then law enforcement lies. According to the DOJ, 1% - 2% of criminals obtained their guns from private sellers. As for those "450 gun deaths" about two-thirds (300) are suicides. Study after study has shown that stricter gun laws may reduce 'gun suicide', but do not change overall suicide rates. |

Fox News reporter Greta Van Susteren recently interviewed ATF agents about the surging violence in Mexico. The ATF is partially repsonsible for enforcing America's gun laws, and recently much of their work has been devoted to stopping the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico. According to the ATF spokesperson interviewed, while the military-grade machine guns used by Mexican drug cartels are being imported from Central America, "the predominate amount of weapons we see are being purchased here [the U.S.] and being traffic to Mexico."
Later, Greta visited the firing range to learn more about the weapons being smuggled into Mexico and even fire them herself. |

"During his visit to Mexico last week, President Obama suggested that Americans are partly to blame for the appalling violence associated with the illegal drug trade there. 'The demand for these drugs in the United States is what's helping keep these cartels in business,' he said. 'This war is being waged with guns purchased not here but in the United States.'"
"Obama is right that the U.S. is largely responsible for the carnage in Mexico ... But the problem is neither the drugs Americans buy nor the guns they sell; it's the war on drugs our government insists the rest of the world help it fight. Instead of acknowledging the failure of drug control, the Obama administration is using it as an excuse for an equally vain attempt at gun control." ... |
