"Its one of those bizarre stories that drops the jaws of those of us jaded by years of observing the hypocrisy, the double standards, and the in-your-face breaking of rules that seemingly defines the elites of the gun-ban crowd. California State Senator Leland Yee, a leading proponent in Golden State citizen disarmament, has been arrested in a conspiracy sting involving, among other things, Islamic militants and proposed illegal arms trafficking deals." |

Scary stuff, and not just for us. Since similarities are being discussed, one of the lessons of Waco I remember is the Davidians begging the media to cover things in real time, something that went largely unanswered as the cameras and crews were kept at bay "for their safety." That let a lot of bad things happen without scrutiny, didn't it? The thought strikes that the entire information distribution paradigm has changed since then. If you had to let the world know you needed them as real time witnesses, what would/could you do? |

The way Dave Salkin tells it, he warned the tenants in his warehouse in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood several times that they were exceeding their monthly $800 utility allotment. When their electric bill swelled to $1,400, Salkin couldn't pay it. The power was cut off. Salkin didn't know at the time in 2012 his tenants were ATF agents running an undercover storefront aimed at getting illegal guns and drugs off the streets. And Salkin, who was not under investigation as part of the sting, didn't know until Wednesday that the federal agents later went behind his back, got his account information off his electric bill and then called We Energies pretending to be him.

The fatal shooting Wednesday at Fort Hood, the second in less than five years, has renewed calls for Congress and the Defense Department to end restrictions on servicemembers carrying weapons on post. According to the Army, the gunman in Wednesday's shooting was carrying a handgun that was not registered at Fort Hood. He was able to kill three before killing himself, and wound 16. Lawmakers, as well as survivors of the 2009 shooting, claim he could have been stopped sooner if others on base had their weapons by their side. |

In late February, four federal agents carrying side arms with a drug-sniffing dog descended on the Taos Ski Valley in what was called a saturation patrol. Authorities were working on tips of possible drug selling and impaired driving in the ski resorts parking lot and surrounding area. But the agents werent from the FBI, ATF or even the Drug Enforcement Administration. Rather, the agents represented the U.S. Forest Service.

The Florida Senate on Thursday approved the so-called warning shot bill, moving to significantly revise the state's self-defense laws for the first time since the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
The bill, which was partly inspired by the case of a Jasonville woman sentenced to 20 years in prison after firing a shot near her estranged husband during an altercation, passed the chamber 32-7. The woman, Marissa Alexander, is out on bail awaiting a new trial.
The bill, which earlier received backing from the Republican-controlled House, now goes to the desk of Republican Gov. Rick Scott. |

The state house steps once again Thursday were filled by a group who wants the stand your ground law to go away in our state.
"The stand your ground law protected the guy who killed my nephew," said Thomas Niles.
Niles' nephew, Darrell Niles, was killed by a gun shot in 2010.
The man who fired the gun said he was standing his ground.
"We have a lot of young innocent men who are dying because of this law," Niles said. |

Guy Beveridge thinks of gun ownership the way Batman would think of his utility belt. Theres the grappling hook, the shark repellent and the concussion mines, but theres a sequence of steps that have to be checked off before the most powerful tool can be used.
(Responsible gun ownership) is about having an awareness, looking around to see if there is a better-lit street to go down, having that sort of preparedness so you do not put yourself in a situation where you have to use your weapon, said Beveridge, director of operations for National Personal Defense Academy in Copperas Cove. |

After military and pro-gun witnesses testified Thursday, a retired police chief provided both sides of the argument on whether gun control hinders civilians' civil rights, in day four of a constitutional test of Colorado's gun control laws.
Gun shop owners and hunters testified Thursday, as well as law enforcement officers. Some of the witnesses were among the 31 plaintiffs who accuse Gov. John Hickenlooper and state agencies of infringing on their civil rights, in Federal Court.
Hickenlooper in March 2013 signed three bills into law, introducing universal background checks for gun-buyers, and limiting the size magazines civilians can use. |

It takes almost no time at all to put 20 rounds through a semi-automatic pistol. Even someone who is not all that competent with a gun can put 20 rounds through a semiauto firearm in around 15 seconds or less.
Supposing that the killer drew and fired on his victims rapidly and without warning, and that he was in close proximity to them, he could have shot them all before any of them had any time to react. Even if they had been carrying a concealed weapon, they would have had very little time to react. Probably, they would have had no time to react. |

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy took time out Thursday to defend strengthened state firearms laws a year after their passage, while advocates on both sides of the legislation declared guns a central issue in this year's elections.
The Malloy administration said that to date 210 people had been denied when they tried to buy shotguns or rifles and failed background checks established under the new laws. Such checks weren't previously required for shotgun or rifle purchases made from nonlicensed or private sellers. |

