A Detroit police commissioner was taken into Detroit Police custody Friday morning after being involved in a single-car accident near Eastern Market.
Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens confirmed Sunday that Michael Reeves had been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following the crash. She said that when officers arrived at the scene of the accident at Russell and Canfield, they could smell the odor of intoxicants on Reeves. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Reeves was arrested at the hospital and currently is free on bond. |

Several armed men stormed into the home of the owner of a small business in South Jersey overnight Saturday.
The victim returned to his home on Gray Pebble Circle in Sicklerville, N.J., with his family around 11:30 p.m., according to authorities. Inside, another family member was being held at gunpoint by four or five men, police said.
The other members of the family were tied up, and the intruders ordered the father to surrender money and jewelry, Gloucester Township police said.

... Internal police documents reviewed by the Press and interviews with more than a dozen current and former active and retired police officers, detectives and senior Nassau police officials outline a program that could reward the group's [the Nassau County Police Department Foundation] members through preferential treatment that experts classify as questionable and unethical at best; pushing the limits of the very laws they were sworn to enforce at worst.

City officials decided to outsource the local police and recreation departments Saturday. To many, it felt like they were cutting out the city's heart as well. Police Sgt. Dennis Loubal broke down and wept at the microphone as he struggled to express how painful it would be for him to give up the Half Moon Bay police uniform he'd been wearing for the past 14 years. In spite of that, he said the city ought to contract with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office; it would save the city $509,000 and balance the budget. Loubal and the rest of the sworn officers would retain their jobs under the proposal submitted by the county, but it just won't be the same. "I've been serving this community, and I know I'll be rotated out," he said. |

Forget battering rams. Police are using a construction crane to rip apart a home in Sylmar to reach a suspected gunman. The building's destruction began late Monday morning when officers used the crane to smash a window and deploy tear gas and later "hot gas." In response, the suspect fired shots from the residence, prompting police to return fire. No officers were hit, and it was unclear if the suspect was wounded, said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman. The structural damage was escalated around noon as police used the crane to rip apart walls in the back of the home. Aerial video showed the majority of the second floor exposed, as well as at least one room on the first floor.

Authorities say two Mormon missionaries were robbed at gunpoint while they were discussing baptism with a man in Augusta.
Richmond County sheriffs deputies say the women told them they were talking about baptism with the man when he pulled out a gun and demanded their purses.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that the man fled with their purses, which included a Book of Mormon, a Bible, camera, cell phone, and drivers licenses.
Authorities say the women were preaching on behalf of the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when they were robbed in the 2300 block of Winston Way around 7:25 p.m. Saturday.

I'm not a law enforcement officer I just played one on TV. But you don't have to be Walker, Texas Ranger, to understand that there are very good reasons that law enforcement agents, as a rule, do not allow guns to "walk" into the hands of criminals. And to their credit, numerous rank and file BATF agents understood this truism as well, objecting to the "Fast and Furious" operation from the get-go. Their superiors told them, "You have to break some eggs to make an omelet," and then apparently threatened the agents with career discipline if they continued their objections. |

According to police, the driver, whose name police are not releasing, picked up Perez-Lopez in Dover for a ride to Hackettstown. Perez-Lopez told the driver he could only pay $19 of the $40 fare and asked the driver to stop at the Quick Chek so he could get more money. Perez-Lopez then fled on foot, police said.
The driver caught up to Perez-Lopez in the area of 150 Route 182 and used Mace in self-defense after Perez-Lopez "came after the driver in a fighting manner," police said. |

There is no statutory restriction on the type of ammo that you can carry in your personal defense weapon. Nor is there any prohibition on sighting devices. There may be some potential concerns about jury perception if you ever have to use your gun in self-defense and find yourself facing charges. (This is much less likely to occur at this point in history than prior to the enactment of Public Act 311 of 2006 [MCL 780.951] which created presumptions that deadly force is appropriate in certain situations and also created qualified immunity to those who use force in legitimate self defense.) |

This makes the Palm Pistol suitable for seniors or others who may have limited manual strength of dexterity. With dual independently operable grip safeties, chances of accidental discharge are negligible and its ergonomic design is suited for both left and right handed users. The pistol features a loaded chamber indicator and cocked striker indicator to ensure the user is aware of whether the weapon is ready for use. |

