"For the fourth time, New York City's lawsuit against several gun manufacturers has survived an attempt by Congress to kill it off."
"A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled Thursday that the city may have access to gun tracing information gathered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, even though a recently passed measure expressly forbids such data from being used in civil suits."
"U.S. Judge Jack B. Weinstein said the new rule doesn't apply to information already in the city's possession." |

"I think when you look at the numbers, when you do surveys, it's a very small number of people who actually believe that people should be carrying concealed weapons in the workplace, on the streets of our cities, in schools," Bloomberg said yesterday."
------- The federal government estimates there are over 65 million gun owners in this country. At least four million are members of the NRA, and millions of others belong to other gun rights groups such as Gun Owners of America and the Second Amendment Foundation.
A recent National Association of Police Chiefs Survey also contradicted Bloomberg's claims and concluded that most police also believe that carrying concealed weapons reduces crime. |

"The 19-10 vote one vote short of the necessary two-thirds margin came even after Sen. Dean Martin, R-Phoenix, speculated that Napolitano vetoed the measure so she could use her emergency powers to take weapons away from members of the Minuteman Project patrolling the Mexican border."

"Last December, Morio Billings, a 31-year-old career criminal from Chicago, broke into Wilmette resident's Hale DeMar's home and stole some house keys and a car. Less than 24 hours later, Billings was inside DeMar's house again, trying to see what else he could find."
"What he found was DeMar holding a handgun."
"DeMar, who shot Billings in the shoulder and calf, has not been charged for the shooting (Cook County prosecutors have determined it was justified), but he has been charged with violating the village of Wilmette's ban on handguns, as well as for failing to renew his Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card. He could serve up to a year in jail."
"Now, a Downstate Democrat, 117th District State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion), who called DeMar a 'law-abiding citizen,' has introduced HB 4075, which would override local handgun bans when the handguns are used in self-defense." |

"The Second Amendment to the Constitution states that the people have the right to keep and bear arms and that this right is not to be infringed upon by the state. The Tenth Amendment states that powers not delegated to the federal government belong to the States and the people."
"The Constitution places priority on personal responsibility over federal bureaucracy. Citizens are given the right to defend themselves. When there is a question of interpretation, we should err on the side of more liberty, not more legislation."
"...So the debate over concealed carry is really a debate over liberty. Will the state become more powerful, or will the people become more responsible?" |

Shootings in Minneapolis also have been surprisingly common lately. The occurrence of these violent acts can be lessened by one thing for sure: gun control."
"Shooting after shooting, it becomes clear the problem is that too many people are able to legally acquire handguns in America. Too many people who do legally own handguns arent keeping them safe from their children."

"Growing up in New England in the fifties, there seemed to be no great public concern about guns. At a fairly tender age, I was responsible enough to be entrusted with a BB gun, which I used to protect the household from marauding tin cans, birds in the cornfield, and squirrels robbing the bird feeders. A few years later, I enrolled in a neighboring towns NRA Youth program, shooting .22 rifles in the basement of the armory. A young boy with an air rifle or .22 drew little interest from passersby on the country roads along which Id walk on the way to the range, or to an abandoned quarry where I often practiced. THE Bracks Government has ruled out calls from the Prime Minister to further restrict gun ownership, saying Victoria led the way after a shooting at Monash University.
Yesterday, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre, John Howard called on the states to take a tougher stance against handguns. "I think there's always more that can be done at a state level," Mr Howard told the ABC.
But a spokeswoman for Premier Steve Bracks said Victoria had led the way on gun reform in 2002 after commerce student Huan Yun Xiang killed two people during a bloody rampage at Monash University. Victoria was the first state to move on a Commonwealth agreement to ban many handguns. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm . . . is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege.
