Illinois' ability to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally ill or pose a danger would be strengthened under several proposals in the General Assembly, but the ideas have raised concerns among gun rights advocates. Some of the Democrat-sponsored plans would remove a person's right to hold a Firearm Owners Identification card, which is necessary to purchase a gun in Illinois, if the individual has an order of protection against him or her or if a family member successfully petitions a court. Another plan would require better reporting of cases in which a judge has deemed someone mentally disabled. |

Local marksmen are invited to Michigan State University's Demmer Center to show off their skills for a shot at appearing on a new reality television show. The center is a qualifying range for American Marksman, a forthcoming competitive shooting show produced by the Outdoor Channel. Top amateurs will be pitted against one another for a $50,000 grand prize later this year.
Registration for the amateur shooting competition costs $20 for either pistol or rifle or $35 for both and can be done on the American Marksman website. Shooters can visit 4830 E. Jolly Road until May 31 for a chance to qualify for the show.
It took about a year to get the Demmer Center accepted as a qualifying site, said Michael Galella, the center's director. |

Campaigning for her mother in Maryland last week, Chelsea Clinton said the Supreme Court could issue a "definitive" ruling on gun control in the near future. Clinton didn't define "definitive," let alone "gun control." But with a vacancy on the court following the death of Antonin Scalia, it seems more than plausible that Clinton the Younger was referring to overturning the landmark decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.

While I think Obamas most recent move on the gun control front is justified, stricter registration requirements will do little, Im afraid, to significantly reduce gun-related mayhem. The misfit who gunned down the kids at Sandy Hook was provided his weaponry by a misguided mother. The two radicals who mowed down the Christmas party crowd in California were provided guns by a misguided neighbor who had no record that would have kept him from buying weapons.

A Niagara County grand jury decided not to indict a Falls man who shot and killed another man outside of his Packard Court apartment on March 11. Niagara Falls police had suggested that the shooting may have been a case of self-defense. Police said they responded to a call of "shots fired" in Packard Court at 9:30 p.m. March 11. The first patrol officers on the scene said they found the body of Elijah Little, 28, lying in a grass courtyard outside a Packard Court apartment. |

The local anesthesiologist at the center of a raid last month wants his firearms back. No criminal charges have yet been filed against Dr. Michael Cozzi after state and federal officials raided his home in an investigation into his prescribing practices. Calling him a clear and immediate danger to the public health and safety, the Indiana attorney general successfully argued for the suspension of Cozzis medical license. While he was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of cocaine or a narcotic drug, that charge was allowed to expire, and no criminal charges are pending against the physician. |

As of Jan. 1, 2016, Seattle has imposed a $25 per firearm tax and a $0.01 to $0.05 cent per round tax on all ammo. Just recently the governor of the U.S. Territory of the Northern Mariana Islands imposed a $1,000 dollar gun tax against the citizens of that territory. Back in 1993 Hillary Clinton fostered this roll model of a gun tax that would make buying a gun so expensive that no one could legally afford to buy one. |

A bill that would prevent the roughly 3,600 individuals who hold concealed carry gun permits in Rhode Island from bringing a firearm on school grounds drew the ire of gun-rights advocates Tuesday. During a packed Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on more than a dozen gun-related bills, gun proponents argued that if someone entered school grounds with intent to harm, children will have the best chance for safety if someone who lawfully carries a gun happens to also be there and can take on the shooter. |

The state House has proposed letting Missourians who can legally own guns carry them concealed anywhere they can now openly carry, and do so without a permit. The bill is sponsored by Representative Eric Burlison (R-Springfield). If you, as a law-abiding citizen, are legally allowed to own and carry a firearm for self-defense, then youre legally allowed to carry that firearm for self-defense with no additional paperwork, said Burlison. We will get out of the business of trying to tell people how they are going to choose to carry the firearm that they legally have the right to already carry.

Pershing Dr. to Nova Armory. A comment frequently offered by multiple trainers at various training institutions is that in a gunfight, you will not rise to new levels of performance, but rather revert to your level of training. Sometimes, we have a tendency to doubt the wisdom of these words, like when we see an Olympic athlete set a new world record or be awarded a perfect score for a championship performance. While its true that he or she did achieve a new, elevated level of performance on this particular day, keep in mind it was by doing all the things learned and practiced in years of training. The gold medal wasnt won by trying something never before attempted.