Both Supreme Court decisions vaguely acknowledged that states may prohibit guns in places such as schools or government buildings and may take reasonable measures to keep weapons out of the hands of "felons and the mentally ill." But the court did not specifically mention misdemeanants or drug abusers.
Corrigan, in his opinion, ruled that Tomas' decades-old misdemeanor drug conviction does not negate his right to own guns for the purpose of self-defense and that the state has no compelling reason to strip him of that right. |

The "Guns Save Lives" message came to Capitol Hill late last month, noted John Snyder, named the senior rights activist in Washington by Shotgun News.
A billboard truck carrying the message toured Washington, D.C. last week. Sponsored by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), the billboard proclaimed Americans use firearms 2,191 every day for legitimate defensive purposes.

In Florida, NRA supporters seek to impose a fine of $5 million on any doctor who asks patients if they own guns. In South Dakota, NRA supporters want to require every adult citizen to purchase a gun. Georgia is about to allow guns in bars, churches and political events; Arizona allows anyone to carry a concealed weapon without a permit; and Utah has named an official state firearm, soon to be followed by Texas.
NRA supporters in nine states seek to legalize guns on school campuses. In Montana, Radio Shack is giving away a gun with every purchase of Dish Network, and in Missouri a car dealer is offering a free AK-47 with the purchase of a new vehicle. |

As the National Rifle Association points out, Traver misled the public in a fear-mongering appearance on a Chicago NBC affiliate TV news show. In the interview, he hyped "the growing frequency of gang members and drug dealers using heavy caliber military-type weapons" and described them as if they were machine guns: "Pull the trigger and you can mow people down." Traver and his agents "provided the reporter with a fully automatic AK-47, with which she was unable to hit the target," the NRA reported. "He then said that stray bullets are 'one of the main problems with having stuff like this available to the gangs.'"
Except for the fact ... that fully automatic firearms are not available for sale through normal retail outlets. |

"We cannot undo that horrific tragedy, but we can fight to ensure it will never happen again," Ryan said. "This is important, common-sense legislation that is needed to protect law enforcement and public safety."
The bill would ban both the production and sale of the large-capacity devices in the U.S., as well as bringing one in from another country. Such magazines manufactured after 1994 are already banned in New York but are readily available in Pennsylvania and some other states.
High-capacity devices produced before the date a potential ban would go into place would still be legal under the bill. |

If there is one thing that the President does well, it is to read the polls. Many in his camp would prefer all-out and immediate confiscation of firearms, but the public, thankfully, knows better. One recent national poll found that an overwhelming 75 percent of voters believes that gun laws in the United States are either adequate or too harsh for law-abiding Americans. Accordingly, even those politicians who believe that the right to arms is outmoded tread carefully lest the electorate turn on them. |

Imagine your child or grandchild is at college, sitting in a class, when gunshots ring out down the hall. Pandemonium breaks loose. People duck for cover, teachers lock or barricade the classroom doors, and everyone punches 911 on their cell phones, jamming the 911 call center. Then, as the sound of shooting gets closer, they wait.
It was scenarios such as this - think Virginia Tech - that prompted the 82nd Texas Legislature to consider HB 750, to allow certain citizens to carry handguns on college campuses. If the bill passes into law, anyone holding a concealed-carry license will be permitted to carry a handgun on any state-supported college campus in Texas. Because the bill already has about 70 sponsors, its enactment is likely. |

The number of officers killed by gunfire has spiked 33 percent to 24 as of April 2, 2011, up from the 18 reported on April 2, 2010.
Dr. Bradley Smith, a WSU criminal justice professor whose research specializes in police, warned that it might be premature to jump to conclusions.
I dont know theres an upward trend yet. Youre just talking about the first few months, he said. You need more time to see if its really a trend. |

After all, how else can anyone with a straight face condemn citizens from seeking to protect themselves when facing an armed and potentially dangerous criminal? I suppose in Mr. Footes ideal world, criminals may be friendly, unarmed people who never wish to do any harm, but in the world that the rest of us live in, this couldnt be further from the truth.
In England earlier this year, police officials were forced to warn residents not to install wire mesh in their windows because doing so could injure burglars who frequently smash in unprotected windows in order to gain access to homes and storage units. |
