The decade of the 1980s was a time of great change in my personal circumstances. For the first five years, I was a working cop who spent almost all of his off-duty time fooling around with one kind of handgun or another. At the halfway point in the decade, I retired from law enforcement and went to work full-time for one of the several gun magazines headquartered in southern California. Throughout those 10 years, I also fueled my growing collection of pistols and revolvers by handloading for them.

There are some questions you can easily answer. One of them is Joe Bidens stance on the Second Amendment. Heres the quick scoop: Hes been hostile to our rights for over four decades. Biden, though, stands out for his unwavering opposition to modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms. In November, 2017, he expressly stated that Stephen Willeford, the heroic armed citizen who stopped the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, should not have been able to buy the AR-15 he used to stop the attack.

As predicted here yesterday, the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce express train to deter populist petition campaigns left the station in the Senate this afternoon. Such an amendment couldn't be considered until two had been approved.

In the aftermath of the February 2018 mass murder at a Parkland, Florida high school, it became readily apparent that danger signs and evidence abounded that a disturbed former student at the school was likely going to commit such a heinous crime. Despite local, state and federal law enforcement officials having possession of such knowledge, they failed to act on that information even though they had lawful and ready means to do so. |

Switzerland, where gun culture has deep roots, has managed to avoid the charged national debates over firearm ownership that have consumed other countries. But in a state where compulsory military service means many are comfortable around weapons, voters might, in a May referendum, push back against gun reforms demanded by the European Union.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