It may seem easy for some people to buy a gun, especially if you have a clean record. But one man said it's not. His transaction has been delayed because his name is so common that it has been flagged in a background check.
According to the FBI, Texas led the nation last year for the most firearm background checks, with more than 1.6 million recorded, followed by Kentucky, California and Illinois.
After filling out a six-page application to buy a gun, Roy Mendoza walked into a gun store thinking he would get one soon with no problem. That was in February. To this day, his gun is still "on hold." |

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today fell back on the gun control lobbys current Holy Grail solution to mass shootings in reaction to yesterdays Fort Hood attack, telling the Washington Post that Congress should once again discuss expanding the federal background check.
What Reid failed to point out is that the gunman in yesterdays attack had passed a background check because, as this column reported earlier, he bought the pistol from a federally-licensed retailer. Various news agencies are reporting that Ivan Lopez bought his Smith & Wesson M&P .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol from the same Killeen, Tex., gun shop that sold Major Nidal Hasan his guns prior to the 2009 Fort Hood attack. |

Radical leftist Mike Malloy is no stranger to creating controversy on his radio show. Last year, he engaged in an on-air fantasy about fatally stabbing U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.
His murderous tendencies have apparently yet to subside, though his most recent targets are members of the National Rifle Association. Late last month, he detailed his plans to shoot an NRA member because he disapproves of the organizations support of self-defense. |

Attempts to roll back any of the Florida Stand Your Ground laws most incendiary elements have foundered more than two years after the death of Trayvon Martin. But a bill to expand the law passed Thursday, mere months after it was introduced.
The National Rifle Association-backed bill would expand Stand Your Ground-like protections to those who point a gun at an attacker or fire a gun as a self-defense threat or warning, expanding the scope of the discretion judges and juries retain to exempt shooters from criminal charges for gun violence. The final bill also includes a provision to keep Stand Your Ground records secret. |

Gun violence impacts health in all kinds of ways. There are the more obvious ones, like death and injury. As Olga Khazan pointed out at The Atlantic, suicide rates are higher in states where gun ownership is more common. In 2010, 19,392 people took their own lives with guns, while justifiable homicidesself-defense shootings that may have saved a lifenumbered only 230. Over two-thirds of homicides and over half of successful suicides involve the use of a gun, and accidental gun deaths average about two a day. The U.S. spends $2 billion a year on medical care for victims of gun injuries; one out of three people hospitalized after shootings is uninsured, according to The Huffington Post. |

A total of 60,757 firearms were registered in 2013, marking a nearly 21 percent increase from the 2012 record of 50,394, the report states.
In addition, 21,544 permits were issued to acquire those firearms. |

Residents and public safety officials yesterday expressed their support of a bill that would make it easier to get concealed firearm permits -- so long as they meet certain requirements.
Current law allows the chief of police to approve concealed firearm applications at his discretion. While the chief would retain his authority under the provisions of Bill 296, applicants would no longer need to show they have a good reason for applying for the permit. |

No doubt, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg passionately believes in gun control. To his credit, he puts his own money tens of millions of dollars, and possibly much more into pushing the issue politically.
But Bloomberg's push hasn't been just political advertising, lobbying and media appearances. He also funds studies that have gone overboard in backing up his anti-gun beliefs.
To put it plainly, they have not only exaggerated their conclusions but have fabricated numbers. And these incorrect numbers have then been used to push for more regulations. |

Meanwhile, Carlson, whose late father was a police officer, picked up right away on another important point. When the gunman was confronted by an armed military police officer who challenged him with her own sidearm, he stopped, raised his arms, then put the pistol to his own head and pressed the trigger.
The question was raised during last nights press briefing about soldiers not having firearms on post. Gen. Milley confirmed that soldiers are not allowed to carry firearms on post, and that security is provided by military police. Essentially, military bases are gun-free zones. |

State lawmakers should be looking for ways to eliminate the ambiguities surrounding the stand your ground law, not adding to the ways the law might be used by those undeserving of its protections.
Yet a measure that passed the House and the Senate would expand the law in ways that will add to the confusion law enforcement officers face when confronted with these cases, and possibly put the lives of innocent bystanders at risk. The law also contains a provision that would allow some stand your ground court records to be sealed from public view, a bad idea. |

In efforts to rally responsibly armed Americans across the nation, the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) is giving away a gun every day throughout the entire month of April. Its no joke: The USCCA kicked off its Gun-A-Day Giveaway April 1st.
Last years promotion was a HUGE success, USCCA President and Founder Tim Schmidt said. Since we launched the giveaway on April 1st, some people thought it was a joke. How can you give away a gun every day? But I promise you, this is the real deal. |
