In the words of one Berkshire County gun shop owner, "gun sales have been through the roof" in recent months.

Indeed, sales of firearms in the United States began to rise in the lead-up to the November 2008 presidential election, including here in Democratic Massachusetts long viewed as a bastion for liberal, anti-gun politics. And they continued to soar for the first three months of 2009, according to the FBI's National Criminal Investigative Service, which performs background checks on people seeking to carry firearms.

A presidential portrait adorns the corridor between the gun shop and firing range at the Bullet Hole, a Belleville landmark.

Out front, rifles line the wall, muzzles pointed skyward. Revolvers sit in locked glass cases, some basic black, others fashion pink. Old Glory is everywhere, along with military flags, eagle murals and other patriotic decor.

[HU President] Harvey repeatedly praised police and emergency responders for their professionalism and swift action, which he credited with avoiding more carnage and preventing deaths. He also touted the university's security, saying he believed it to be "one of the safest campuses anywhere."

"The fact that they responded so quickly, so effectively, so professionally may well have avoided further tragedy," he said. "This is a tragedy. We are fortunate that no students were involved. ... I continue to believe that Hampton University is one of the safest campuses anywhere."

Ed.: How exactly did campus cops prevent deaths by showing up after the killer had already attempted suicide?

The Washington State Legislature is getting kudos from the Seattle Times for passage of House Bill 1517, which restores voting rights to felons on the premise that it helps them rejoin society and resume full citizenship.

Heres a news flash for the editorial writer at the Seattle Times: Full Citizenship carries with it restoration of all civil rightsincluding the right to keep and bear arms. What the Times thinks is just peachy, along with the lawmakers who pushed this thing Democrats Jeanne Kohl-Welles of Seattle (why do people hyphenate their last names?) and Rep. Jeannie Darnielle of Tacoma is not full citizenship, but the creation of a voting bloc they believe will largely punch their hanging chads for Democrats.

That, unfortunately, probably is true and undoubtedly is contributing to the hysteria. Obama has tried mightily to fight the gun-snatcher charge with multiple, unambiguous, consistent comments supporting responsible gun ownership, but still, the gun-rights grapevine grows and grows.

Reports verified by FactCheck.org reflect that Obama "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms" and that he "will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns." He also has said, according to CBS News, that "we're not going to mess with (your guns)," and that even if he did want to snatch Americans' guns, "I couldn't get it done. I don't have the votes in Congress."

President Barack Obama says he is reluctant to take the lead in antagonizing gun owners through new infringements upon Second Amendment rights. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents a liberal district of California, has no such qualms.

During a recent appearance, Pelosi made it clear that a gun registration law is high on liberal lawmakers' agenda. "We want them registered," she said of Americans' firearms.

At the same time, Pelosi insisted that there is no conspiracy to confiscate guns from law-abiding owners. She claims that would not be possible even if liberals wanted to do it, because of a Supreme Court decision regarding a handgun ban in the District of Columbia.

Judging by the virulent nature of the responses to our editorial "Gun Violence; America Needs a Surge Like Iraq" there are clearly many violent people out there.

We wonder where they live. We have even been accused of being racist; sexists; and Nazis. Rather than engage in debate, we have been abused. Just consider the sampling, all barely submitted within 24 hours after we posted our editorial on Saturday.

...

Now we are convinced these postings are being coordinated.

So one thing is abundantly clear. Those who support the proliferation of guns are well organized and well coordinated.

Not a single posting came from people who support gun control. For a long time, the gun lobby will continue to carry the day in this country.

Contrary to the position expressed in an editorial of this very newspaper yesterday, I personally dont oppose the right to bear arms.

Many people believe the Second Amendment to the Constitution gives individuals the right to bear arms.

Many prominent Americans own guns.

Many editorials in The New York Times support the limiting of the sale of assault rifles and handguns. This is self-serving. Arthur Sulzberger Jr. has a pistol permit to carry a handgun. Yet, Sulzberger has not had someone attempt to put a murder contract out on him as far as I know.

Senator Charles Schumer has a pistol permit to carry a handgun. Yet no one has attempted to put a murder contract out on the senator as a far as I know.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters announced that 31,110 people died on the nation's roads from January through October, compared to 34,502 in 2007, In addition, the fatality rate per 100 million vehicles miles traveled for the first nine months of 2008 is 1.28, compared to 1.37 for 2007.

