The Justice Department proposed legislation on Thursday that would give the attorney general discretion to bar terrorism suspects from buying firearms, seeking to close a gap in federal gun laws.
...would give the attorney general authority to deny a firearm purchase if the buyer was found "to be or have been engaged in conduct constituting, in preparation for, in aid of, or related to terrorism." |

In the first week after the tragedy, Midland gun dealer Tommy "Hoss Fly" Atchison saw his gun sales increase by a significant percentage. He said he usually sells about three guns per week and as of Friday afternoon he had sold five. People buying and considering buying had two basic reasons, according to Atchison.
"Some were looking for assault type weapons like SKs, AKs. They feel like the Democrats in Congress are going to go back on gun control," so those people want to purchase a gun before it becomes harder or illegal altogether. |

A young man walks into a Huntsville gun store with a handgun on his mind.
There's no shortage. Glass cases are full of new and used revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Men wait to show any gun he fancies.
He knows women carry pistols now for self-defense. There's an industry in smaller "ladies guns." But there are no women here today. Young men in sagging jeans, yes, older men in ball caps, men in ties and employee badges. |

"Crazy Like a Fox."
That's an old idiom, but it became popular after Academy Award-winning humorist S.J. Perelman, who once lived in upper Bucks County, used it as the title of a 1944 book.
There was nothing funny in the events that made me think of that phrase, however. Seung-Hui Cho is only the latest in a series of gunmen whose murderous rampages have been attributed to craziness. |

The video appears to involve an incident on the California border where a Border Patrol agent shoots in the chest an illegal alien who appears ready to hit him with a rock. Interestingly, there are actually two border patrol cases that fit this scenario.
A date stamp on the video identifies the incident occurring on March 26, 2007, at the border near Calexico, Mexico.
The video is being widely identified on the Internet with the Corbett incident, But the Corbett incident occurred Jan. 12, 2007.
Both incidents involve remarkably similar circumstances – a Border Patrol Agent who shoots an illegal immigrant in the chest at close range to prevent the illegal immigrant from hitting him with a rock. |

This past Tuesday the governor of Virginia announced he would close the loophole that allowed Seung-Hui Cho to buy the guns he used to kill 32 people and himself on the Virginia Tech campus. OK, it's a good idea to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally unstable. But be careful about how far the calls for gun control go, because the idea that gun control laws lower gun crime is a myth.
...strict gun control laws do not always have the effect that legislators intend. More guns (in the right hands) can stop crime, and fewer guns (in the wrong hands) can make for more crime. Gun control isn't crime control. |

The bullet that killed a New York state trooper during a shootout Wednesday morning in a farmhouse in the Catskill Mountains came from the gun of a fellow officer, not the suspect they had cornered, the state police said yesterday. The police said that the suspect, who was hiding in the house after shooting another trooper the day before, fired one bullet at the slain trooper, David C. Brinkerhoff, but that it hit his body armor. That bullet knocked Trooper Brinkerhoff onto one knee. He was then struck once in the back of the head, fatally, during the fusillade of bullets that followed from three other troopers.

When I read the "Derby" from our President of the Union, I was expecting a tirade against the evils of guns and a call for tighter regulation or an outright ban. I was relieved and impressed when I saw that his position took the correct view in attacking not the guns, but the motives of the people that use them for crime or, as was the case recently, a destructive rampage. |

By Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore;
"...Alabama legislators who introduced House Bill 600 in early April are probably hoping to use the tragic murder of 32 students and faculty at Virginia Tech for their own anti-gun political agenda..."
"...In other words, this bill would affect, in addition to automatic weapons, practically all pistols, revolvers and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that Alabamians already lawfully own."
"Giving the government more information about our lives and the guns we own does nothing to stop criminals with guns..."
"...The right to keep and bear arms is not just a means of protecting life, but also an indispensable safeguard of our liberties against oppressive government..." |

Selling firearms at gun shows can be lucrative, but authorities have a warning for dealers going to this weekend's event in Sandy: Make sure you have a license. U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman and officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) said at a Friday news conference they are continuing to crack down on illegal gun sales and will have undercover agents at the Crossroads Gun Show at the South Towne Exposition Center.
An 18-month undercover investigation from 2003 to 2005 at gun shows along the Wasatch Front identified a number of people selling firearms without licenses, he said.
Three of those charged with federal gun law violations spoke repentantly about their actions on Friday as part of a deal. |

What can "Brown" do for you? How about steal your guns and sell them on the street? That's what the feds allege after arresting UPS driver Craig Francis on Thursday and charging him with swiping weapons he was supposed to deliver to a popular Chelsea gun range. Francis snatched the packages instead of dropping them at the Westside Rifle and Pistol Range at 20 W. 20th St., said prosecutors for the Manhattan U.S. attorney. The delivery man then resold them to street buyers, said sources close to the probe. |

Adam Zyglis graduated from bush league to outright unprofessional with his April 20 editorial cartoon comparing the National Rifle Association to a sick mass murderer. I joined the NRA long after deciding it was right in its advocacy. After realizing that such things as handgun bans proposed in the early 80s were wrong, I began noticing that gun control proponents made new demands with each victory. Of course, new demands were always urgently needed or reasonable. Miserable tactics included scare stories, technical misinformation and the sowing of fear among urban populations about their gun-owning neighbors. |

For as long as there have been guns in America, there have been gun regulations. Indeed, in the decades after the adoption of the Second Amendment, gun regulations became more restrictive, not less. The Second Amendment links the right to keep and bear arms with the civic obligation to participate in a well-regulated militia. It has nothing to do with the use of firearms for self-defense, hunting or target shooting.
The Founding Fathers were not anti-gun, nor opposed to self-defense. But they recognized that these activities had to be balanced against the needs of public safety.
...the Second Amendment does not pose a barrier to gun regulation; it compels it. |

The accidental shooting of David C. Brinkerhoff, the New York state trooper who was killed by a bullet from a fellow trooper confronting a suspect inside a Catskill farmhouse on Wednesday, puts Trooper Brinkerhoff in a small minority of police officers killed in the line of duty. In the annals of law enforcement history, cases of officers dying at the hands of their own colleagues have been exceedingly rare. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, from 1893 through 2006, about 18,000 officers were killed on the job but only 198 of them at the hand of a fellow officer. Put another way, slightly more than 1 percent of all officers killed in the line of duty were killed by bullets fired by their colleagues.
