Congress eyes citizenship oath

"Lawmakers on Capitol Hill heard testimony yesterday about a bill that would codify into law the Oath of Allegiance taken by new citizens and prevent changes to its wording unless made by Congress."

The current oath has five elements:

1 - support for the Constitution
2 - renunciation of prior allegiance
3 - defense of the Constitution against foreign and domestic enemies
4 - true faith and allegiance
5 - bearing arms or noncombatant service as required

"...[the new version] would drop the part about bearing arms and replace it with "I further commit myself to defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, either by military, noncombatant or civilian service."

"A day after taking a beating on Capitol Hill from members of Congress, the Transportation Security Administration struck back at critics who accused the agency of dragging its feet on its armed pilots program."

" 'We are very passionate about this excellent program,' said Amy von Walter, a TSA spokeswoman. She defended the agency's record and pointed to recent steps taken to improve the training of applicants."

"Four members of Congress gathered Thursday to introduce legislation they said would speed up the process of arming pilots and tear down the barriers that turn off pilots from ever applying."

"At this writing, it looks like John Kerry is well on his way to earning the Democratic nod to run against President Bush. But if Kerry wins, gun owners lose. A review of the votes he has cast since becoming a Senator in 1984 should make all law-abiding gun owners want to scream." ...

Federal Cartridge Company also offers several options in this caliber."

"But I haven't heard of many shooters throwing away their .300 Winchester Mags or, for that matter, their .30-06s to go out and buy a .300 WSM, though that doesn't mean a few haven't made the switch. Still, it's early, and I think the jury has yet to return a verdict on the ultimate popularity of this cartridge. ..."

"With wild turkey populations at their zenith and liberal seasons and bag limits now available in nearly every state of the Union, turkeys no longer take a back seat to wide-racked whitetails when it comes to the dedication of the American hunter/conservationists. And while turkey hunting has become special, turkey-hunting gear has become "specialized." This is evident in everything from camouflage boot soles to high-frequency slate calls and magnum shot charges never before dreamed of. Along the way, turkey guns, too, have evolved. ..."

Private Guns, Public Health by David Hemenway - Another "Study" Which Looks Only At Costs And Not Benefits

"On an average day in the U.S., guns are used to kill almost eighty people, and to wound nearly three hundred more. If any other consumer product had this sort of disastrous effect, the public outcry would be deafening; yet when it comes to guns such facts are accepted as a natural consequence of supposedly high American rates of violence."

"Private Guns, Public Health explodes that myth and many more, revealing the advantages of treating gun violence as a consumer safety and public health problem."

-------
Note: Motor vehicle accidents kill over 120 people per day and wound 8,363 people per day. Where's the "deafening outcry"?

Note also that guns are used defensively about 2.5 million times each year. Assuming that only one life is at stake in each of those incidents (many times it's more than one), that would make 6,849 lives saved per day.

"Putting the best spin on its humiliating loss in the U.S. Senate last month, the NRA is trumpeting a letter faxed to Senators moments before a final vote on legislation that would have granted the gun industry unprecedented legal immunity. The letter ...urged members to vote against the NRA's top legislative priority..."

"The NRA argues that its issuance of the letter, and the bill's subsequent defeat, proves its political might. In reality, the letter was a desperate attempt to kill legislation over which the gun lobby had lost control. ..."

The AW ban died along with S1805, as did the gun show destruction bill and the gun lock mandate. Gun owners ultimately came out as winners in this. But Horwitz and his cohorts are masters of spin.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A bill that would have banned the sale of 19 semiautomatic guns in Maryland was killed by a single vote Friday in a Senate committee.

The Maryland Assault Weapons Ban of 2004 (Senate Bill 288) was intended to replace a federal ban on military-style guns that is set to expire in September and is not expected to be renewed by Congress.

Gun control advocates saw the bill as their last opportunity this year to strengthen Maryland's gun laws.

The measure was defeated 6-5. Three Democrats joined the three Republican members of the committee in voting against the ban.