This was announced as, "historic lows in deaths on our nation's roads"

But you won't hear any gnashing of teeth over the "widespread availability" of vehicles. There are groups of course like M.A.D.D. but even these groups are aimed at curbing a type of behavior, not demonizing the instrument used to kill. And not every news story about a DUI ends with, "M.A.D.D. says............."

In it's latest attempt to derail the concealing of permit holder information, the AP has come up with the worst that it could find about the Tennessee Handgun Carry permits. So far (unlike here in Arkansas) nothing has worked.

The latest is this, KTHV is only too happy to comply, "Nearly 1,200 Tennesseans have had their state-issued handgun carry permits revoked or suspended for running afoul of the law over the last four years.

Under a bill advancing in the Legislature, the public would be barred from finding out their names or the circumstances that caused them to lose their rights to carry loaded weapons in public.

NEW YORK It was a gun buyback not a bomb buyback.

New York City police were holding a suspect Saturday who they say tried to turn in a live hand grenade to police at a gun-buyback program in the Bronx.

Authorities say the NYPD's bomb squad responded to a church where guns were being collected at around 4:30 p.m. and left 15 minutes later with the grenade, carrying it out in a special carrier. The program offers $200 for guns, no questions asked.

Police were questioning the man, who they didn't immediately identify. It's not clear if he will face any charges.

1. CIFTA Gun Treaty Removes Congressional Oversight
2. Amend Constitution by Statute, Using EPA Laws
3. National Ammo Shortage Is Suspicious

NONE of the proposed gun controls are likely to pass by themselves through Congress. If the treaty is enacted they don't have to they become law when the treaty is ratified.

Virtually NO PROTECTIONS FOR RKBA are to be found, and the wordings are loose enough to allow all sorts of attacks on gun rights American enjoy today.

Home reloading of ammunition would become illegal and subject to severe sanctions, without government licensing that is undefined and could include almost any conditions....................

Regarding an April 22, article, "Paulin sponsors bill requiring periodic renewal of handgun licenses:" Licenses don't need to be renewed if the system that is currently in place worked as it should. States have been given grants to improve the automation and transmittal of criminal history dispositions and records and mental health adjudications or commitments to federal and state record repositories. In New York, a felony conviction spells revocation of a license. Also, New York State Penal Law 400 allows any court to have someone's license revoked for cause.

The previous owners left a lot of trash in the yard, so Fath was cleaning up Thursday afternoon. That's when he found a 22 caliber bullet in the yard.

"My hammer was outside so I took the bullet and put it on a rock and smacked it with the hammer," Fath said.

Fath wasn't expecting the bullet to fire.

"It went off and went into my belly and knocked me on my butt," Fath said.

I smacked the bullet and fell down and blood came pouring out," Fath said. "I was hitting it to smash it. I didn't expect it to go bang."

Fath said he'll never hit a bullet with a hammer again.

Second letter-page down

Thanks to Publisher Robin Quillon for his column, Dont handcuff law-abiding gun owners (April 19).

I am tired of being demonized for owning and using guns responsibly. And I am incensed with the gun-control proposals coming out of Philadelphia.

The crime problem in Philadelphia is not because of guns, but because of a culture that has no respect for anything, including human life.

Apparently he was a member of the BATFE's task force.

This from KTHV, "An undercover Little Rock police officer was suspended for 30 days after being arrested for drunken driving and trying to get out of it by asking for "professional courtesy."
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, using records it obtained through a public disclosure request, says detective Russell C. Littleton completed his suspension in January. The newspaper says the 35-year-old also lost the privilege of taking an unmarked police truck home at night and had to have an interlock installed on the truck. Littleton is an 11 year department veteran assigned to a U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives task force.

The language for S. 843, Senator Frank Lautenbergs bill to close the mythical gun show loophole, is now available and is every bit as bad as expected. It would register private gun sales with the FBI and attorney general, potentially impacting not just gun shows but reaching into your home. It is almost certainly the first gun bill Democrats move...

Athens-Clarke County Police Capt. Clarence Holeman said the shooter was the ex-husband of one of the people killed, Marie Bruce, who was in her 40s. Police were looking for George Zinkhan, 57, who has been a professor at the university in Athens since the 1990s.

The other victims were a male in his 40s and another male in his 60s. The three were shot multiple times, Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said.
