But does this incident, as horrible as it is, prove that Americas gun owners are unsafe or that accidental shootings are commonplace? In an April 11 editorial, Get tough on gun safety, The Star-Ledger wrote: So to say that the vast majority of gun owners are responsible, and these cases are aberrations, is a stretch. What stretches credulity, however, is that The Star-Ledger ignored available evidence and cherry-picked outdated surveys to back up a pre-determined conclusion. In fact, the opposite is true: The overwhelming majority of gun owners are incredibly safe and responsible with their firearms. |

The Government Accountability Office tells Whispers it is now investigating large ammunition purchases made by the Department of Homeland Security. Chuck Young, a spokesman for GAO, says the investigation of the purchases is "just getting underway." The congressional investigative agency is jumping into the fray just as legislation was introduced in both the Senate and the House to restrict the purchase of ammo by some government agencies (except the Department of Defense). The AMMO Act, introduced Friday, would prevent agencies from buying more ammunition if "stockpiles" are greater than what they were in previous administrations. |

We now have three proposals on fixing New Jerseys gun laws, courtesy of the Senate, Assembly and governor. So its easy to get confused. Before weighing them against each other, lets remember why we need gun reform in the first place. New Jersey already has stricter gun laws than most states, sure. But [... blah, blah, blah.]
Submitter's comment: As usual with this rag, the comments are more intelligent and fact-based than the editorial itself. And the editors wonder why they're so close to bankruptcy. As Abe Lincoln said: You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time. |

NJ Governor Christie continues to disappoint conservatives who believed in him prior to last years presidential election. Beyond budgeting, there isnt anything resembling a Republican platform about his policies. The sweeping gun control measures unveiled by Christie are the last blow to his reputation as conservative by any stretch of the imagination. A local radio station 101.5 put it plainly: New Jersey has the second toughest gun laws in the country. The first facet of Christies plan seeks to make them even stricter.
Submitter's comment: I hope all the dupes who rejoiced when Krispy Kreme was elected will think long and hard before the next election. |

A clique of "Three Percenters" in the Jersey City Police Department's Emergency Services Unit sprouted about two years ago and department brass put a stop to it, officials have told The Jersey Journal. "They were separating themselves from the others in the unit and we put a stop to it immediately," Jersey City Police Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach said. The deputy chief said there were officers who were disciplined over the matter.
Submitter's comment: This is the most meaningless "poll" I've ever seen. |

No fewer than eight motions and demands are slated to be heard by Judge Debra Nelson Tuesday, as George Zimmerman returns to the courtroom where his murder trial is set to begin in six weeks.
But its the one item not yet officially on the docket that could prove most interesting.
Prosecutors want Judge Nelson to conduct a full inquiry of Zimmerman to make sure he understands he is waiving his right to a pretrial immunity hearing.
At least, it appears he is waiving that right. |

It is illegal to carry a gun on board an airline flight, but if you forget your Glock is in your carry-on bag and are inevitably stopped at the security checkpoint, you're also in big trouble, according to a Wilmington International Airport official.
In the first four months of 2013, five handguns were confiscated from ILM passengers, said Gary Taylor, airport operations manager.
"We hear this more often than anything else, Oh, I forgot,' they forgot the weapon was in the bag, or The bag belongs to my wife or husband.' I believe them for the most part," said Taylor, "but we still have a job to do as far as the criminal offense of carrying concealed and trying to get it into a secured area of an airport." |

Hoplophobia, the morbid fear of guns, is a real, extremely dangerous, widespread and clinically recognizable complex specific phobia with a number of unique characteristics, described. It has caused and continues to cause grievous harm in America. Dr. Sarah Thompson, M.D., author of two seminal papers on gun phobia, claims hoplophobia is little more than name calling and rare, points we dispute. Because one of the avoidance mechanisms of this phobia uniquely involves politics, its effects and importance are greater than for other phobias. Co-morbidities include suppressed rage, post-traumatic stress disorder, delusional disorder and panic disorder, with implications for society at large. |

Government-funded gun research was openly biased in the 1990s. CDC officials unabashedly supported gun bans, used CDC funds to advocate strict gun control, and poured millions of taxpayer dollars into funding research that was in fact advocacy thinly disguised medical-journal hit pieces against gun ownership. Congress investigated and in 1997 forbade the use of CDC funds to advocate or promote gun control. |

But the federal government long ago abandoned any pretext of constitutional restraint and that elevates what happened in Kansas this week to the highest level of importance.
This month, Governor Sam Brownback signed the Second Amendment Protection Act, nullifying a wide range of federal attacks on the right to keep and bear arms in Kansas.
Any act, law, treaty, order, rule or regulation of the government of the United States which violates the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is null, void and unenforceable in the state of Kansas. |

Kudos to our neighbors in East Coventry for recently joining the likes of the borough of Gilberton, the borough of Frackville, the borough of New Britain, and even Susquehanna County in passing Second Amendment Preservation Resolutions in Pennsylvania. These Resolutions are important measures because they 1) recognize the individual right to keep and bear arms as fundamental and natural; 2) assert the sovereignty of the people; and, 3) rightfully condemn federal overreaches into areas they are explicitly unauthorized to act within. |

Thanks to modern technology, in this column I have been able to talk about several weapon lights (such as the Crimson Trace Lightguard) that are small enough that they can fit on concealed-carry handguns. The same thing can be said about red dot sights.
Mini red dot sights have been around for well over a decade, and there are now so many of them out there its hard to keep track. Just off the top of my head I can think of the Burris FastFire, the Docter, Bushnell First Strike, JP Rifles JPoint, Insight Technologies MRDS, Leupold DeltaPoint and the Trijicon RMR. |

The incident happened after an altercation that ended with a man stabbing a woman in the hand and man in the stomach, according Huntington Junior College student Gregory Baker, a witness at the scene.
Baker said the altercation began after a group people who were talking loudly and drinking alcohol from open containers came by and stopped on the sidewalk in front of the building. A resident or manager from the apartment building asked the group to move along. He said when one woman in the group started hitting him, a man joined her and then others knocked him to the ground, pinned his legs down and began hitting him. |

State lawmakers are now set to vote whether to lift the ban on concealed weapons on college campuses.
The House bill would allow concealed handgun permit holders to carry their guns into campus buildings where they are currently banned.
Supporters say it's all about gun rights and self-defense and preventing more mass shootings.
But opponents -- including many college administrators -- worry it would lead to more violence on campus. |

Gunmaker Sturm, Ruger & Co.'s net income jumped 53 percent as gun sales surged. Its stock rose in late trading after it announced a quarterly dividend that was almost twice as big as it paid a year ago.
Demand for guns and ammunition has been strong as gun enthusiasts rushed to buy ahead of proposed laws that would limit sales on some kinds of firearms. Although federal gun-control legislation stalled, some states, including Connecticut, have passed tougher rules.
In one sign of tight supplies, the Southport, Conn.-based company said that distributers who sell its guns to retailers had just 59,200 units in inventory as of Dec. 31, down from 135,600 a year earlier. |
