"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court embraced the practice of consulting foreign legal decisions on Friday, rejecting the argument from conservatives that United States law should not take international thinking into account."

"After a strongly worded dissent in a juvenile death penalty case from Justice Scalia last month that accused the court of putting too much faith in international opinion, Ginsberg said the U.S. should, if anything, consider international law more often."

"Have you ever considered what you would do if you were traveling in a remote, unpopulated area and your vehicle broke down or your tire went flat? And for some reason that expensive cellular phone plan has a dead zone exactly where you are now stranded? What if the wrong person stopped to help you? ...The tide has turned, and common everyday citizens in 38 States now have 'Right to Carry' laws on their side. That 61 year old grandmother no longer seems like an easy target, because she might have a Concealed Firearm in her purse. ...type of legislation makes criminals think before they commit violent criminal acts."

... "The data released by the Justice Department late Monday centered on its use of Section 213 of the law, which allows federal agents, with a court order, to enter a suspect's home or residence secretly and search for evidence without immediately telling the person they have been there. The provision is among those set to expire at the end of 2005."

"The new data showed that the Justice Department used the secret warrants 108 times from April 2003 to January 2005, for an average of almost five warrants per month. That represented a sharp increase from the last reported tally from October 2001 to April 2003, when 47 warrants were issued, for an average of fewer than three per month." ...

Bills pending in Congress that would grant broad immunity to gun dealers should not pass

"Gun violence remains a national tragedy. Look no further than the recent Columbine-style shootings in Red Lake, Minn. The FBI reports gun deaths in the US are rising - 14 percent between 1999 and 2003. Eight children a day are killed in this country by guns, according to the Centers for Disease Control." KABA Note: This is a lie. This statistic includes adults over 18 years of age.

"Yet even with such startling figures, and just six months after Congress shamefully allowed the assault weapons ban to expire, the National Rifle Association (NRA) remains committed to supporting bills now pending in the House and Senate that would grant broad immunity from liability in civil lawsuits to gun manufacturers and dealers. ..." -- KABA Note: Another attempt to mislead. What these gun banners call "assault" weapons are responsible for less than 2 percent of all crimes committed with firearms.

"Not all gun dealers, of course, are reckless, but the ATF reports over half of all guns used in crimes are purchased from just 1 percent of gun dealers. Clearly, they don't deserve the protection these bills would provide."

"The M-107 program is managed at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., by the Project Manager Soldier Weapons with engineering support provided by Picatinnys Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center."

"The term 'full materiel release' signifies that the Army has rigorously tested and evaluated the item and determined that it is completely safe, operationally suitable and logistically supportable for use by Soldiers, officials said."

OH: Ohio handgun law has had little effect

"When Ohio's law allowing people to carry a concealed handgun took effect last April, it was the culmination of years of legal wrangling."

"Since then, crime hasn't dropped noticeably -- as touted in most pro-concealed carry arguments. Nor has there been an upturn in vigilante justice or accidents involving permit holders -- arguments pushed by anti-gun advocates."

"Although Ohio crime statistics aren't available for the first year of licensed concealed carry, the hoopla surrounding the law's rollout was much ado about nothing, said Robert Cornwell, executive director of the Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association."

Caseless Rifle Ammo Gets Another Look

"Once more, the U.S. Army is looking at using caseless ammo, or ammo using plastic cartridges. Such a move would reduce ammo weight by about 20 percent. This makes a big difference to combat troops. Most of a nine man squads fire power come from its two 5.56mm machine-guns (M-249 SAW, or Squad Automatic Weapon). The 17.5 pound SAW normally uses a seven pound box magazine holding 200 rounds of ammo. The gunner usually carries three of these magazines into battle. Reducing ammo weight by 20 percent would save four pounds. This makes a difference, when you consider that the total weight a grunt is carrying comes to over 70 pounds (clothing, body armor, first aid kit, and lots of useful, or just mandatory, stuff.)"

"Recent headlines have brought the usual demands from gun control extremists for more laws and more restrictions on the private ownership of firearms. What the gun banners, and their media cheerleaders, have rather carefully ignored is that all of these brutal acts occurred in so-called 'gun-free' zones."

"After Columbine, state legislatures passed a flurry of gun free school zone laws that have hardly been a panacea to campus violence. When I went to high school in Tacoma, Washington, we had a rifle team, and kids brought their guns to school all the time. Nobody suffered so much as a scratch."

"Gun manufacturers dont want to be sued by third parties when someone illegally uses their products."

"Gun control advocates, on the other hand, oppose legislation that would prevent civil liability actions against the gun industry."

"Thats how the political battle lines are drawn as, once again, bills are pending in both the U.S. House and Senate that would limit legal action against gun companies, including Sigarms in Exeter and Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. in Newport."

"suburban drug addicts trade assault-style weapons and handguns to city drug dealers for heroin." ...

"The firearms lobby is too wealthy and powerful to be held accountable for crimes committed with its products. This means no politician hoping to be re-elected -- and that's every politician -- is crazy enough to take them on."

"In the meantime, guns in hand, our kids will continue to take on each other."

"The Montana legislature voted 88-12 to pass a resolution stating that the Patriot Act of 2001 violates citizens rights enshrined in the US and Montana constitutions. Although the resolution does not carry the authority of a law, it expresses the legislatures opinion and encourages law enforcement agencies to avoid investigations that violate constitutional rights. The resolution must survive a final vote before it officially passes. All 12 dissenting votes were by Republican representatives."

"A copy of an Italian-made, pump-action shotgun, which costs about $1,300 in the West, can be had for between 3,000 and 8,000 rupees, just $50 to $135. A replica of the famous AK-47 assault rifle goes for about $50, a tenth of what the real things costs but just as deadly."

"Illinois hunters and gun dealers are trying to shoot down a flurry of gun-control proposals they say rose from fear in the streets of Chicago, far from the downstate prairies and woods where guns are appreciated for sport."

"They see no room for compromise on Chicago-led efforts to ban assault weapons and .50-caliber rifles and ammunition, and they oppose proposals to require background checks for gun-show purchases and to limit gun buyers to one handgun per month."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836
